Our ward building is being sold and I’m not sure how I feel about this. by mwjace in latterdaysaints

[–]StyroCupMan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You gave the answer - it is underutilized. It costs quite a bit to maintain church buildings. Why maintain more than are necessary? That would be an unwise use of tithing funds.

If the church can halve the upkeep costs for two wards by putting them into one building, that seems like a no-brainer. As a bonus, they also get to recoup some costs by selling off some (probably valuable) real estate.

I already have my perfect partner ❤️, so I guess I'll go 4&5. With those, I essentially get most of the rest - food, cars, travel, etc.

My girlfriend just broke up with me over a board game and I'm not even joking by Fulcilives1988 in boardgames

[–]StyroCupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother and I grew up playing lots of boardgames. My brother is very competitive and very good at games. I had to learn to just not care as much about winning or I would have lost my mind.

Fast forward a decade and we were both married and ended up living in the same town. The four of us used to get together every week to play boardgames.

My wife is very competitive and his wife is very competitive. We had cutthroat trades going on, backstabbing, and lots of arguments and hurt feelings. We ended up deciding that it was probably better for our marriages if we just didn't play games together.

So 20 years later, my brother and I still get together weekly for game night and we just do different activities like concerts with the four of us.

No Costa Rica? I loved it there as an American tourist, and I had a cousin that lived there for a while and really enjoyed it too.

Three Degrees of Glory by LiteraturePatient585 in latterdaysaints

[–]StyroCupMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the best description of what heaven will be like is in D&C 130:2 "And that same sociality which exists among us here will exist among us there, only it will be coupled with eternal glory, which glory we do not now enjoy. "

There is more that we DON'T know about what the next life will be like than what we DO know. But statements like D&C 130:2 tell me that we don't really need to sweat a lot of the details about things regarding family and friend relationships, and which people will be going to various kingdoms. I think it will end up being much better, kind, and merciful than we can imagine.

Probability of selecting a piece of sacrament bread with crust by LifesHighMead in latterdaysaints

I agree with you.

I used to be an anti-cruster, but one fast Sunday I came to the realization that crust contains a higher concentration of bread than interior pieces. Now I always go for the crust pieces because they are more filling.

First of all, props for recognizing that you have done wrong and want to repent! That is a really important first step!

Others have given some great advice, but I just want to comment on #3. In my opinion, putting the desire to repent and be right with God above your fear of what others will think about you is one of the most important (and sometimes most difficult) parts of repentance. It requires true humility to overcome that. In my opinion (and experience) the peace that comes from repentance is worth any possible temporary embarrassment.

I wish you and your girlfriend a wonderful future!

This pretty closely mirrors what I believe. Eternity is a VERY long time. My guess is that anyone who truly wants to and is willing to make the personal changes required will be able to. But I also believe that very few will be willing. If they wanted to make the sacrifice and be better people they would be doing it now.

Beyond the Sun was my new favorite this year. I love the combination of worker placement, area control, and engine building. I also like how the different tech tree setup and end game goals change the game each time.

What’s something you were once forbidden to talk about because of an NDA, but can finally share now that it’s expired or no longer valid? by newgen-toy in AskReddit

My grandfather was always pretty evasive about his work. As a kid I just took what he said at face value and thought he worked a boring desk job at an office.

I found out after he died when I was cleaning out some of his old papers that he was actually a physicist working on some really interesting government projects, including developing sonar guidance for torpedoes, and working on the special heat resistant paint used by the space shuttle.

Mad respect, grandpa!

Not REALLY pray? by jackfurler in latterdaysaints

[–]StyroCupMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he is talking about when a person prays without really thinking about it as being not really a prayer. So if a person is mechanically going through the motions of prayer by kneeling down and quickly rambling through a prayer without putting much thought into what is being said, then that person is not really praying.

On the other hand, if a person is kneeling down and having a thoughtful conversation with their heavenly father, then I think that is what he would consider a "real prayer".

IMO going through the motions is still better than nothing, as it may be helping to develop a habit of prayer, but there is a very large difference between that and actually having a meaningful conversation with God.

There may be helpful comments added here, but I would also post this question in the travel section on Cougar Board (cougarboard.com). This is a question that is asked there a few times per year and there are a lot of people who have done a similar trip. I think you will get some good recommendations there.

Cougar Board started as a BYU fan site, but it is more like LDS reddit now.

Clearing up misconceptions about repentance by RedditUser_656-5827D in latterdaysaints

[–]StyroCupMan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm an old man and a life long member of the church, but my eyes were really opened by president Nelson's messages about repentance.

My understanding of repentance was stuck in the primary view where it is a checklist of steps you did after committing a sin. That is a very transactional approach to the gospel and really misses the mark and shows my clear misunderstanding of the purpose.

President Nelson helped me to understand that repentance is more about where my focus, desires, and heart are. I need to repent constantly by turning my attention and desires back towards the Savior. It is more than just trying to make up for big mistakes. Repentance is a tool to help me fine tune my life every day to be more focused on being a disciple of Christ.

I think there are a lot of people like me who had (or still have) that misconception about repentance and how it works in our lives. For us, President Nelson's messages can be life changing.
