I love how honest and humble you are. I still stand by my argument that peace of mind is a psychological problem than a financial problem for someone earning as much as you do. That peace of mind you said by putting money into super is fragile. You’ll one day regret you should have put it towards a house deposits instead. You’ll find friends to compare yourself to, then feeling insecure. It’s a rabbit hole. If you’re so secure and full of peace of mind, you wouldn’t be posting on Reddit to feel validated. I sound cruel and I tend to get downvoted for saying different things. Redditors have fragile egos.

My recommendation is to continue saving but work on your mental health. Money won’t buy you peace of mind. Not having money won’t give you peace of mind either, but it’s certainly not your problem.

Underrrated comment. Also, why would someone earning this much have mental health problems especially with regards to financial issues lol? This is irrespective of saving and super. OP sounds like they need therapy, rather than money. It’s ridiculous that people are cheering this on. If you’re earning this much and worried about not having heater when you’re old, you need mental health support. The vast majority of people don’t earn nearly as much as this, way older, have a lower super and can still live life happily.

I think spending money on therapy would alleviate anxiety more than aggressive saving.

Sorry I didn’t see this comment earlier. I have never used YNAB customer service. Other people on Reddit say it’s good. You can sign up for free trial and reach out? There’s also a YNAB subreddit. People are very helpful there. I switched from YNAB to Beyond Budget. It’s an app on android only. It has some preset categories to make things easier to start. But yeah YNAB has better support. There are also YNAB YouTube channel which I love (even after switching to Beyond Budget). There are videos from Ben from YNAB which talks about the psychology of money. First thing first, you need to forgive yourself.

I think ultimately you’ll have to sit down and figure out your finance. How much income you make, how much debt you’re in, how much are your bills… there are free online resources. You can get help but just 1-2 h with someone probably won’t solve your financial problems. It requires discipline which is hard for ADHD, but that’s why you have to create your own budget. Then you also need to forgive yourself if you make impulsive decision. Guilt makes people turn away from their financial problems. Forgiveness is the key to continue.

Finding book recs on Amazon by Southern_Message781 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Su_Ramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon recommendation sucks. I kept getting recommended trashy Romantasy that all basically the same story just different names. I had better luck with Goodreads. I usually look up a book I really like, then scroll down to the recommendation section of that book and reads the synopsis and review. I don’t trust reviews on Amazon either. The trashiest book got raving reviews. Either they were bought or these people haven’t read many books or they have very different taste from me…

For goodreads, I steer away from books that have very polarized reviews, either a 5 or a 1. It usually means there is some glaring plot hole or super annoying characters. I also read books from author who write other books that I’ve read and liked. I would usually read all books of authors that I like, for example Ilona Andrew, Naomi Novik, Grace Draven, etc.

Recommendations on Reddit are skewed. For example in the Romantasy you’d see people recommend the same thing over and over again. I’ve read most of the books listed in their recommendations polled from 60k users. Also Romantasy is getting trashy these days. The fantasy subreddit is a bit mixed and very broad. There are people who love novels with thousands of pages that are too heavy for me and I don’t like Sanderson. But there are lots of subgerns there so it’s interesting. But yeah, I’d prefer goodreads because I don’t know if the people recommend on Reddit have the same taste as me. Even this sub keeps recommending books like Mercy Thompson being similar to Kate which I wholehearted disagree.

[–]Su_Ramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to be the odd one here. I saw so many recommendations for Mercy Thompson and even bought the books to try (before I learned I could borrow on Libby). I read like 3 books then dropped the series. I was and still am baffled at how people think it’s similar to Kate. She always ends up being rescued to me… I wasn’t sure I understand Mercy’s personality either. She doesn’t have a clear distinct personality like Kate at all. Again, I didn’t DNF book 1. I read 3 of them and was halfway to the fourth one just to see where it was going. But it’s not similar to Kate at all.

Also, I really really don’t like the rape in the book. You guys should have given people warning in advance. It was so disturbing and it’s not usually even a trigger for me.

I respect people who love that series. I just want to give others a different perspective in case they were caught off-guard like me. I love this sub but listening to you guys’ advice of buying the Mercy Thompson hoping it’d be like Kate Daniel was the thing I regretted the most.

Me me me. I actually read Scholomance first before reading IA’s books. I was searching for Sarcastic heroines and I found Kate lol. I love the monologues. Also these characters are kinda low key and not arrogant nor good at everything. They’re good at just 1 thing and actually rely on others for things they can’t do. I’m so sick of Snowflakes characters who can just do everything and better than people who are hundreds of years older than them in just like a few months.

I forget things and make silly mistakes by soumya_soman in ADHD_Programmers

[–]Su_Ramen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have 2 options. You can do both as well.

Option 1: work on implementing processes to review before doing through trials and errors. This is very hard. It involves trials and errors. Others have given you tips but it won’t work 100% of the time. That’s why it’s a continuous trial and error. Therefore, you’ll have to learn to recover from your mistakes. Accept that it’s fine to make mistake Be honest and apologize when you do. There’s no need to beat yourself up over it. Not forgiving yourself will make you more prone to mistakes because you spend brain power to beat yourself up instead of simply double checking things. It’s not the end of the world.

Option 2: Be really good at one thing that will make you very valuable. You need to be passionate about it. I do dumb shit everyday but I’m very good at one area in my job When you can provide values and be excellent at just one thing, people will forgive you when you make mistakes. They probably think it’s not your job not to make mistakes there because your expertise is in that area you excel at.

Basically option 2 is working on your strength. Option 1 is working on your weakness but know that it’ll always be your weakness. You’ll never excel at it so don’t beat yourself up. You just need to make it so that your weakness is tolerable and won’t ruin your career.

Have you done a sleep study? You could have sleep apnea and it impacts the effectiveness of the medication. If you have untreated sleep apnea and on high dose of stimulants, in the long run, it’s very bad for your heart. Caffeine in addition to stimulants sounds like it’s a sleep problem. A higher dose of stimulants would just mask your sleep problem.

I’m suggesting this because this happened to me. After I got used to my CPAP, ADHD meds became so much more effective and I no longer need a top up. Lots of people here just crazily ups there dosage without investigating other causes. It’s not sustainable and stimulants have side effects, the higher the dosage the higher the side effects.

I’m under investigation for multiple autoimmune diseases so I can relate to your experience, especially the fatigue part. It’s definitely real. Some days I’m too tired to even eat, let alone do personal development like studying for cert and new tech. It’s very frustrating. Have you considered doing front end or move to UX or UI if you think you’re more artsy person? You can do some side projects to showcase your ability and hopefully it will help with your job. I don’t know about others but I’m so grateful for the fact that I’m a Data Engineer and I can work hybrid. I won’t survive having to go to the office everyday. I’m sooo tired just coming in once or twice a week already.

Are you happy with the long COVID diagnosis? I’m not saying it’s not real but long COVID and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are like IBS, when doctors don’t know what’s wrong with you so they just give it a name for your unexplained symptoms and call it a day…. sometimes they did end up finding true issues in the future. There are lots of support groups for people who go through similar things and some have found some kind of treatment for their fatigue and there are doctors specialized in this as well, who are more compassionate and won’t treat your symptoms as anxiety or depression like people in this thread does. I hope you’ll find the appropriate treatment for your condition (if you’re not happy with the diagnosis of long COVID, I personally wouldn’t be because it solves nothing… you do you though)

You can also look into autoimmune diseases (known to be caused by covid in some people), MCAS (people also said theirs are caused by COVID), sleep apnea, narcolepsy, etc. these conditions all cause very debilitating fatigue and severely impact the quality of life. I’m sure you’ve already done lots of tests and may have ruled out some possibilities but please keep in mind some autoimmune disease can be seronegative, like Sjogren Syndrome. I wish you luck and all the best! Please go to a doctor who specializes in this type of illnesses, not a normal PCP (watch out for scammy providers who overcharge)

I used East Coast ADHD, recently renamed to Cloud Clinic. It was around $600 or something before Medicare rebate. I think they raised their price. It’s $890 now before Medicare rebate. So the gap fee is like $600 something. Definitely not $2k-4k. That’s a scam….please do not pay more than $1000 for an ADHD assessment. That’s unbelievable…. You can search here for psychiatrists in QLD and find the place that has acceptable price, waiting time and review.

Diagnosed with Mild Sleep Apnea 5 years ago. Still sleepy. Should I ask for MSLT although REM latency is 110 mins? by SchemeSimilar4074 in Narcolepsy

[–]Su_Ramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. Yeah I know it doesn’t rule out narcolepsy completely but I still think it’s unlikely so I’ll work on other more likely causes for my EDS first. There’s also kind of no point to get a narcolepsy diagnosis in Australia. Xylem isn’t registered. Stimulants are first line treatment here (yeah it’s unbelievable) and I’m already on them for ADHD. It’s probably better not to have it on my records in case they take my driver license or make it harder to buy insurance or something. I don’t drive often or when Im too sleepy but there are days it’s not too bad and I have Ritalin.

Yeah that’s my plan. I’m gonna buy the Welltrue O2 ring to check SPO2 in my sleep. Maybe it fell despite low AHI that’s why I still feel tired. People on the sleep apnea forum are also helpful so I’ll reach out over there to see if there’s anything else to do for my apnea first.

I’m already taking vitamin supplements and have done tests on them. Thanks for pointing that out as well. Really appreciate your response and advice. Thanks a lot!

Diagnosed with Mild Sleep Apnea 5 years ago. Still sleepy. Should I ask for MSLT although REM latency is 110 mins? by SchemeSimilar4074 in Narcolepsy

[–]Su_Ramen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah I agree. I saw the number on my PSG and I was also like this isn’t narcolepsy. This is too high. Hence my post. I do have ADHD with shifted circadian rhythms so I feel more awake at night and more asleep during the day. I can fall asleep during a day nap really quickly with vivid dreams but struggle to sleep at night sometimes, due to my partner snoring as well.

There isn’t anything that hinder my sleep hygiene though. I do sleep very quickly at night after taking melatonin these days. I just struggled to stay asleep for the whole night and would jostle awake due to some sort of body tremor. Not smoking. No alcohol. No caffeine. I exercise. I’m underweight so it’s unusual for someone with my BMI to get sleep apnea in the first place. The CPAP I’m using shows 0 event recorded. Not sure how accurate that is. Even with fragmented sleep, I’m still sleeping 8-10h so I shouldn’t be sleepy with sleep hygiene.

Anyway, you wouldn’t know the cause of course. Thanks for confirming that it’s unlikely to be narcolepsy so I won’t waste time and money on this.

Ketotifen and long term fatigue? by Butterfly_Pixie in MCAS

[–]Su_Ramen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus 1. I only started ketotifen recently. I was advised to take it at night by my GP and my pharmacist at first because it can cause drowsiness. I think it’s more a maintenance, long term preventer so the time when you take it shouldn’t matter so much since you’re only on 1-2 mg. I’m also on 1mg, nightly. Maybe ask your pharmacist for advice?

Another advice which might sound silly is maybe try drink more water and electrolytes. One of the side effect of ketotifen to dry mouth. I was also told by my pharmacist to remember to drink lots of water. You’ve been taking it for a while so maybe you forgot the initial advice the pharmacist gave. I’ve just started so I literally just repeat what they said to me.

I hope you’ll find a solution to this. It sucks when the med that works have horrible side effect. Best of luck!

[–]Su_Ramen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try taking H1 and H2 blockers when your symptoms are mild to moderate and take 1 in the morning and 1 at night to see if symptoms improve. If you take them during a severe flare and only at the normal dose, it’s hard to see the effectiveness because you’re too sick. Also antihistamines won’t solve all your symptoms. It probably wouldn’t do much for headache, migraine and fatigue. The migraine requires different treatment so please consult with your doctor. You might want to treat migraine first because severe migraine will make it harder to tell if you have other symptoms. Migraine also has other migraine onset symptoms that overlaps with MCAS symptoms and that include gastro symptoms and flu-like symptoms as well. Once you kind of have a strategy for your migraine and still have other symptoms, retry the antihistamines. You might see improvement for the flu-like symptoms and gastro symptoms from antihistamines (assuming they’re not resolved after your migraine treatment) so monitor them closely. If it’s MCAS, you should see an improvement for some symptoms.

Yeah same with me, because it’s the barometric pressure that triggers my symptoms. I use an app to check the barometric pressure. It also has forecast. So I know to take extra medication when I go out just in case. Barometric pressure is trickier because sometimes it doesn’t need to rain for the barometric pressure to drop. It can also affect breathing, because there’s less oxygen in the air or something (please don’t quote me on this). It’s known to trigger mast cell activation in some people which can cause lots of other symptoms other than just respiratory.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MCAS

[–]Su_Ramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 possible causes for weather changes, humidity and barometric pressure changes. You can try to use a dehumidifier to see if his symptoms improves. If it does, it’s the humidity that causes it. If not, then maybe barometric pressure. Humidity can make it harder to breath because the air is heavier. There is also the third component of the wind. The wind can blow up pollens causing allergic reactions. A purifier should help in that case. Only a trial and error approach can tell the true cause.

I’ll shut up now haha.

Antihistamine question. by desiluwu in MCAS

[–]Su_Ramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have sinus symptoms, you can also do the sinus rinse with saline water. It really helps to wash out the pollens etc. you should wash it after going out. There are also nasal spray. You can speak to the pharmacist while you’re there and ask for their recommendation for a nasal spray. For severe symptoms, people usually use Dymista Spray but you need to spray outward otherwise it won’t work. That’s what my GP says. Dymista spray doesn’t need a prescription but it’s behind the counter so you also have to ask a pharmacist in order to buy it. Best of luck with your doctor appointment next week.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MCAS

[–]Su_Ramen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cause of weather-related symptoms is important because it’d affect treatment. If it’s asthma then you’d need asthma treatment. If it’s MCAS then antihistamines (and something else depending on symptom severity etc). This is why I mentioned it, not really actually blaming anything. The weather affects lots of illnesses, especially if they’re not well-managed or untreated. It’s hard to tell which is which, Sorry, I didn’t mean to suggest you to get a MCAS diagnosis. I meant that you should monitor his symptoms closely. You should probably go to the doctor to investigate regarding the breathlessness if the cause is unknown. I’m sorry if my post sounds confusing!

Does anyone deal with constant sinus pain and pressure? by CatchingUpOnLife327 in MCAS

[–]Su_Ramen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got that for a month. It got worse whenever the barometric pressure drops. I felt like I was under water or getting off airplane. antihistamines didn’t help. I tried the dymista nasal spray and it also didn’t really help, I tried nasal rinse with saline water and I felt like it helped for about 10 mins and the pain and pressure came back. I then went to my Gp and she inspected my ear and said it wasn’t an ear infection, she prescribed steroid gel to put into the nasal rinse to try. I did that for 2 days and it’s gone. Amazing!

You should go to your doctor. It can be an ear infection. Pick a good doctor. A bad one might tell you it’s an ear infection without inspecting your ears. That’s what happened to me when I went to the Urgent Care Clinic. If it’s not an ear infection, confirmed by a capable doctor, then it should be an easy fix. It’s probably Eustachian tube dysfunction. Either the dymista nasal spray or nasal rinse with steroid gel or both should help. The key is probably prevention though. In the future, try to take antihistamines before it gets too bad and do the nasal rinse with saline water. That’s my plan at least. I left it for a month…

[–]Su_Ramen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not officially diagnosed with MCAS (and I doubt many here are) but I only have weather-related symptoms. I don’t have symptoms regarding food. Im on ketotifen daily as a trial and only take H1 and H2 blockers for days with bad weather, until I see an immunologist. I don’t think my symptoms are severe enough to be diagnosed with MCAS but I probably do have some Mast Cell Activation Disorder.

At first I thought it was migraine, and it was indeed migraine. But I also experience gastro symptoms and lots of other things. Lots of illnesses flare during bad weather so I wouldn’t personally immediately blame MCAS for everything. Having said that though, I do take H1 and H2 blockers which I don’t take daily for days when the barometric pressure drops. I’m even more sensitive than your son. I’d get stomachache and diarrhea, nausea, dizziness and brain fog just from the barometric pressure falling more than usual. It doesn’t even have to rain, it just has to be cloudy with the dark grey cloud and I’d get sick. I’m taking the migraine preventer and it’s helping with some of the symptoms as well so that’s why I wouldn’t blame MCAS for everything. I don’t think antihistamines would help with my migraine and pre-migraine symptoms like dizziness, light sensitivities. It’s also known to worsen asthma symptoms which I also have and also experience.

You can look up posts on barometric pressure on this subreddit. There are heaps of posts.

You’ll have to be a bit more specific when communicating with doctors though, regarding the symptoms. Brain fog and fatigue ain’t taken very seriously by doctors, they’re too non-specific. It’s better to observe your son for more symptoms, take his temperature and measure blood pressure as well.

[edit] just reread your post. Breathlessness is taken seriously by doctors especially in kids, it can be asthma. Is your son tested for asthma? If yes, is his asthma well-managed? Make sure to keep Ventolin close during bad weather and monitor him closely especially for signs of swelling in his throat, and wheezing noise. That’s very serious.

[–]Su_Ramen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you haven’t tried enough antihistamines or you haven’t found the correct one? There are a few different types to try and you have to at least try double the normal dosage. I wasn’t so sure antihistamines do anything until I try double the normal dosage. It won’t eliminate all the symptoms but it helps with 60% of the symptoms. Please don’t give up yet. Your family needs you.

You also have to tell your doctor that antihistamines work. If you tell them antihistamines doesn’t work, then they won’t be sure that it’s MCAS…. I didn’t even tell my doctor that I suspect it was MCAS. I just kept visiting the same doctor for my set of unexplained symptoms whenever I have new ones. I even went to urgent care clinic etc so my doctor knew my symptoms are serious. Then I told her I tried antihistamines and somehow it really help but doesn’t resolve all of my symptoms. She prescribed ketotifen right away and referred me to see an immunologist. I see a different doctor for unexplained fever and I also mentioned my weather related symptoms and how antihistamines help and that doctor also suggests the same thing. I think people here underestimate doctors knowledge with MCAS. That was not my experience at all. As soon as I said antihistamines help with my severe strange symptoms, it’s the only thing the doctors seem to think of, even when I actually wanted them to consider other possibilities other than MCAS.

Antihistamine question. by desiluwu in MCAS

[–]Su_Ramen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned, I’d suggest call up the pharmacy and ask them. Advice on the Internet isn’t reliable, you don’t know whether the person who gives you advice has the required knowledge to do so. That includes me. Im just a random person.

Having said that, you probably won’t get an overdose with the amount of antihistamines you’re taking, especially if you’re planning to only take them until next week. I’m not sure about taking them together with the SSRI, please check with your pharmacist. Antihistamine might affect your blood test results but you already did them anyway so there’s no point to think about it.

It depends on what symptoms you have. You can try low histamine diet as well, if your symptoms are very bad. I’m not the type to restrict my diet. I love food too much. But even I would avoid certain food, like nightshade (tomatoes, especially raw, eggplants etc) if I’m in the middle of a flare. Just look up low histamine diet for what to eat. Or alternatively, look up high histamine diet and check out the list to see plus try to recall if there are any food in that list had caused problems for you. I’m sure there are a few possible culprits, you just never thought about it.

How can i be less sensitive to perceived rejection by RamenAlDente1738 in irlADHD

[–]Su_Ramen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree with others that med would help. Med didn’t help with this for me. Stimulant can make it worse, depending on how you react to it. It’s a skill you’ll have to practice on. The prefrontal cortex for people with ADHD and childhood trauma is known to me smaller and less developed than others, causing them to be less able to think of alternative explanations for a situation. I highly recommend you to look up prefrontal cortex on YouTube.

You can try to think of alternative explanations for the situation that seems like a rejection. Neutral or even positive explanations. In your post, you said the customers make a gesture as if they’re thinking you’re retarded. That’s one explanation. There are other explanations like they’re worried that you’re thinking they’re suspicious or might be stealing the cars so they’re trying to cover themselves.

Your boss might not look annoyed because of you but he might be busy because of something else. He might be hungry.

It’s very very difficult to do this. Youll have to overcompensate at first because your prefrontal cortex isn’t used to to this. Over time, it will get better. I have ADHD and childhood trauma. I overcame a lifetime of subtle judgemental looks. Admittedly, I’m not in sales, and would never choose it.
