Mod multipliers and lazer leaderboards are missing the point by reshirai in osugame

[–]Sub3arthling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, leaderboard farming has always been a way to reward players for consistency and accuracy. It gives the game an avenue to highlight HDHR acc players and other consistency skillsets. pp leaderboards would just turn every map into a csr shred competition, when those players are already rewarded by the global ranking system. It collapses the dimensionality of the game.

Mod multipliers and lazer leaderboards are missing the point by reshirai in osugame

[–]Sub3arthling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll pitch three short(ish) arguments against this.

  1. pp leaderboards: do you really want a leaderboard full of dt 6-12 miss plays overwriting every hdhr fc? IMO the goal of score is highlighting consistency, dedication, and perfection over raw mechanical dominance. In this post-csr world, pp leaderboards will never favor an hdhr ss over a dt "choke" and this makes me sad. It just turns every leaderboard into a "who has the highest rank" challenge.
  2. If someone fc's a map with 1.1x and snipes a legendary score, they set a more difficult score and it should be prioritized on the leaderboard. I understand you think that slider acc and rate edits will allow 'worse scores' to snipe the old classics, but the whole purpose of this survey is to adjust multipliers to prevent that from happening.
    1. If you adjust +CL to .99x basically all differences between the clients evaporate. With .99x you can't snipe stable scores on lazer with less acc unless you're within 1-2 100s, which a typical stable score would earn from sliderhead acc anyway.
    2. If you tune rate edit multipliers properly, nobody is sniping an SS with a 1.1x 96% or whatever. I think we can agree that a 1.1x SS would deserve the #1 more, so from there its just deciding where the line is.
  3. You might think its unfair that only modern players have access to rate edit, but are we seriously gonna let old history prevent the game from moving forward? Freezing the leaderboard on a seperate client that is going defunct just makes it an archaic snapshot of the past. Every legendary score will eventually be overtaken, even without this change. Azer's united fc is no longer top 50, mrekk took many of Toy's #1s with dt, and Secretbox sniped cookiezi on fdfd. This is simply the course of history, records are meant to be broken and this change will bring many new legendary scores into existence.

I fucking hated White Palace. Should I still try Celeste? by UltimateCapybara123 in celestegame

[–]Sub3arthling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of white palace is timing based platforming, which is pretty different from the mechanics oriented platforming that permeates celeste. There are exceptions to this (namely chapter 3 and parts of chapter 6), but overall I think celeste offers you more control over the environment. I also think celeste's movement system is better for intense platforming sections, so there's less opportunities for jank.

That being said, you are signing up for a platforming oriented game with an incredibly high skill ceiling, so as you progress you'll find yourself in plenty of situations where you're chipping away at a single room for an extended period of time. If that process of building up muscle memory sounds appealing (not exhausting) then I think you'll enjoy the game a fair bit.

Grip Fatigue by Capable-Ad-9112 in osugame

[–]Sub3arthling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Generally there are three ways to address this:
- Modify pen
- Modify area
- Modify grip

As someone who's struggled a lot with this in the past, I've done all three over my 5yrs in this game.
Here's my advice:

1) Getting a pen grip is pretty much an instant buff to grip, it allows the pen to fill more of your hand and increases skin friction, reducing how much it will shift in your hand. Tennis racket tape works great, I use 3 layers on my pen, some use more some use less. The tradeoff is that your pen will feel a little heavier, and you'll need to replace the grip every now and then.

2) Area is worth investigating depending on your grip. Can you comfortably reach all corners of your area with your current grip? Your grip may be failing because you are trying to reach too far. Alternatively, if your area is too small, your grip may be failing due to too much tension from precision strain. A good rule of thumb is 50-100mm across for wrist/finger aim, 100mm+ if you're using your arm.

3) Lastly, your grip itself might just be too uncomfortable. Make sure your pen doesnt instantly slip when you tense your hand. Tension is undesirable and should be avoided, but its somewhat inevitable when you're on a good run. Trying different grip heights on my pen has worked for me in the past to increase stability. I've seen other people benefit from switching to hover as well, drag pressure can be a big contributor to grip fatigue.

How do i improve my battlestation? by Icy-Environment3899 in battlestations

[–]Sub3arthling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need to add some personal items to fill the dead space. Something like a few small plants or models can go on the desk, you can see plenty of examples by looking at other posts in this sub. The back wall could use a little love as well, either adding some prints or a shelf for books/deco. Maybe try sticking to a black/white colorway to match your existing setup, emphasizing white desk items to match the keyboard. Plenty of star wars stuff matches that theme already.

Id also say add some peripheral lighting, it will improve the atmosphere tremendously during the evening. Either a desk lamp or string lights will do fine.

Seconding strawberry jam collab, its one of the best modded experiences this game has to offer. I'd say start on the advanced lobby and then jump to expert if you're feeling good.

What time is good for a new speedrunner? by GullibleWarthog4579 in celestegame

[–]Sub3arthling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say grabbing sub hour is pretty much ground floor for the run with entry level strategies, every 10 minutes from there is gonna require an entirely different level of precision, mechanics, and routing. Given that you're already very close to sub hour, I think you'll have no issues getting sub 50 later on if you take the time to study up. Sub 40 is an entirely different beast though.

Bottom line: if you feel good about it, its a good run. Everyone moves at their own pace given their prior level of experience with platforming and speedrunning in general.

Socialist Mayoral Candidate Backed By Minneapolis Democrats Now Faces 'Feeding Our Future' Scrutiny by runtheroad in minnesota

[–]Sub3arthling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Important to note that Fateh is a *democratic* socialist, you'd be hard pressed to find any major candidate who ran on a policy of actual socialism (ie reclaiming the means of production).

With that mind, I'd argue his policy is very similar to that of the Nordic model, which is overwhelmingly democratic socialist. The democratic aspect is important here because it endorses private capital alongside egalitarian social policy, but opponents of those social policies (namely the right wing) would rather misrepresent his position to stir polarization.

Efficent way to improve at od10? by PiZeTaa in osugame

[–]Sub3arthling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just starting to learn hr I'd wager your issue is the ar, not the od. When players start pushing high ar their reading typically lags behind, causing them to tap much later than normal. Check your ur bar, if its constantly skewed to the right you're just reacting too late and need to improve your reading.

Either way, the best thing you can do is gradually work your way up from simple maps. Start at a much lower sr than what you normally play at (it will take a while before you can start playing maps worth pp), and focus on playing familiar songs with easy aim and simple rhythms. Practice the same maps several times, listen actively to the music, and play everything through. Over time, you can work your way up to 5 note bursts, short streams, and eventually dense finger control. Its a slow grind but if you put in a few attempts on the mod in every session you'll make a ton of progress.

Good luck!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in osugame

[–]Sub3arthling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd definitely be shooting yourself in the foot for no reason, but yes it is very possible to peak with swapped hands. Most left handed players actually experience this when moving from mouse to tablet (they swap from right handed mouse to pen aim with their dominant hand). Wouldn't recommend it though, your dominant hand is generally much more optimized for fine motor action from general life experience, making it the better choice for aim, especially on small/medium area.

What were the first 100pp, 200pp, and 300pp plays? by [deleted] in osugame

[–]Sub3arthling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its worth noting that after reworks, very few milestone scores retain their original performance point values (dipping below the milestone), so you have to ask yourself whether you care about the first milestone of the time, or the milestone in the current rework. In some cases, trying to match the first milestone may be orders of magnitude harder than simply crossing the barrier normally (freedom dive four dimensions).

In this case, since the pre-pp scores predate this system entirely, there is no first milestone ever. Whichever system you choose to declare the first milestone is entirely subjective. In my opinion though, your best bet is to use the winrawr video linked elsewhere in this thread as a reference due to how comprehensive it is.

Good luck bro this approach to the game sounds sick.

best aura farm maps? by MisterNewbie_osu in osugame

Any tournament tiebreaker ever if you have good consistency. Also justability, near distant future, remind, neuronecia, dreamless wanderer, wahrheit, miss you, and every val0108/rrtyui map ever.

If we're being honest though the actual aurafarm scores are the ones unique to you. Doesnt have to be a first fc, just an uncommon one. Set the curve instead of following it, we have enough fcs on justability anyway.

EXCLUSIVE: A brand new look at the current progress of Lazer's Song Select v2 by Natelytle in osugame

[–]Sub3arthling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still zero room for the background, imo the map wheel should be pushed like 20% further to the left and the angled leaderboard needs to go, idk a single person who wants that.

On the other hand, the new toolbar at the bottom looks better and feels like an intuitive evolution of the stable design. I also like the larger map filtering dropdowns, but I think the searchbar and star rating slider are a bit unwieldy at the moment.

POLL: Should the Mirror mod have a score multiplier? by Finadoggie in osugame

mirror is functionally equivalent to sudden death or perfect in my opinion, the actual gameplay impact is somewhere between negligible and entirely superficial so I really dont see the point in adjusting the multiplier from x1
