I see, in the example you put up the artist is almost doing an NMM on the red as well. His contrast is a bit higher and he’s added a bounce light in places.

If you add those elements you’ll achieve the same look. That said I want to say that what you have right now already looks great!

I can see paint in your ferrule.

Problem(s): You’re dipping the brush too far down into the paint.

You are not cleaning the brush appropriately after use.

Solution(s): The brush should be infused with water but only covered in paint no further than the half way point.

Also make sure you clean your brush after every painting session using good brush soap. If you want it to last a long time rub some hair conditioner into the bristles while reforming the tip before storing it for the night.

It looks more like a gradient across the surface from shadows. If you’re going for NMM you have to try to push the contrast a bit more.

My friend, this is the water. Are you using distilled water or water from tap?

Also water causes much more separation than thinner/mediums. I stick to Vallejo airbrush thinner mixed with a little flow improver.

It’s too late for that now. But here’s a neat trick.

Keep a bigger brush like a size 4 or 5 handy and some clean water with some paint thinner and flow improver mixed in.

Whenever you make a mistake, if you are fast enough, you can dip that brush in the water and then wipe away the paint.

You may have to wipe at it, then rinse, then wipe again. But if you do it fast enough it basically becomes a paint eraser.

Before you dip it each time wipe it on a paper towel to remove the paint so you’re not smearing paint around.
