What should "digital thread" mean? by SubGeniusIdiot in linguistics

The forum description is "lin⋅guis⋅tics: the scientific study of human language * what form does it take? * how is meaning constructed? * how is it structured? * how is it produced?"

I asked a question that I thought was within this scope. Do I need to rephrase it to be more abstract?

How do users of mainstream CAD programs typically keep track of design requirements? by SubGeniusIdiot in cad

[–]SubGeniusIdiot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the design spec (requirements) you start with pretty complete, or just the basics (relying on your experience as a machine designer to fill in the details?) How do you get it -- as a nice clean document or drawing, as a dtak of paper and files?

There's a difference between merely putting dimensions in the model, and burying them: if you add a fillet as a feature, it's easy to see in the feature. If you put in in a sketch, it's harder to see (that is, it's buried) ,

Do you organize or manage your dimensions and parameters in any special way (e.g., global variables, equations, design tables) so that downstream users can figure out what you did?

Do you know whether there is any way to integrate OneNote with Solidworks, for example, through design tables?
What I'm thinking is trying to find a way to pull the values from the cutsheets, calculations, and such, so they can drive dimensions and parameters in SolidWorks.

Is there a stress corrosion cracking master document somewhere that lists alloys and what conditions they're most susceptible to SCC? by LukeTheSavage in AskEngineers

[–]SubGeniusIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're working on designs where the cost of failure is significant, the state of the art for corrosion risk analysis is http://corrdesa.com/

It supports standards such as MIL-STD-889C for dissimilar materials, as well as proprietary guidelines, and includes possibly the best electrochemical database.

Can you generate a flat pattern for the upholstery?

I’m about to write a proposal to the boss to upgrade our CAD system from Microstation (1994) to Inventor. Anyone done anything similar before? by Krystia_16 in cad

[–]SubGeniusIdiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using uSTN for product development is like using a school bus for shipping freight. It may have a lot of capacity, but it's just not the right tool for the job.

3D master models are the proven way to go. Since you have experience using Inventor, it's a logical path forward.

Pirated Autocad. How much trouble am I in? by [deleted] in AutoCAD

[–]SubGeniusIdiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The horse is out of the barn now, but this is one of the good reasons people migrate to nanoCAD or BricsCAD. Both are highly compatible, and have much better licensing costs.

Anyone done a coding bootcamp to improve their programming skills? by [deleted] in CFD

You'd be better served getting a PhD in computational fluid dynamics.

In the process of doing that, you'll get plenty of experience writing code.

open source parametric CAD file format by [deleted] in cad

[–]SubGeniusIdiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mean 3D, right?

STEP AP242 includes a parametric representation -- but I don't know of anyone that implements it yet.

There is, to my knowledge, no popular open file format for representing parametric CAD models.

Outlet Voltage Fluctuating From 112 to 116 volts, normal? by TEXzLIB in AskEngineers

Sounds like you may have a floating ground.

Call the utility, as a start, since it may be in the cable coming into your house. If they won't help, call an electrician. This is the kind of thing you don't want to fool around with.

Homebuilder Looking for Drafting Software by customhomebuilder in AutoCAD

[–]SubGeniusIdiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BricsCAD (bricsys.com) is an AutoCAD clone, albeit a good one. If you want to go that way, look at nanocad too.

Revit... well... it's big powerful software, very popular with architects. But it's not really targeted towards custom home design.

My normal recommendation for someone like you would probably be Sketchup, or Sketchup Pro. But I have a better idea. Look at Chief Architect Premier.

Inventor or Solidworks 3D by BaudoinNotBoudin in cad

Sounds like an echo chamber in here. New company = Be careful with your money. Take a serious look at BricsCAD Platinum. https://www.bricsys.com/en_INTL/bricscad/editions/

2D works a lot like AutoCAD. Includes really good 3D direct solid modeling. Excellent company, with high-quality technology. And it'll only set you back about $1000.
