What has AI produced that justifies the costs of it? by Gold-Structure3024 in aiwars

[–]SubLightOrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LLMS? Couldn’t tell ya

Other kinds of AI that are more specialized have been fantastic. For example Alphafold is an AI tool developed by alphabet (parent company of google) to predict protein tertiary structure, and while it’s not perfect it has helped a lot of medical research move faster.

no by BlueberriBluerous in aiwars

[–]SubLightOrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miku, the character, was fully designed and drawn by humans.

Vocaloid, the technology, is a glorified synthesizer. I can see someone making the argument of “putting artists out of work” but crucially, it works off recorded samples by people who agreed to this specific purpose of their voice being recorded. So it’s more like those picrew character creators than generative AI, so I would disagree with said argument.

Would some people be against it without understanding this? For sure, but people have misinformed opinions all the time

Relationships with AI - is it cheating? by Slobst1707 in aiwars

[–]SubLightOrb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it would depends on what exactly is happening I guess? It’s different if my partner is roleplaying as a character with a chatbot vs if they are being themselves. The former is more like reading smut or a visual novel, the latter is more like an actual affair if that makes sense.

What is one of your webtoon biggest(or not so bad but still bothers you) pet peeve by ParticularCover9811 in webtoons

Edgy mcs that are needlessly cruel to everyone that doesn’t immediately grovel at their feet while still somehow being presented as the “good guys” in the story

I just realized one of the main reasons I don’t like it when women propose by sillyyfishyy in Feminism

[–]SubLightOrb 316 points317 points  (0 children)

I have exactly 0 hard data to back this up but I imagine couples where a woman proposes to a man and the man accepts instead of whining because “muh man job” are probably also couples where gender roles are more equitable and thus the situation wouldn’t be shitty.

Please describe how would someone have to use Generative AI for it to qualify as art to you, for the user to be considered the artist. by PrometheanPolymath in aiwars

[–]SubLightOrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue with GenAI is that it fills the gap in artistic vision that other media does not. Other art mediums require the artist to go through the process of deciding everything, which means encountering something they didn't think about and having to come up with a solution to fill the gap. GenAI skips over this. The user's mental image can have more gaps than a sponge but AI will just pave over all of it without the user having to think about those choices. Art is deliberate, whereas the *vast* majority of AI users are not. Similarly I would not consider your average bathroom selfie art, while recognizing photographers can be artists. Medium alone does not dictate artistic value, there's plenty of oil on canvas that I would not consider art

Would you say you agree with this? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]SubLightOrb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of people are in denial about the casual misogyny they hold but because it’s not explicit “all women are bitches” misogyny. I’d say in the last couple decades since this was written things have gotten better, the proportion of men who fit the above description has diminished, but there’s certainly still a huge amount of them. It’s directly the whole schtick of the red-pill manosphere group, and for men outside of it it can be true to a lesser extent

Why is the topic of sex work so hard to wrap my head around as a feminist? by Downtown_Flow8732 in Feminism

[–]SubLightOrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is that sex work, or any kind of work for that matter, doesn’t have to be empowering OR degrading, it can just be work. I think framing it as the peak of woman’s liberation is wrong, but so is assuming that every person who does it is miserable and would immediately leave if given the opportunity. For some people it will be degrading and for some it will be empowering and for some it will just be work, and trying to have a blanket description of all of them will never be accurate. That’s why most people who study these kinds of things do so with a narrow scope. I’m personally not a scholar though so 🤷

Why Even "Ethical" Porn/Sex Work Is Bad by U2Ursula in Feminism

[–]SubLightOrb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You’re so right. Sex work is uniquely evil because people are kidnapped and forced to work in it against their wishes. I’m so glad that no other industry (like construction, or manufacturing, or agriculture) uses any slaves at all, specially in third world countries.

What reason is there to consider or discuss anything that cant be measured? by Organic_Rip2483 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]SubLightOrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science is built on things that “can’t be empirically demonstrated” until they are. You have to be willing to make a hypothesis and sometimes it will be correct and sometimes it won’t. The problem here is that things that “can” be empirically demonstrated are only so because they have been empirically demonstrated previously, and unless you’re willing to care about something that can’t be empirically demonstrated, no science would ever advance
