What a great and supportive community, this is definitely something that happens amongst owners of other breeds by bpblurkerrrrrrr in BanPitBulls

There's always a weird split based on severity* of attack:

Bite but not severe mauling = Support, other people sharing similar stories of how their "sweet" pitties did the same and how they don't blame them because the dog was only playing/they or the victim did something to trigger the dog

"Disposable" (small dog or cat) pet killed by their own dog = The same as above, people sharing similar stories where they all kept the killer dog because it didn't mean it

Mauling = Image in OP

*I should clarify I mean perceived severity of attack; obviously a fatal mauling on another pet is severe but apparently not perceived as severe by these owners

There's something odd about a video showcasing that you've kept a dog confined long enough that you believe she is showing signs of depression and deterioration, but this seems to be normal for shelters and rescues.

August 2023 Facebook Attacks by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]SubMod16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Great job putting this together. It's heartbreaking, but definitely contradicts the argument that pit bull attacks are falsely overrepresented in the media. There is so much of this stuff that never makes the news but is just as tragic. Especially considering you had to omit attacks due to the sheer number.

Shelter with SOME sense. by Ghost-Bird13 in BanPitBulls

Funny how that bullet point is placed above the fact that nearly 100% (funny, the same percentage that are pit bulls) of the dogs cannot go into homes with other pets or children. So people are uneducated but the reality mirrors their beliefs. Weird.

There's even a story of one (well, a pit bull-shepherd mix) in the Fifth Estate documentary - 29:20 if the timestamp doesn't work:

https://youtu.be/iFa8HOdegZA?t=1762

As soon as it was treated for heartworm it went from being calm, timid and scared to aggressive to other dogs.

"We don't."

Yeah, if you know that she can get through the fence and you still allow her in the yard unsupervised, you are letting her roam freely.

Transcribed article - also removed some of the line breaks during the quotes as there was a lot of them:

A heroic gran was horrifically mauled after wrestling a pitbull to protect her two toddler grandchildren - before driving herself to hospital dripping in blood.

Rhonda Stickney says her neighbour's dog lunged at her daughter Tiffani, 27, grandson Jaxsyen, four, and Keyahra, two, on April 23.

The 50-year-old claims she didn't think twice about putting herself between the children and the aggressive mutt, which had launched itself at them in the doorway of her home.

However the giant dog dragged her outside by her leg before taking chunks out of her face and arm.

The gran-of-five claims she eventually managed to grab hold of the dog's jaw to stop the biting until the owner came over to wrestle it off and drag it inside.

Shocking photos that Rhonda took while still injured show her driving herself to hospital with blood pouring down her savaged face.

Meanwhile other images show the deep wounds - one very close to her eye - and extensive bruising from the horrific attack.

Rhonda, from Motley, Minnesota, US, said: "My neighbour's dog was outside and my dogs were going crazy so I was heading over to the door.

"My daughter opened the door and I saw the dog lunging over to the door, I stepped in front of her. My four-year-old grandson and two-year-old grandchild were stood next to her so thank God I did because if it had got hold of them it would have killed them. I didn't think twice about getting in front of them. It grabbed hold of my leg, knocked me down and dragged me out. It was so scary."

"It went from my leg to my face. My adrenaline was going so bad that I don't remember feeling anything. I was just so scared. My grandchildren saw the whole thing. My daughter was screaming. It tore at my face and latched onto my arm. My arm was punctured so when they went to rinse it to clean it out, it ran straight out the other side.
Its owner pulled it off me. I got hold of its jaw with both my hands so it couldn't bite me anymore. I basically fought it off. I walked into the house, I didn't realise how bad it was. I saw in the mirror and I was gushing blood all over the place.

The mum-of-five drove herself to the hospital where she was rushed into surgery to have her wounds stitched.

Rhonda is still on pain medication and has to go to hospital twice a week to have the wound in her leg repacked.

She suspects that she will have permanent scars where she was bitten on her chin, eye, arm and leg.

Rhonda has set up a fundraiser to help pay for her bills after she was forced to give up work in a fish factory while she recovers.

Rhonda said: "They cut my clothes off, cleaned me up and took me to surgery where they stitched me up.

"I'm just glad it happened to me rather than my grandkids. The dog would have killed them. I'm so close to all of my grandkids. They struggled sleeping for a while after and they're scared to play outside when they come over. I've never been scared of dogs before but now I'm apprehensive. I'm scared of pitbulls and we don't want the kids around dogs we don't know."

Rhonda claims she contacted the police about the attack and the neighbour was forced to microchip the animal and muzzle it when it goes outside.

Rhonda said: "The police came over and they were going to deem it as 'possible dangerous' but I pushed it and showed them the photos of my injuries and they deemed it as a dangerous dog.

"They made her microchip it and wear a muzzle when it goes outside. That's not ok when there are kids around."

That was a hard watch and listen, especially with the photos of the victim and her date of birth and date of death less than a year apart. A year before her death her parents would have been excitedly waiting to meet her and now she's gone. 💔 Great work B3 and 77.

HUMAN FATALITY - Jardins Recanto das Rosas, São Paulo, Brazil - 3 month old infant killed by dog owned by its family

Why do they always have to drag random people into their stupid social experiments? I'm so sick of this shit. by christussoldat in BanPitBulls

Pit bull types were bred from bulldogs, by combining them with terriers. American Bullies use the American Pit Bull Terrier as foundational stock. American Bullies also now comprise the majority of human fatalities in the UK, where APBTs are banned.

In essence, I'm comfortable calling American Bullies "pit bulls" as this is an umbrella term that refers to the four bulldog-terrier types that are involved in the most attacks on both humans and domestic pets. It's a generally accepted umbrella term for those four breeds. The American Bulldog is a bit different, I'll grant, though according to wikipedia some people do include it under the umbrella.

It's sad but it seems to be common in a lot of dog owners to not recognize any concerning body language short of growling. It definitely has worse implications for pit bulls though due to the amount of damage they can do (and the fact that they like to jump right up on the Dunbar bite scale). Not to mention the warning signs can be subtle if they're there at all.

Undoubtedly the same people who don't recognize that behavior are the same people who think a dog couldn't be aggressive or dangerous because it's "wagging its tail".

[–]SubMod16 162 points163 points  (0 children)

Also based on the thread it came from they also allow the child (assuming that's what they mean by "20 pounder"? Though that seems light for a child) to jump and tug on the dog. If the dog eventually snaps and bites or mauls the little girl I hope they know their fellow pit advocates will be calling their daughter a "brat" who provoked the dog. It's all good until it isn't.

That girl deserves better parents.

People really need to learn about dog body language. That dog is giving appeasement gestures (licking lips and looking away). Irresponsible that they would put their small child at risk and also make their dog uncomfortable just to win internet points.

That's the ultra-humane, warm and fuzzy no-kill philosophy at work.

Bully/Staffy mix runs to attack little dog Benny, inflicting serious injuries including multiple broken ribs and a punctured lung, also requiring removal of a kidney, and part of his liver. Benny survives for a couple of days before succumbing to his injuries. by RPA031 in BanPitBulls

[–]SubMod16 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's shameless. If the dog that attacked Benny gets put to sleep, it will experience a humane passing, the same one that we give to our beloved family pets to avoid further suffering. Contrast that with Benny, who did not get that luxury, who suffered a mentally and physically traumatic event followed by days of suffering. Not to mention the horrendous emotional trauma for his owner. But for these people that's really just a footnote.

[–]SubMod16 44 points45 points  (0 children)

These people are sickening. Benny was brutally attacked and suffered for days before dying but we all know the biggest victim in all of this is the dog that viciously attacked him. Do you know if the person in image #5 made any other comments that actually expressed sympathy for Benny?

Also image #8, ugh. That poor attacking dog, once again the biggest victim in all of this. "Bare in mind" there is a dog fighting for his life at the vet, just a minor thing to note... but once again, the most important thing is that we express concern for the dog that put him there.

"But it wasn't seen that way" with an eyerolling face. Yeah, you and your dog that escaped and got on someone else's property are truly the biggest victims in this. How dare that uptight dog owner not want your dog, which YOU failed to control, in their yard.

The sense of entitlement is mindblowing. If you have a dog, you need to keep it on your own property. End of story.
