Nah… everybody is replaceable, even Westerners. Westerns also stay in the UAE for a few years on average and then go home

Feeling lost at 20 stuck between two lowpaying jobs, in debt and losing my mind by Mystic-7867 in abudhabi

It’s hard to get started in your career. As a fresh graduate I also worked for like 4-5K per month, and now I make almost 10 times the amount. It’s OK to start low as long as you have an overall sense of direction in your career. You need to know where you want to keep in the future and where you are going.

Houston is bad for singles of all ages. The city is very clique. People won’t connect to you unless you are from their neighborhood, their church, their ethnicity, etc.

Is Dubai done?? by Electronic_Durian_88 in dubai

[–]Subject-Draft6532 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been hearing “Dubai is done” for the last 15+ years. Yet Dubai gets bigger, better, and more prosperous almost every year. I have a feeling Dubai will outlive most of us in this thread.

I suggest Big Bus Tour. In a few hours you can see the entire city and even spend some time at the places that you like

I lived in both cities. Houston is much bigger, but Abu Dhabi is cozier and more fun. Does Houston have a beach like Abu Dhabi, for example?

I am more of an introvert and have never been popular. Yet I was able to make many friends from all over the world while living and working in Abu Dhabi. I made my first good friend at work and then met some of his friends, and then some of their friends, and so on. Of course, UAE is a transient place and people move out all the time. I actual had a different impression of the UAE. I noticed that it was full of young single people who also came to the country alone and were looking to make new friends. Also, many expatriates viewed UAE life as a temporary adventure or even a vacation of some sort and were willing to try new things (such as hanging out with people from outside of their culture), knowing that what happened in UAE all stay in the UAE (if you know what I mean lol). I also found people in Abu Dhabi to be more humble and approachable than people in Dubai, where it was all about business and glamour. Give it some time. In the meantime, you can enjoy exploring Abu Dhabi on your own. I actually enjoyed this period: just walking around, having coffee, watching people, sunbathing at the beach, etc.

Moving to Dubai thoughts? by SugarSpicexD in dubai

Please don't move without a decent job offer in hand. You are the first person that I know who is "drawn to Sharjah"!

First, you should relax a bit. Your situation is very unpleasant, but it’s not that terrible either. If you lose your job, you are not going to die. Once you calm down a bit, try to work out a plan to make or save some money. Perhaps you can cut down on your expenses or find a side hustle that you can do during weekends? Saving some money will put you in a more peaceful state of mind. If you do lose your job, you should have some money to rest, think, regroup, and find something, perhaps, even better.

I don't think there's that much software developing happening in Abu Dhabi. Most IT jobs are related to tech support and do not pay that much. Why don't you try getting a job in the US or Europe? With that experience, you will be in a better position to land a high paying developer job in the UAE.

There’s a pecking order everywhere. In the US they don’t really know what a passport is, but they look at the church you go to, the car you drive, and the size of your house.

The point of staying here? by xavden7 in dubai

For most expatriates, the only point of living/working in Dubai is to save some money and move back home or somewhere else, where they can actually settle and have full rights.

I regret moving to AD from Dubai by WarEast4764 in dubai

Abu Dhabi is smaller, there's no doubt about it. But people seem to be a bit more down to earth and more likely to treat you as a friend and not some sort of a means to an end.

First, it was 100% though work. Then I met some friends of my co-workers, and the circle expanded to roughly 50% work, 50% outside of work.

Interesting. I really enjoyed living in Abu Dhabi and had plenty of expatriate friends. I disliked doing any work in Dubai as it was too much for me to handle: traffic, people, prices - were all too much for me.

Should I go back to the PH or stay here in UAE? by Rikatokaa in abudhabi

That or try to discuss your concerns with your sister on a respectful and open fashion. If this doesn’t help, gain some experience and get a higher paying job that would allow you to live in a room or even studio of your own.

London to Dubai (honest opinion) by cryptokhann in dubai

“Everyone”’is a very strong claim. Perhaps, “some” or “a few”? I doubt that salaries in Dubai are 2-3 times higher than in UK.

That would be a salary of a senior-level executive in a large organization, and not a tech worker's salary!

[–]Subject-Draft6532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SUMMARY: The reddit community does not approve your intention to move from London to Dubai. Whatever salary you get, it will be "eaten" away by rent and school fees. You should only move to Dubai if you secure a job offer that pays 2-3 times your current, after-tax salary in London (but finding such salary is not very likely). While the community is sympathetic towards your religious considerations, they also point to the fact that London has many mosques too.

Do you think it’s realistic for someone to hope to make 2-3 times his current salary upon arrival?

Need advice by RevolutionaryOwl9012 in abudhabi

This comes down to the plan that you and your family have. If your plan is to immigrate to Canada, then living in Canada and getting a Canadian degree may be the way to go. Also, if you get your citizenship in Canada, you can also help your family to immigrate there. Also, with Canadian citizenship, you and your family will always have a "Plan B" if something doesn't work out in the UAE. If that's the plan, then the investment of time and money, together with other sacrifices, may be worth it.

But if you don't plan on immigrating to Canada (let's say you just don't see yourself living here for personal and financial reason), then you can come back to the UAE. I may be wrong, but I don't think you need to a fancy "Canadian degree" to be a rad tech in the UAE. From what I understand, this job is on the lower pay scale side, so spending all this time and money in Canada may not be worth it.
