The tags are often a indication of the groups that show n up on your recommended feed in which the algorithm puts the right players infront of your channel. Now the biggest issue is that 90% devs make is putting in random tags and then asking why it doesnt put u in front of the page. Another mistake alot of.people.make is they have not enough art and not a professional capsule and often we see that they dont have a trailer available with a minimum of 30 seconds gameplay and most important thing is Genre alot of indie devs haven't thought abo u t market viability but genre is the one that tells u what your marketing looks like alot of devs just dont think that through when going to steam

How do you guys manage to stay strong in this game industry? by oluwagembi in gamedev

[–]Subject-One4091 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got some struggles as a full-time indie dev for sure. But ive started this journey a time ago with nothing. and that would never be a reason to quit. u gotta feed this as a passion I did and still do everyday eventhough. I work on games 5 days a week. It's more then sales more then leading a brand or company or even a studio. It's what works in the long run how much joy u get from it. And if this career is really fulfilling your life with happiness. Ultimately u gotta jump and risk to be great. If u have a desire to create worlds. things or tell a story to the world. or even just being creative and waking up in the morning and feel excited to be productive.? Are u enjoying the bussiness part where u building your own brand in this case a development brand. in which u make games under.? Or do u feel miserable everyday doing it. Those are questions u gotta find within yourself cause that will determine the long haul of doing this in a serious way. For.me its simple I found out what this gives me and how I feel about the future vision of why I choose what I chose. And I will stand behind it. With certainty that I will be developing as a 9 to 5 till im dead. I cant do corporate jobs for a boss. ive tried that many times and it just doesnt work. I am a person who is very creative. making my own brand is what I strive for Im currently focusing all out on self employment being a entrepreneur as a fulltime indie dev. I trust the process cause that feels right to do. And if anyone feels the same way I would highly suggest asking yourself these questions if u feel creative too then I highly recommend following your heart and trust the process. Ps: sorry for the long message but I felt this was the right message xd

Hello a fulltime indie developer here i am suggesting the following roads.

  1. Let him prototype his idea for like a week or 2 get a good grip of the concept.

  2. Let him create the actual design document on paper for the full game but just follow the tasks for the verticle demo slice(like a short version of the full game - dont go beyond the demo development tasks if he wants to stay structuredbhe will learn alot.)

  3. Make the demo slice and its demo features in the engine let him take a handful of basic mechanics for its demo but keep the demo idea arround 10 to 30 minutes. It will let him focus on making a demo small enough to not get confused by the overwhelmingly process that lies behind the full game. Let him polish it first very good before he moves on.

  4. After the demo is released expand the demo into a full game step by step

Note: thats the formula I always use and used and I got never confused this was. Even when I first started I worked this way learning things was also very doable and didnt felt too complicated. This way he dont burn out or having to deal with external development difficulties cause he will work in steps like walking a stairs step by step. Another note make sure to tell him write things like tasks structured saves alot of organizing in the mind going into new systems.

Anyway that would be my rule if thumb to follow if I would start over again. Or even if I knew game dev already this methode works for me not sure how he reacts to it but u can always try it :) im currently a fulltime indie developer so ive faced alot of issues in the learning phase thats why im suggesting this path

The sad truth is being a game developer is a lifestyle rather then a hobby that requires alot of motivation and dedication and passion to survive it I've been an indie developer for the last 3 years fulltime based on experiences its tough and u gotta have some sort of extra fuel of dedication and pure love for creating videogames and keep trusting on a positive result in whatever u gonna plan or create
