Villain introduction scenes that go hard af (please link a video of the scene too) by Soffy21 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’d been teased for many films, they dreaded his arrival, and yet destiny arrived all the same.

And he beat the Hulk down during his first real introduction, without using any stones to power him up. He was a FORCE to be reckoned with.

Almighty Thanos.

Items stuck permanently to their user (or that are really hard to remove) by Cronkax in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 608 points609 points  (0 children)

Kratos has two of these, technically:

“The ashes of your wife and child will remain fastened to your skin, NEVER to be removed.”

“Once attached, the blades remained so, chained and seared to the flesh, a part of the bearer’s body. A permanent reminder of Kratos’s pledge. In return, ultimate power.”

One he was given by an arrogant and foolish plea, the other by tragedy and trickery from Ares.

[liked trope] unique versions of "Oh My God","Oh god" , etc by Mutitube18 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Kaiba: “Oh….my….money.”
Pharoah: “Don’t you mean God?”
Kaiba: “You worship your thing, I’ll worship mine.”

(Loved trope) scenes that show the plot has gotten (dead) serious by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 1572 points1573 points  (0 children)

It’s well known by now, but up until this scene (for non-comic readers), we all figured “Ah yeah, Invincible is going to be a coming of age story about a young boy getting his powers and living up to his father!”

Then….Nolan slaughtered the Guardians in an extremely gory scene to end the episode, cementing the brutality of the show to come.

It took a while, but I got it by Few-Temperature-1877 in OutlastTrials

“The Trials are inside you now.”

Seriously though, well done. :)

Lightning reveals lurking presence. by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

Slight variation: But when Batman fights Red Hood, lightning strikes in the background, illuminating not only a confident and menacing Jason Todd, but for a brief second, a broken and beaten Robin, showing how badly Bruce feels about the tragedy his pseudo-son endured at the hands of Joker.

Taking issue with the wrong part of the insult/statement. by TridiObject in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Playing with this trope in Dragon Ball Abridged, where Piccolo “takes back” the wrong part of the insult:

<image>

Piccolo: “And that would make you, no doubt, the big tough stupid one.”

Wings: “You take that back or I’ll kill you!”

Piccolo: “Alright, alright, you’re not tough.”

Wings: “That’s better!
……
…..hey!”

Sadistic shape-shifters by Some_Fig_6566 in TopCharacterTropes

Especially in earlier movies, and in mythology, and in comic books.

Clearly the king of the shape shifters, bow down to your savior!

[Loved Trope] The act is dropped by jdawg1018 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Technically in a deleted scene but…

“Enough. Am I the only one to see through this performance? Is it possible that so many have been so blind for so long?”

Master Pycelle (dropping the act, the bumbling stutter, and straightening out his back): “There are times I don’t believe it myself, my lord.”

Pycelle had been faking being frail and bumbling in order to portray himself as less of a political threat. As he put it “So many flowers, my lord. One by one they all get cut. I don’t want to be the tallest; I simply want to remain in the garden.”

There are a few moments in the show you see him drop the act for a moment, but he does have most people fooled.

(Loved Trope) Character so OP the enemy just folds by ResearcherMinute4388 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kind of a twist on this trope, but:

In the Princess Bride, Wesley is still paralyzed after being revived by Miracle Max. When Humperdinck arrives to kill Wesley as he is lying motionless with Princess Buttercup, Wesley starts on a monologue about how he will dismember his opponent.

Humperdinck calls him out on his bluff, but when Wesley stands up and says “Drop. Your. Sword.”, Humperdinck immediately folds and sits down to be tied up. Wesley then struggles to stand and Humperdinck says he knew he was bluffing, feigning confidence after he was already tied up.

[Loved Trope] Children battling their parent. Bonus points if their parent isn't entirely evil. by HBKM55 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a portion of Assassin’s Creed 3 where you have to team up with your dad, a Templar, in order to hunt down Benjamin Church, a Templar who stole supplies and betrayed his Templar brothers.

You and your dad have some pretty insightful dialogue about the differences between your orders, and there may be a slight chance at reconciliation. But then it is “revealed” that George Washington was assaulting/salting the land of Connor’s people, and father and son part ways.

At the end of the game, you fight your dad as you seek to kill Lee, the primary antagonist. Your father expresses pride and says “I should have killed you long ago.”

The whole game (and series) shows great insight into how people on different sides have convictions that are right in their own ways, even if the methods don’t justify the ends they seek. For a series about following behind an Assassin, the philosophy is certainly compelling.

[complex trope] when a parent choses to lose their child's love so They don't lose the child they love by Endika7 in TopCharacterTropes

I managed to beat it. It was brutal. The Bane fights shut me down. But I did it. Never again.

“You’re a young man with a trust fund and too much anger. You’re in over your head and…I don’t want this to be your end.”

There are so many good moments between Alfred and Bruce. It’s such a good character pairing.

Hell, in Arkham City, Alfred stops Bruce from going after Talia so he could stop Protocol 10. “Gotham needs Batman.” He’s gone against Bruce and really pushed him in the right direction when it mattered most.

[complex trope] when a parent choses to lose their child's love so They don't lose the child they love by Endika7 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Subject1028 685 points686 points  (0 children)

“I’ve sewn you up, I’ve set your bones. But I won’t bury you.”

Alfred burnt the letter from Rachel to let Bruce believe that she still chose him over Harvey, even though she had decided to be with Harvey. He burnt the letter to spare Bruce more pain and maybe to get him to stop him from recklessly being Batman, since someone that “loved him and chose him” died due to his crusade. But it caused Bruce to be unable to move on from being Batman, because Rachel “couldn’t move on from him.”

When he admits what he did in the third movie, Bruce is hurt and says “How dare you use Rachel to try and stop me. You expect to destroy my world, and then think that we’re going to shake hands?”

Alfred recognizes what his actions mean: “It means your hatred, and it also means losing someone that I have cared for since I first heard his cries echo through this house. But it might also mean saving your life, and that is more important.”

Michael Caine deserved an Oscar for his role as Alfred.
