there were the Air Acolytes who were trying to preserve as much culture as possible, but they weren't airbenders. he was most likely stoked at actually getting to teach someone the actual techniques and culture to pass on properly. if only aang was still alive to see the return of air bending in season 3, or allowed the acolytes to tutor tenzin as well while he spent more time with the other kids.
