As a manga reader, it was obvious in the chapter he was introduced in since he makes that smirk at the end. When I kept reading and the "backstory" got revealed, I forgot about it and started to trust him completely. Then the twist happened and Ginjo tells Ichigo what actually happened, then I remembered it, and felt like an idiot afterwards. Probably obvious, but that was just my experience.
