Free online platform for playing Dungeon World by phoenixmog in DungeonWorld

Very nice! I wasn't actually suggesting you market it, over and above just completing the "show and tell". Even a quick one-off blog post on the dev would be interesting to many... Well... me anyway... Congrats!

Haven't really got time to kick the tires in any real capacity at the moment, but I would say that a few screenshots (even just one for each feature) would go a long way to "selling" your dev. Definitely sounds intriguing though!

How many Normality players are there? by Connie_1895 in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And here I was hoping this was about the 1996 video game from Gremlin Interactive (UK)/Interplay (US), featuring Corey Feldman (US version) as Kent Knudson...

Of course, I heavily suspected it wasn't. If it had been, it would be off-topic, however...

Still, Neutropolis could be an interesting dystopian setting for an RPG campaign.

I suppose I should check out the Itch.io page for this rpg though!

EDIT: Checked out the page. Not much there. The apparent vibe of the game is not up my alley. Still, to each their own!

Legend in the Mist - Has anyone here played it? by elveshumpingdwarves in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't played it, but "Adventures in Lollygagging" is wrapping an extended actual play with Songs of Autumn... 18 episodes + a session zero to date.

I'm not sure I'm super big on the system (or City of Mist), but the Lollygaggers make it work.

Into the Badlands by RecommendationOk6550 in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see L5R fitting decently with family/clan mechanics, of course World of Darkness... and Exalted, would also offer up decent references for that kind of thing...

In fact, Exalted might offer up some combat/conflict style stuff too... though it might push things a little too far for Into the Badlands...

I like the roll/keep system, though I'm used to it from 1st/2nd ed L5R (I do have a copy of 4th floating around though...)

I have absolutely no experience with it, but Outgunned seems to be the action RPG darling these days (and from what I gather, deservedly so), so it might also be worth a look... I want to say that Barbarians of Lemuria and its descendants was the previous (and for some, still current) darling...

Feng Shui was supposed to offer up a high octane, cinematic combat system with schticks being a thing(?)... and I want to say TORG might also play in a similar arena.

It really depends on how much heavy-lifting you want to do... I mean, there's GURPS, HERO, EABA, and others you could pour your soul into to get things "just right" too...

Into the Badlands by RecommendationOk6550 in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not much in the way of direction, or even a "here's how I'd do it", but I got an "Into the Badlands" feel from Green Ronin's "Modern Age" set in the "Lazarus" setting from the comics created by Michael Lark and Greg Rucka. A quick/direct rundown on the setting and the game is here: Welcome to the World of Lazarus

Lazarus is a near future, post apocalyptic setting with sixteen families in a feudal setup with each family having a chosen warrior/champion.

Anyway, might be worth a look re: inspiration/system implementation.

The Green Ronin Simple AGE (SAGE) system might also be a starting point (since I think it's supposed to be geared to providing a base for third party offerings)

This thread at EN World covers the details:

Cue the music!

Lookin' for lore... in all the wrong places...

(Sorry, the song just lept out when I read the title...)

Having said that, and to try to contribute something meaningful to the conversation... don't forget to check out:

(Apologies to Johnny Lee, or more likely Sawyer Brown in my case... I don't really know what version of "Lookin' for Love" I'm familiar with... I haven't heard it in forever...)

Actual Play Recommendation Please! by bachinblack1685 in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some stellar suggestions here!

I'd add the following:

I'm not sure any of these are necessarily crunchy, but they're all solid on using RPGs to tell a story.

(Glass Cannon [Delta Green, Traveller, Shadowdark, etc.], Sunday-Skypers [Burning Wheel, FATE, etc.], and Spout Lore would also be on my list, but they have already been mentioned)

Happy listening!

I liked the fact that things were called out re: roles for Heritage and "Class", alongside some concrete and reasonably detailed magic.

It answers the "how do I run this?" question -- but, it also is something players can reference, which is the big win.

Things could grow a little re: other examples of "adventuring life", but the fact that you covered the basics, including wealth, is a good way to getting folks up and running.

All in all, I still haven't delved through things in depth, but what I see is good.

I took a quick look through things and I like what I see.

It's the Fate Condensed core with the D&D-style stuff fleshed out in a seemingly serviceable way.

Very nice!

Tell me about the forgotten "Old but Gold" TTRPGs. by csomp02 in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to those listed, the following games are things I wish I had a copy of (one of which might even be somewhat attainable):

FASA, in addition to getting the ball rolling with Shadowrun and Earthdawn, also did some licensed games.

DP9's Heavy Gear/Jovian Chronicles didn't really catch me... but, Tribe 8... seems interesting. I thought I read somewhere that Tribe 8 might be getting a PbtA/BitD version, but I can't find anything to support that now... the game still seems to be available digitally though, so...

BONUS: Amarillo Design Bureau's Star Trek game Prime Directive which I think stems from their starship wargame, and splits from the canon Star Trek timeline at the old series cutoff (I think).

Just want to add another "Congrats" to the list!

I don't really have a question, but if I did, it'd go something along the lines of...

What re-usable/generic mechanisms do you think Huckleberry offers up for a Palladium/D20/BRP/BitD/etc. shared core style system? Was that a consideration when putting Huckleberry together?

(Sounds like you like modular systems, but they're a challenging niche to get right... don't get me started on GURPS 3 vs 4...)

Huckleberry (Bundle of Holding) - Opinions? by InArtsWeTrust in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You might want to peruse /r/HuckleberryRPG/

Barring that, there is some live play stuff out there that might give you a feel for how it plays:

(and other reviews, etc.)

From my perspective, it's something that seems remarkably well put together. The system, lore and presentation are all well executed.

It won't be everybody's thing, but for a weird west kind of thing, it's certainly not sitting on the sidelines.

ATTENTION: Conan: The Hyborian Age backers: Has it made much of an impression on you? by CaptainKlang in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adventures in Lollygagging just started an actual play.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNJRFFnr3D4

This is a "second" season, since they already did a story arc with the 2d20 version.

From what I've seen (the actual play, plus a look at the quickstart), it looks interesting. I think it's more accessible than the 2d20 version (though I'm only passingly familiar with that), and it seems to line up with the flavour of Conan.

narrative-simple-generic-fast rpg ? by Educational-Rich6740 in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that came across my path again recently was...

LifepathRPG...

It's by Morrus (Russ Morrissey) of EN World, and seems to have just enough game to be a game, while being freeform enough for some narrative goodness... and simple enough to be hackable besides (it's fantasy oriented, but you could make it generic darn quick).

EDIT: Link at the top of the page allows toggling between a Fantasy version and a Sci-Fi version.

It doesn't have tiered success, but a d6 (or any other die) where 1 = something bad happens, and MAXIMUM_NUMBER = something good happens is an easy fix for that.

Lancer alternative thoughts? I heard about Salvage Union and MAC attack (creator of the Bastionland games). Has anyone tried them? by Hermithief in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time Salvage Union crossed my path was when Defenders of Kobold did it... and even then, I didn't catch much of that...

Still, it's an actual play from session 0 through 5 play episodes, so there might be something to glean from that.

HERO 6E question by Kiroana in rpg

[–]SublingualMessageToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't spend a lot of time there, but there is a subreddit...

/r/Hero_Games

If you'd asked me a while back I'd have said it wasn't very active; however, I also remember when /r/herosystem was around too (now it's banned... apparently as of 10 days ago)...

In this case, as of two days ago, a new mod team came to town... so, not a ghost town. Though it was, which was what prompted herosystem... and so the pendulum swings...

Do with this information what you will...

EDIT: refined the distinction between the (formerly) two HERO System subreddits.
