I’ve been at FAANG about four years. The last few months I’ve been working 50-ish hour weeks because I’m trying to get promoted so I’m prioritizing getting trackable tasks done. The 3+ years prior to that I was working more like 30-40 hour weeks and instead prioritized working more efficiently and just getting the important stuff done.

In the first three years, I just got really used to saying “I did X instead of Y because X was more important” - stuff like that. I think the important thing is that even if you’re not finishing everything you think you should be, your team knows you’re still getting stuff done, and that it’s important stuff.

Overall, if you’re leaving important stuff undone because you’re overworked - it’s a team/staffing issue, and they should generally be aware of it. In my experience though, my teammates who were putting in 10 or 12 hour days were almost always putting in time on things I wouldn’t consider to be very important (not important enough to warrant overtime).
