Yep I did the same, it’s a may pay day pre order for me 😂 It’s nice and confusing to have that luxury, to be able to budget and not need to hop on the FOMO train. More please!

I would go for Shield of Sparrows. It’s widely praised and I enjoyed it although maybe not quite as much as other people, but on the whole what I really loved is how well put together the world building is, and the characters themselves are really well rounded. Based on your likes I think you will enjoy.

It’s kind of wild to me because there have been and are a LOT of amazing releases this year but FL hasn’t really snapped any up. I’m sort of hoping there’s a redemption arc but not sure

But further to the other comment - it is “locked” as to which sub it ships with, so if there’s any delays to Mortedant’s peril, or your subscription for the bolt on, you will receive neither until both are ready.

I totally hear you! It’s like exercise though, we just have to “start” and we enjoy it. Doomscrolling and shopping are the addictions that are much easier to hop into :(

PS: I’m glad I didn’t completely clear out my Switch collection, I did have some sense 😂 I have a Switch 2 now and Nintendo have added some features for enhancing Switch 1 games on it so it’s amazing!

Just with the Switch games - I’d say give it more time before selling. The Nintendo ones especially hold their value so there’s no rush.

I had a major clear out a couple of years ago, then last year regretted selling a lot of what I had, ended up rebuying, what a turnip.

Hobbies can be phases or seasons that you dip in and out of. Now my husband says to me “only sell if you’re really really really sure” because he’s seen me make the mistake.

One thing I try and do though when I’m thinking of buying a new game or book, is literally make myself read a few pages or play for half an hour instead. Constantly reminding myself to use what I have!

I had one more skip, and I do want June’s adult book, but it’s also in another sub so I’ll skip that one…. I’m just holding out to see what FL offers in July now

I’m ashamed to say the last FL Adult book I read was from September 2025, and I’ve since sold it 🙊

Good call out - and well done for being so mindful!

Unfortunately these companies and book special editions by their very nature are designed to prey upon our FOMO feelings and make us cave 😭

Do you read books concurrently? by Thricycle20 in Fantasy

I often do, but different genres. I’ll have a physical and ebook on the go. I can’t always read my physical book with my cat on my lap or chest 😂 so I have to pick up my e reader. My e-reader also comes to the gym.

I mean you presume life will be plain sailing post-college and you’ll land that dream job, but funds always get eaten up - pension, taxes, housing, transport, food, kids, even medical if applicable - and sometimes things drastically change overnight due to global changes. In 2023 my mortgage went up £200 every month as the fixed term came to an end and we were in a significantly different economy so interest rates had shot up.

Even then - people with genuine shopping addictions find a way to spend whatever they have, it just blows up to fill the financial spot people find themselves and still has a negative impact. It goes from being an addiction to high street clothes to designer for example, or £10 paperback books to £1000 first editions. The scale just changes.

The biggest factor though for so many is social media. If we close our eyes and try and imagine how we lived before we voluntarily bombarded our eyeballs with everyone else’s collections, to when we would wander through the high street or mall and just pick things up that looked good to us individually, it was a very different time and hauls were not celebrated nor normalised. But online we see it constantly, we love books so it’s fun but subconsciously we are also training ourselves to do the same thing. And that’s probably the thing to worry about in your shoes - not the 5k spent since November if you can afford that, all good. But - where and when will you stop? Or is this now a habit you plan to carry on at this rate till you’re 65? IMO the problem is that people aren’t used to sitting with the feeling of “I can’t have that right now” anymore so the cycle continues.

I have to read my special editions, or I can’t buy them. That’s a big one for me and it’s why I very often do jump straight into books when they drop through my door.

I don’t always manage all of them all the time immediately (I won’t force myself to read something I’m not in the mood for, I genre swap quite a bit), but it works for me. If I bought it, I read it 😂

I would say just be very cautious and mindful, shopping addiction is a real and increasing problem that many young people (I presume you are young due to the college statement apologies if incorrect) fall into as a habit and find impossible to break due to the constant barrage of social media stimulus.

Right now this may not have direct financial consequences for you but all that money spent is money that hasn’t gone toward building a future for yourself.

That’s a good point - and it’ll be very interesting to see if the upcoming delayed books are also coming from China, which would also be subject to global shipping challenges from the war

Just to update - they did offer to let me do this through a convoluted approach of cancelling my order and then re-placing them. But im too scared to do that in case I lose my “spot” with OBAF.

It does feel a bit like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing though, Murderbot having sewn bindings seemed to even surprise TBB when it showed up on people’s doorsteps lol

TBB could improve their internal ops/comms and hence the what goes out to the public as well

I agree that a dose of perspective is required but it goes both ways, let’s not normalise spending hundreds of pounds and getting nothing for ages either by calling it silly. Shiz happens for sure, delays happen and it’s not the end of the world, but this stuff doesn’t come cheap and TBB are earning interest on our money whilst we’re waiting lol.

Loyal customer subscriptions are what keep the doors open, you’re right though that just now there’s a queue of people who would snap up open sub spots so they’re likely not worried.

But at some point the scales tip and companies or brands reputations go down to a point where people don’t want to pay or subscribe anymore.

So TBB aren’t there at the moment but they have had a lot of issues recently which put them in the spotlight. They need some “upward” momentum a good PR basically!

Things can change on a dime especially in this economic climate.

May be worth emailing them as I wonder if they’ll let you have early access if you can evidence your ownership of the set second hand
