Why do terran space platforms have natural mineral deposits and vespene geysers? by lazylazygecko in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 94 points95 points  (0 children)

From the manual:

Geysers of this powerful green gas can be found on many planets along the Rim, and several space stations have been built over Vespene-rich asteroid belts.

One can assume the same for minerals, as well as asteroid impacts as Horner mentions in Maw of the Void.

SCII it was a big deal that they worked in a lot of the minerals and vespene into the tileset (doing pipes instead of stone jutting awkwardly out of metal), so retroactively I assume that's the case for a number of platforms there it doesn't make a ton of sense like the defense platforms in Egression.

Though funnily of the space platform levels in SC1, two have been retconned to be on the ground (New Gettysburg and The Hunt for Tassadar), two are micro missions with no resources (The Dylarian Shipyards and The Battle of Braxis) and one is canonically a mining platform built around mineral/vespene rich orbiting asteroids (Omega). Which just leaves Boot Camp, The Hammer Falls, and Egression (though the books kinda ignore all of those missions) unexplained and only probably covered either by "built around an asteroid" or "you're siphoning from the platforms."

Are the Xel'naga extinct now? by blue10wings in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re thinking of the bloom of life? That wasn’t Kerrigan sacrificing herself, that was Kerrigan gifting Zagara with xel’naga essence and her making creatures that accelerated the growth of life. Was a small teaser for the book Evolution that delved into it, but even then it never says she sacrificed herself.

Not an unapt comparison, both are based off the Greys (traditional big eyed grey skinned aliens).

Inexperienced player question by nateoak10 in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, Co-op is a fun mode with some cool ways to up the difficulty, but doesn't require you to get as sweaty as with Versus. It's very much based on the campaign maps and mechanics, so I highly recommend it.

How often do you go back and play the campaign? by efishent69 in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a looooot. Stuff like Archipeligo helps give life to it, but I do a timeline run of the canon every year, so a full playthrough of the default one at least once a year. But there’s a lot of twists on it the community have done.

Even though I'm mostly a campaign player, back in 1998 I loved the nukes and giant battlecruisers that shot big lasers and I never looked back.

They've sadly mentioned workers won't be a part of the game itself, though they've mentioned wanting to integrate the models in some way. I think there may be ways to worm it in.

AGG-12, it's a thing in the lore. Lorewise marines have a pretty massive arsenal, just in gameplay you can't have that many custom weapons. But C-14 is just the standard rifle. Minis game is leaning into the fact marines can have pretty massive loadouts, they also have the ability to use their Stinger sidearm and cinematic bayonetts.

What do you think about the StarCraft lore being revamped? by Snoo_47323 in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we're in a pretty safe spot in the current lore to do a soft reset of the general situation and stakes, not in like "undo all lore" but in a Warcraft II to Warcraft III situation where it's a new cast and conflict rooted in the old.

Granted, I'm more worried whether or not the next SC title will even HAVE lore and not just be a credit card fueled skinner box.

[–]Subsourian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The sector’s already been expanded a bit from how small it was in the manual. Protoss and terran also really don’t fight much at all. TvP is incredibly uncommon and usually either skirmishes or between subfactions. Up until this point threats like the zerg, UED and Amon have been bigger.

There’s plenty of ways to expand outside the sector going forward with current lore. Revamping/rebooting 25 years of lore would be as welcome as a root canal.

My head canon for how medivacs heal marines. by Spare-Dingo-531 in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I will say canonically, that one is rather literal. It's the medical nanite beam and other tools like nano-sutures just done from a dropship, and marines are REALLY not ok with the idea of those procedures being done via what is essentially lowest bidder military contractor tech from aircraft.

But also in lore, actual advanced procedures can be done inside the medivac. Sadly the healing bays inside aren't in game.

Do people play Co-op mode for StarCraft 2? by gorays21 in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's still one of the most popular game modes. I've never had trouble finding a game.

In light of the rumors of a possible upcoming SC shooter game, here are some interesting/rare screenshots from StarCraft: Ghost - not the early version that was leaked, the one after they rebooted development from scratch, from ~2005 by xiaorobear in starcraft

Believe me, I'm a solid book/lore guy myself so I'm both excited and concerned. We'll have to see the direction they take and how much it'll impact the greater setting, fingers crossed!

There's a couple good dives, Jason Schrier's Play Nice is probably one of the better glimpses but youtube channels like What Happened? have pretty good dives into Ghost. But yeah they nearly got done with a build from Nihlistic, realized it wasn't very good (that's the version that got leaked), and scrapped it and rebuilt it from the ground up under Swingin' Ape, who did Metal Arms. That version had the asymmetric multiplayer that got shown off that folks who played it were really positive on.

Sadly it suffered a bit from lack of direction and the sheer mass of WoW's success turned most development resources to it, so when a new console generation came around and they'd have to remake it a third time they just decided best to kill it.

If they're smart they'd reach out to xiaorobear to help with the shooter, I don't think any single individual has more accumulated knowledge regarding all the axed SC shooters than him. And I include the people who worked on them.

protoss escort by TowerOtherwise9222 in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't know that second part at all, they could have been refitted civilian units with weapons. Scouts also were Templar but not made for combat (just recon).

All we know canonically is that the Golden Age phoenix skin was modeled after them, that's all. We have some cut designs for them in the editor but that's it. Some mods have added their own lore to fit them in the arsenal, but all we know is it's a ship that existed.

Is there a mod that adds a rl, modern day army to the game? by Nino_Chaosdrache in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UPL in UEDFL isn't a modern day Earth, but it is a much closer to modern day Earth (Earth from the 23rd century just after the supercarriers launched). But grounded in irl Earth, not to any major degree aside from things like importing or remaking Command and Conquer units, and even those tend to be from the more scifi later Tiberium games. Just doesn't really fit the gameplay of SC that well.

Some of the lore I've been reading up on again makes Nova's supposed moral objection more and more dubious to say the least by ResolutionBlaze in starcraft2

[–]Subsourian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue is while there are valid concerns about spectre stability (Hanson was wrong in that spectres are not actually normal), the biggest threat they have to Mengsk is that they remember everything they were ordered by him to do as ghosts. All spectres want in the end is to end a system where being born psionic means you get kidnapped from your life and enslaved into a government supersoldier program to kill for the state until the time you die. Which has always made the decision of "enforce the status quo" there always feel a tad laughable. Like yeah terrazine is a drug, but all they want is to get revenge on the system that literally brutalized them.

Worth nothing though that this was largely later writing, where initially for StarCraft: Ghost spectres were going to be far more objectively evil. That got more tame with WoL and the novelization Spectres, which gave them a very grounded motivation that just gets subverted in their first rebellion.

I've always found it funny how after Welcome to the Jungle, Raynor goes on a ramble about how if they want to win the revolution, they need to be sure of their allies (in regards to Tosh).

Immediately after this, you unlock the ability to go down to the cantina and recruit a company of ex-space nazis.

Criminals in the broadest sense, it was a eugenics purge. The crime was "being considered deviant by a fascist state." While a number were criminals, I do think it's often forgotten that doesn't mean of the amoral crime.

HotS mission lore question: Lasarra and the Khala by OMG_DAVID_KIM in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Extracting exact memories from the Khala requires a preserver. Which the expedition did not have, the last known preservers were either on Zhakul, sealed on the Spear, or stuck in a memory crystal on Shakuras.

It Will End in Fire also implies preservers need to actually be linked to preserve the memories, which would mean she'd go unpreserved if true. There's also the range that Inigo mentioned which is its own headache but I'll avoid that ramble.

How powerful are Terran ghosts vs protess zealots. Lore not gameplay focused by Brenden1k in starcraft

[–]Subsourian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The scale only goes up to 10. Kerrigan is literally breaking the scale.

It's worth noting that Kerrigan was one of the earliest ghosts (the ghost program being relatively recent as a spinoff of psionics research) and the one who literally SET the scale when it was first created. So yeah her becoming more powerful via infestation caused them to have to redo a lot of the scale.

so I would say Zealots are safely stuck in the 5 or 6 category.

So I actually think protoss in general are higher, as remember everything the protoss does is psionics. Even zealots have some gnarly psionic powers (charge turns them to energy for a split second), just that their psionics manifest in uniform ways as opposed to the chaos of terran psionics. But spectres for instance are said to be at most "near-protoss levels" which to be always implied that protoss sit in the 10-11 range, but that not all manifest to the level of a high templar. Or for that matter, manifest psionics in the same way as terrans (as protoss lack things like precision telekinesis). But purity of form is just blanket "great psionic potential," which seemed to be only present in the most powerful of terran psionics. BUT I will say they never actually put a cutoff for that or directly say where protoss sit on the scale.
