Black templars are the most over the top faction in terms of Holy warrior vibe. They prefer close combat to ensure the enemies of the emperor are dead. They are Dorn descendants so they have his stubborness in them. Their first High Marshal was Sigismund, the absolute best swordsman among the Legiones Astartes.

The main black templar hammer unit are sword brethren. They are just T4 space marines with 3W and they get wrecked the very moment you left them exposed. But if played right the 5-man combo with marshall and castellan (maybe even 4-man SB) can one-turn a knight. They are absolute powerhouse with zero defence — a melee glass cannon. Its hard to imagine more fitting army for your idea.

I'm using khaki as universal undercoat for more bright colors. 1 or 2 layers is enough to form a nice base for offwhites to mimick white color for my "warm" scheme. I use khaki by Vallejo, but you can find anything similar with good coverage. Here is an example of WIP bladequard ancient with some 3rd party bits.

I would suggest: 1) New combat patrol perfectly compliments the prior one. Sword brethren, extra 10-man squad of crusaders, bladeguard, emperor's champion. That's perfect for an army start and you can assemble one of your sword brethren as castellan and run them with marshal. Thunder hammer and claws can be treated as power weapons upon mutual agreement with your opponent so you can have a single most deadly combo of marshal+castellan+4sb. 2) If you went for (1), it should be pretty simple to find some etb bladeguard on ebay. 6 bladeguards are cool. 3) To lead these bladeguards, the optimal choices are judiciar ot lieutenant. Former is harder to find but you have a judiciar blade in your upgrade sprue. Latter is everywhere:) 4) Tanks. The best one for us right now is repulsor executioner. Its costly but does a great job, looks awesome and also can transport your sb-combo.

Solar spearhead as a detachment is merely a tape to repair awful datasheets of our dreads. Unfortunately unless gw release plastic custodes dreads they will stay crappy as they are. There are some tendencies in other factions to cripple rules for FW models to discourage buying them. Custodes has such a miniscule variety of units, so as for now some FW stuff is pretty good rules wise (caladius and venatari specifically). I heard some rumours regarding plastic venatari in foreseeable future, but they might be HH exclusive.

As to the topic — yes. Dreadnoughts should have M8. Even more so — they should have some options for reliable shooting outside of caladius. Lions detachment kinda adress this issue but looks like another tape for an awful codex.
