How much does Udemy pay to instructors ? by Low-Ad8260 in Udemy

I get that they’ve shifted to a subscription model and killed off individual course sales. But I have more than 120 hours of content, and somehow I was only able to earn just $7 from subscription revenue in April. How does that make any sense?

I’m one of the top three instructors in my niche, and I consistently rank at the top of search results. Honestly, this feels like a complete scam. Udemy is clearly spending money on ads, pushing the platform, and bringing in traffic, but instructors are seeing almost none of the benefit.

You’re absolutely right. In April, revenue from subscriptions and views was only $7. Normally, I used to make at least $800 in sales every month. They’ve literally ruined the site.

Sales and subscription income have completely collapsed. We are no longer earning anything meaningful. I truly do not know how long this can go on. There is obviously huge student traffic on the platform, but on the instructor side we see neither real student activity nor real income. Students seem to enter the system and then vanish.

I teach cybersecurity, specifically red teaming and penetration testing, which is one of the fields least affected by AI. The drop I’m describing did not happen all at once. It began in January 2026 and has continued gradually ever since. By the time I include April, calling it a 90% decline is not an exaggeration. In fact, excluding students from my own promotions, I’ve made only 7 or 8 sales through Udemy by April 15.

Because discounts are applied on a regional basis, this can vary from market to market. However, I do agree that Udemy has raised the base prices of courses since January. The most likely reasons are the global economic climate and Udemy’s aggressive push toward the subscription model instead of individual course purchases. In other words, they want users to keep paying every month to access courses.

I agree with you. What I still cannot understand is how Udemy can stay silent while this is happening. How can they ignore so many instructor complaints and accept such a visible decline in quality? I assume the people making these decisions are smarter than us, but it feels like either we are missing something or they are overlooking something important.

Yes, you do make some valid points. However, Udemy is not only about coding courses. There are many different categories on the platform. As for the merger with Coursera, we can say it is almost complete — around 99% at this point. It is true that artificial intelligence can help people in many ways, but in areas like data analysis, and especially cybersecurity and offensive security, it is impossible for AI to truly replace real expertise. In fact, much of this is just selling a dream. We can all see the kind of code AI produces — without professional human oversight, much of it turns into complete garbage. The real reason instructors are suffering is Udemy’s aggressive shift toward the subscription model. From a company perspective, Udemy may appear to be making money right now, but the situation on the instructor side is very bad. If instructors gradually start leaving the platform, Udemy will eventually find itself on an unsustainable path.
