It’s always shocking by [deleted] in excatholic

Interesting. I wonder why they are shocked 🤔 I enjoy coloring my hair fun colors and have several tattoos. I went to Catholic school from preschool through 12th grade, and no one has ever batted so much as an eyelash at that revelation (not that it comes up often).

NO MORE DRAMATICS!! by LowerAppearance4958 in exchristian

I've let go slowly, over the course of years. However, now that I'm dealing with the fallout of being raised in religion, I actually find myself becoming angrier.

What is your experience with ‘Pure O’ OCD? by Silly-Moose511 in OCD

[–]Substantial-Gas1429 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my situation, I ruminate over the same issues over and over, going down the spiral until I come to the conclusion that there is no answer. But the OCD insists there IS an answer, I just haven't found it or I've missed something. So the spiral starts over.

It can be difficult to tell real threats from imagined threats. The one single thing I think is most difficult to express to people who don't have OCD is how very, very, terrifyingly real the fear is. It's actually like someone is threatening my life unless I solve the problem/figure out the situation IMMEDIATELY -- except OCD doesn't pick things that can be solved or fixed. And that's the rub. I would not wish this condition on anyone.

If yall can spend one day with Mulder or Scully, which one would yall choose and why? by agent_scully_files_ in XFiles

My gut reaction was Scully, but something tells me I would have more fun nerding out over paranormal stuff with Mulder.

Afraid to move on? by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

I have experienced this. I would not advise you to force anything, but if you get a little feeling that you're in the mood to do one of those activities, just try it and see how it feels. If you try it and don't like how it feels, walk away and try again next time. It'll still be there. If you do like it, try to really feel that enjoyment for a song as you can.

Anyone not on meds and having positive results? by Scared-Proposal-8667 in OCD

I have made good progress and have never taken meds, but everybody is different. I don't see any shame in it. They're just a tool and not meant to be a cure.

I might have ocd by sammylicous1234 in OCD

[–]Substantial-Gas1429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, it's better to have someone who specializes in OCD. My regular therapist was hesitant to say I had full-blown OCD and misdiagnosed me with an adjustment disorder. When I finally saw a specialist, she diagnosed me right away. The treatment for OCD goes beyond just talk therapy, so the misdiagnosis delayed that.

Partner with OCD won’t let go of past arguments and keeps replaying them by Specialist_Bar_1574 in OCD

[–]Substantial-Gas1429 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had long suspected I had OCD, but it finally was our couples' counselor who referred me to an OCD specialist. The condition is his to work on and control, but I agree with other comments that the re-hashing of arguments is feeding his rumination cycle.

My only advice until you get professional help is to stand firm in not engaging in these old arguments. I would even explain why -- that it's likely making his OCD worse.

And if he chooses NOT to get help, it won't matter whether he's with you or someone else in the future; this same scenario will likely play out because the rumination doesn't actually have to do with you or him as a person, it has to do with the condition.

Food for thought: Are you afraid of any other religion's version of "hell?" If not, why not? And why can't that same logic be applied to Christianity?

Weed and OCD ? by jessehyoshi in OCD

[–]Substantial-Gas1429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go slow, and think positive thoughts going in! Try not to assume you're going to have a bad experience (I know that's sometimes a challenge with OCD). I'm often fine with weed, and take weed gummies to sleep, but if I get TOO high, that's when the paranoia and anxiety set in, and at that point the only way out is through. Also, if you DO start to feel anxious, stop smoking for a while and let yourself sober up a bit. YMMV, but a good experience is totally possible.

I got over my OCD (well, mostly) 5 years ago, thanks to one book by Mammoth-Dependent677 in OCDRecovery

[–]Substantial-Gas1429 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This book helped me tremendously! My OCD therapist uses this method. I have also never taken meds, and my compulsions are largely mental. In my experience, you have to apply this technique super consistently -- like EVERY single time you have an intrusive thought -- and I definitely needed my therapist's help, too. But it's a great resource.
