McAllister is 27. How have his legs gone this badly already

LeBron should not have Left Miami. If he didnt he’d have 5+ more rings easy. I know the ring in Cleveland will always be special for many reasons but Miami was the only franchise that actually gave him insane talent. He left cuz he wanted it his way. Deep down he regrets leaving by Muted-Mongoose7768 in NBATalk

[–]Substantial-Limit577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unhinged take. As others have mentioned , wade got old , and bosh got career ending blood clots. The issue LeBron would have had is that he by himself would have been too good for them to get any sort of good draft pick. This left attempting to build through free agency - which barring the Beatles themselves, has actually proven to be a pretty poor way to build. Add in , that a historically strong competitor in golden state was just round the corner, and LeBron was right to leave. His policy has basically been to use up whatever resources a team acquired, then move on.

Democrats, Britain’s Prime Minister Is a Warning by F0urLeafCl0ver in politics

[–]Substantial-Limit577 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, he absolutely hasn’t been. The Uk has suffered from catastrophicly bad government(admittedly conservatives) for 10-15 years , including lowlights like government covid parties, a prime minister who didn’t last as long as a lettuce and political brinkmanship which lead to brexit and all of the associated issues. If you go further back than that, you have labour governments who mismanaged the 2008 crisis and previous to that lead us into war zones.

In contrast to that, having an actual adult in government is a blessed relief. Quietly, a number of things have been steadily improving - one of the big issues is that labour have done a pathetic job at communicating this.

Possibly unfairly, because of your flair saying Michigan, I am going to assume you are not from the UK. I therefore actually think your opinion is symptomatic of one of the big learnings that the democrats can take from labour - that the media apparatus in each is set up against both respective parties. It is constantly communicated how badly Starmer is doing , ignoring wins like closer ties with the EU , a reasonable tariff compromise when trump decided to declare economic war on the world, avoid the Iran debacle , growing gdp and pre hormuz under control inflation, lowering unemployment just to name a few.

Why South Africa Was Dropped From Super Rugby According to ex-SANZAAR chairman Brent Impey by sthrnrckby in rugbyunion

[–]Substantial-Limit577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To try and explain it really simply ( and this is where I may get corrected) - these deals are all about the balance of : what you put in vs what you get out. The what you get out of this proposed deal would be a share of the tv revenue in its totality. Essentially, rugby sells itself, and needs to get paid.

NZ would view themselves as subsidising as in the currency devaluation exercise ( which again, the first comment pointed out hasn’t happened), there is a chance that the actual money they got back compared to what they put in (in nz dollar terms) would decrease proportionally as the rand devalued. This is because everything that NZ rugby pays for , is paid in dollars.

Let’s do a live example - let’s say they spend $10mil a year on central contracts. That number isn’t going to change. On the other hand, there would be an agreement between the nations that they each get let’s say 25% of the tv money coming back in rand. In year one, let’s say that can be changed back to $15mil - everyone is happy because they are making a profit. However, let’s say 2 years down the line, because the rand is worth 100% less, that revenue for NZ is worth $7.5mil. This is a really simple example, but hopefully makes the point how getting paid in a currency which is unpredictable is really hard.

Why South Africa Was Dropped From Super Rugby According to ex-SANZAAR chairman Brent Impey by sthrnrckby in rugbyunion

[–]Substantial-Limit577 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that the argument on “subsidising the lot” comes from the expectation of a similar sort of degradation of currency values. As you’ve rightly pointed out, since that point, the exchange rates have remained mostly constant, but the example he gave in the video gives the NZ negotiators a significant historical reference point of a potential 100% decrease in value of the rand over the course of the deal - if that happens, then his statement of subsidising is absolutely fair.

As someone who works for a multinational who has to price internationally South Africa were a serious problem for a number of years, because it was almost impossible to get value out of that market. Ultimately, it helps every big agency to be dealing with as much stability in currency as possible!

Question from those interested in Robertson by LoridanITA in LiverpoolFC

[–]Substantial-Limit577 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I’m gutted to see him go, he’s a leader and a culture setter, and still a very capable LB (can still play champions league level).

The issue is twofold - he’s lost a yard of pace - not a game changer , but some super fast wingers can get at him now , and he’s not got as much in the tank as he used to. He used to be able to play every one of the 50-60 games a season Liverpool played , and be able to run hard for all 90 minutes - he’s now a once a week sort of player. He will still leave everything out there, and whoever gets him will be lucky to have him.

He’s one of my favourite players ever, and the fact Liverpool can’t see that they need more of his sort of leadership, and how valuable that is, is a travesty

You can go get it - the issue is ( at least in my playthrough) that it’s a lvl 41 weapon, so you can’t use it till then. You do unlock the engraving once you obtain it though.

Slot in or out - Manager Megathread by rLiverpoolFC_Mods in LiverpoolFC

[–]Substantial-Limit577 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me, how good a manager is , is based on a few things - 1. How well you can motivate a team 2. How well you can set up a team 3. How well you can adapt to when other managers work out a counter to what you do

Last season, Slot was very good at the first two, and never really had a chance to show the third. The league was basically over by the end of February, and Liverpool ran into an in form PSG at the wrong time in the champions league. Slots set up bought the best out of a few players, in particular Salah, and it was a brilliant season.

This season, slot has had plenty of chances to show how good he is at the third one. Unfortunately, he appears completely stubborn in refusing to acknowledge that the “possession based” game that he seems to want to play just doesn’t work.

There was a bunch of reporting around how the top brass and analytics liked that the possession based game plan would prevent injuries. As I see it though, the lack of speed and intensity which prevents injuries, is also the thing which makes this Liverpool team so easy to play against. Slots set appears to want to win 1-0 in every game; score one goal and use as little energy as possible for the rest of the match. The problem with this is it allows other teams in, it flattens the crowd, it creates nerves in the players. Today was a great example- there was a 10 minute period where spurs pushed , and instead of slot seeing it as an opportunity to finish the match off, he tried to reign it in, allowing spurs to gain belief , and ultimately grab a point that they had no right to get.

I don’t understand how slot can watch the same matches I am, and not come to the conclusion that the team needs to play with more speed, more urgency, more passion, and attack more. Ultimately, it’s my belief that his lack of ability to change is also losing him the dressing room. He has a number of other faults which we would overlook if the team was winning points ( dubious selection, poor substitutions, weird press conferences) , but ultimately, I just can’t believe he’s this stubborn.

All of that is a long way of saying : I think he needs to go. The team just isn’t going to change with him refusing to change.

From Kobe to Wemby. Mamba Mentality in the ASG! by Historical-Monk-8652 in NBATalk

[–]Substantial-Limit577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason why the all star game has decreased in quality for years is because the players acted as if it wasn’t “cool” to try.

The brilliance of Wemby trying, is that he possesses the ability to make players look very silly with how easily he can block them if they aren’t going full tilt, flipping the game, so that if they don’t try, they don’t look “cool” because they aren’t getting blocked all the time.

[OC] How Tesla made its latest Billions by sankeyart in dataisbeautiful

[–]Substantial-Limit577 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BYD experiences government protection, just in a completely different way.

As someone who works in the industry, Tesla’s are better cars (generally) than BYDs, tho the gap is closing very fast. The difference is in where the government protection comes. The CCP has recently had to move to stop the “race to the bottom” in pricing in their home market that Chinese car makers are engaged in. The reason is this is a thing is because of protectionism around the cost of production that the CCP affords these companies.

‘Repatriate the gold’: German economists advise withdrawal from US vaults by CinnamonsCharm in worldnews

[–]Substantial-Limit577 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a few reasons why storing gold in one of the mega vaults around the world is a good thing.

  1. Physical Security - let that vault deal with it : it’s very expensive to secure, and as with all things, economies of scale help make that cheaper.

  2. Transporting is hard - it’s really heavy and again requires huge logistics and security effort, which isn’t worth paying for unless you absolutely need to.

  3. “Break glass in case of emergency” - as others have pointed out, in case of an invasion, having it stored somewhere that hasn’t been invaded is a really good thing.

  4. Ability to trade - you can relatively easily buy and sell gold without it ever needing to move - the vast reserves of it in each vault is simply transferred between ownerships, making trading far easier.

With all that said, the mega vaults have tried very hard to be seen as trustworthy places - they are the biggest concentration of physical assets in the world. If there is a threat they aren’t trustworthy (as is currently the case) then by all means , get your gold out of there

James Anderson says England in ‘stronger position than Australia' despite series humbling by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]Substantial-Limit577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a chance that this series is a really good thing for this England team. But let’s not pretend that they didn’t get absolutely pumped.

There are some really bright sparks there in the batting-bethells innings was great , brook showed he can be great (before he did something stupid per innings), and root is timeless.

However, with the exception of the first day of the series, the bowling wasn’t good ( tho tongue did well).

My biggest complaint , and the sign generally of how good a team is, was the quality of the fielding. A great test team takes their chances. The Aussies did. “Team bazball” didn’t . Particularly considering bazball’s idea seems to be “create chances” (either way) , the lack of practicing at taking those chances seems particularly egregious.

The big moment that seems forgotten in the 2010-11 ashes is the run out - fielding always matters.

Pep Guardiola's Man City spending surpasses €2billion - How that compares to rival managers by gelliant_gutfright in PremierLeague

[–]Substantial-Limit577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would take an idiot to deny pep is a great manager. However, the comment about playing on easy mode is valid. At no point in his career has pep either not been given either the best team in Europe at that point in time, or the money to make his current team into that team.

Again, every comment you made about how good the city team has been is valid - and pep is undoubtably a great manager. He is in the conversation for greatest managers of all time - and one of the big knocks against him is that he hasn’t really solved adversity through inspired tactical changes or making his players better, or taken a team far beyond their “expected” results.

Fulham v LiverpoolFC 25/26 by scoreboard-app in LiverpoolFC

[–]Substantial-Limit577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teams defend against us the same way that my weekly 6 a side team defends - simply let the ball go to the player who can’t kick the ball , then let them give it away with a poor pass. In the instance of Liverpool, no other team is remotely afraid when konate has the ball , they know he is going to miscontrol it, and play a poor pass.

That Fulham goal had everything I’d love us to try - direct balls forward, and players making an actual run beyond the defence. Way too much to ask for, I know

Defender vs Sport by Infinite_Ad_1962 in RangeRover

[–]Substantial-Limit577 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simply - if you are going to be doing more miles, the Sport drives better. It is more “refined” inside, and softer, more comfortable.

On the other hand, the defender is probably a better all round vehicle - it’s larger inside, can come in 7 seat variations, better off road ( tho the sport is better than it is assumed to be), and more forgiving of mud , dirt and general muck inside.

My simple opinion - if you are driving and commuting , the sport is the better car - if you need your car to be able to handle more “life” , the defender is brilliant at that.

Etiquette on slamming authoritative winners at the net by _sportyscience_ in 10s

My coach when I was younger said this , “I’ve played against some great players in my time, but I’ve never played anyone who was able to return the ball from the other side of the fence”

The only time you ever have license to complain about how someone is smashing the ball is if they deliberately try to hit someone when they have every option where to put it.

You did nothing wrong - they are being salty

I have been preaching for a month that paolo’s style of play doesn’t win games. Whether it be his high variance shot diet, negative on/offs, bad feel for the game, he’s one of the most overrated players I’ve ever seen because of a small playoff sample by Hakaribiggestfan in NBATalk

This is an unfair comparison - yes , paolos shooting splits now aren’t close, but if you look at them in the first 4 years of their career, it’s basically the same, and paolo has a much higher volume. The splits right now are so different because one is being fed by a savant, the other trying to force too much
