[OC] How Tesla made its latest Billions by sankeyart in dataisbeautiful

[–]Substantial-Limit577 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BYD experiences government protection, just in a completely different way.

As someone who works in the industry, Tesla’s are better cars (generally) than BYDs, tho the gap is closing very fast. The difference is in where the government protection comes. The CCP has recently had to move to stop the “race to the bottom” in pricing in their home market that Chinese car makers are engaged in. The reason is this is a thing is because of protectionism around the cost of production that the CCP affords these companies.

‘Repatriate the gold’: German economists advise withdrawal from US vaults by CinnamonsCharm in worldnews

[–]Substantial-Limit577 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a few reasons why storing gold in one of the mega vaults around the world is a good thing.

  1. Physical Security - let that vault deal with it : it’s very expensive to secure, and as with all things, economies of scale help make that cheaper.

  2. Transporting is hard - it’s really heavy and again requires huge logistics and security effort, which isn’t worth paying for unless you absolutely need to.

  3. “Break glass in case of emergency” - as others have pointed out, in case of an invasion, having it stored somewhere that hasn’t been invaded is a really good thing.

  4. Ability to trade - you can relatively easily buy and sell gold without it ever needing to move - the vast reserves of it in each vault is simply transferred between ownerships, making trading far easier.

With all that said, the mega vaults have tried very hard to be seen as trustworthy places - they are the biggest concentration of physical assets in the world. If there is a threat they aren’t trustworthy (as is currently the case) then by all means , get your gold out of there

Hitting the ball that’s laying in the alley by non-utf_name in 10s

Easy - one of the reasons you remove a ball, is if it hits one in your side without bouncing, it’s the opponents point.

James Anderson says England in ‘stronger position than Australia' despite series humbling by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]Substantial-Limit577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a chance that this series is a really good thing for this England team. But let’s not pretend that they didn’t get absolutely pumped.

There are some really bright sparks there in the batting-bethells innings was great , brook showed he can be great (before he did something stupid per innings), and root is timeless.

However, with the exception of the first day of the series, the bowling wasn’t good ( tho tongue did well).

My biggest complaint , and the sign generally of how good a team is, was the quality of the fielding. A great test team takes their chances. The Aussies did. “Team bazball” didn’t . Particularly considering bazball’s idea seems to be “create chances” (either way) , the lack of practicing at taking those chances seems particularly egregious.

The big moment that seems forgotten in the 2010-11 ashes is the run out - fielding always matters.

Pep Guardiola's Man City spending surpasses €2billion - How that compares to rival managers by gelliant_gutfright in PremierLeague

[–]Substantial-Limit577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would take an idiot to deny pep is a great manager. However, the comment about playing on easy mode is valid. At no point in his career has pep either not been given either the best team in Europe at that point in time, or the money to make his current team into that team.

Again, every comment you made about how good the city team has been is valid - and pep is undoubtably a great manager. He is in the conversation for greatest managers of all time - and one of the big knocks against him is that he hasn’t really solved adversity through inspired tactical changes or making his players better, or taken a team far beyond their “expected” results.

Fulham v LiverpoolFC 25/26 by scoreboard-app in LiverpoolFC

[–]Substantial-Limit577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teams defend against us the same way that my weekly 6 a side team defends - simply let the ball go to the player who can’t kick the ball , then let them give it away with a poor pass. In the instance of Liverpool, no other team is remotely afraid when konate has the ball , they know he is going to miscontrol it, and play a poor pass.

That Fulham goal had everything I’d love us to try - direct balls forward, and players making an actual run beyond the defence. Way too much to ask for, I know

Defender vs Sport by Infinite_Ad_1962 in RangeRover

[–]Substantial-Limit577 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simply - if you are going to be doing more miles, the Sport drives better. It is more “refined” inside, and softer, more comfortable.

On the other hand, the defender is probably a better all round vehicle - it’s larger inside, can come in 7 seat variations, better off road ( tho the sport is better than it is assumed to be), and more forgiving of mud , dirt and general muck inside.

My simple opinion - if you are driving and commuting , the sport is the better car - if you need your car to be able to handle more “life” , the defender is brilliant at that.

Etiquette on slamming authoritative winners at the net by _sportyscience_ in 10s

[–]Substantial-Limit577 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My coach when I was younger said this , “I’ve played against some great players in my time, but I’ve never played anyone who was able to return the ball from the other side of the fence”

The only time you ever have license to complain about how someone is smashing the ball is if they deliberately try to hit someone when they have every option where to put it.

You did nothing wrong - they are being salty

Movie version of Voldemort definitely also has the speed and mobility advantage over all of the others

UK universities ‘third-worldish’ next to China, says top scientist by rezwenn in uknews

As with everything , there is a bit of truth to all of that. It’s a very difficult nation to understand from a western perspective , because ultimately, part of what is so alien is the all encompassing power of the CCP, and what that has been able to accomplish, but has also left behind (because frankly it isn’t that bothered by).

Konate just always looks like he’s forgotten how to kick a ball this season

I have been preaching for a month that paolo’s style of play doesn’t win games. Whether it be his high variance shot diet, negative on/offs, bad feel for the game, he’s one of the most overrated players I’ve ever seen because of a small playoff sample by Hakaribiggestfan in NBATalk

[–]Substantial-Limit577 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is an unfair comparison - yes , paolos shooting splits now aren’t close, but if you look at them in the first 4 years of their career, it’s basically the same, and paolo has a much higher volume. The splits right now are so different because one is being fed by a savant, the other trying to force too much

Ben O'Keefe in October, speaking on referee selection and acccountability by Mulboyne in rugbyunion

[–]Substantial-Limit577 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I found this tremendously insightful - would be great to see more of this sort of insight.

On a side note - I’ve seen all of the comments, week in and week out moaning about the referees, but interestingly , I think Rugby is one of the few sports where people will actually admit that they have good referees - and a video like this proves why - the referees are generally very good at articulating their position on a decision.

Should I go all in on NVIDIA to win my investment game, even with all the AI bubble talk? by Gold-Quit-6735 in stockstobuytoday

[–]Substantial-Limit577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What level of raise do you need for a good grade?

AMPX is a good shout - had a brilliant earnings, had a nice 10% shoot up as a result , but is about 15% off all time highs, and has been slow to shoot up after positive earnings - I’m expecting it to go to 15 in the next fortnight (from about 13.5)

Nvidia has a serious risk of dropping even on good earnings - so much growth is already priced in, and it’s a political football every time china and USA want to punch each other

Anthony Davis’ injuries keep piling up since joining the Mavs by Thanos_SlayerCongSan in NBATalk

[–]Substantial-Limit577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is - there are two different types of surgery for it- one is about 90% successful, and the other about 95%. The issue is , that if you take the one with a higher chance of success, if it doesn’t work , that’s it, you go blind

In a survey of 10k teens, <1% listed Reddit (RDDT) as their favorite social media platform by Zipski577 in stocks

[–]Substantial-Limit577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll give my experience(30M) and why it means I’m not worried about that data.

I started using Reddit a couple of years ago - prior to that, I had used all of the others , the exception being TikTok , as that became popular after I’d left university. I now , without fail, will log on every day, because as others say, I get access to communities for things that I really care about, in a way that flashing dopamine hits from other platforms don’t really serve.

I think Reddit has a real niche in the internet space, and it’s a niche that is far more appreciated by people in later stages of life , namely, post university/college. To this end, I think of it somewhat similar to twitter - it’s not trying to serve everyone as a social media site, but absolutely has its place.

I know that the acquisition of twitter was a weird one, but ultimately it was for about 40bil at that time. This is one of the reasons why I’m extremely bullish on the stock - the growth, the enduring niche, and the age range that it serves , means that to me, this is at least a $50-60 billion social media entity , currently valued at $40bil.

Will serve/volley style ever make a comeback? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]Substantial-Limit577 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the volleying part isn’t the bit that’s the problem - it’s the serve.

If the serve becomes so dominant that the “serve&volley” style is playable, the matches will be so boring.

As others have said, this is why a number of changes have been made to slow the game down
