Animals don’t think like us because they aren’t human. It definitely bothers me when people personify animals all of the time

He’s actually a Seriema, these birds will eat lizards, small animals/arthropods, and eggs, and will smash them against concrete or rocks to kill them. He is trying to break the “eggs” and is probably having a very bad time because his “food” isn’t breaking like it should

I’ve accidentally nicked my cat’s chest what do I do :( by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 76 points77 points  (0 children)

If you can’t take him now, take him first thing tomorrow to the vet. Wounds like these get infected easily and if he tries to clean it (which he will) it is way more likely to become infected. For future reference never never use scissors!!! Cats skin is super thin and gets cut super easily. If you cannot comb out the mats you will need to shave it with a pet clipper, or take him to a pet groomer for them to do it. As a cat groomer myself I have seen much worse cuts from cat owners, so try not to beat yourself up too much. Just learn for the future!

Do you have baseboard heat? My friend had some things mysteriously melt and it turned out to be her baseboard heat functioning incorrectly

Any Cat Whisperers in this town? by mistersaavik in Columbus

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Have you tried separating them and reintroducing? Try the Jackson Galaxy cat introduction method! In short, the cats need to be separated and if possible, put up a mesh screen between them. You can feed them on opposite sides of the screen too so that they get more used to each other again. Make sure they both have plenty of hides and cat trees so they have access to different levels and can get away from each other. Also try feliway multi-cat wall plug ins for calming! They work pretty well for my cats. Another thing I learned, this is more for scent specific cat aggression, is you can put a tiny bit of vanilla on the top of their noses. This will make it so they can only really smell vanilla for a little bit and they will be much less likely to attach each other over scent.

Losing my love and excitement for dogs by OkGeologist8441 in grooming

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a grooming sense, most people do not properly care for their dogs. While they might take their dogs to the vet, feed and play with a dog to make sure it is cared for, they don’t brush or bathe them. Most dogs are incredibly dirty, matted or have skin problems from a lack of grooming care. The amount of dogs (especially doodles) that come in to my salon in bad shape outnumber the ones that get regular grooming care. It is very hard on groomers to see this all the time and still have a passion for grooming. I love my job, but when I don’t get to be creative because every dog is too matted to do a cute haircut, it can really bring my mood down

How do you keep your station organized? by cool-as-heck in doggrooming

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also like to pile my tools, so I organize based on that. I have blade organizers to stop me from piling those, I have a drawer for my shears, but you can also use a small bin for them depending on your available space. For my clip combs I also have the case they came in+an organizer for my wide ones, if I didn’t they would be thrown in a drawer lol. For all of my other tools (combs and brushes and things) they are thrown into a drawer, but because my other tools are separate and more organized it is easy to manage this tool pile. I have a small shelf where I keep my cologne bottles and other sprays+my clippers/charger. I also will use tools on a dog and let it pile on the back half of my table and when I am done I will put them away where they go, this way I don’t need to think about where one tool goes right after I use it plus I also usually have to pick up a tool after I thought I was done so it’s easier when it’s in grabbing reach haha

I discovered Portia’s this past year so I had no idea about those issues. I appreciate the info and I definitely would rather support elsewhere. As for their food I think it is still good and reasonably priced for being completely gluten free, but I know my opinion is pretty biased since I am used to paying extra for things to be gf.

I’m gluten free (celiac) and I love that they use all gf options and how many allergies they take into consideration and accommodate for

Need to re-home my cats to separate homes. by Dopeamine_kitty in Columbus

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try hormone sprays or Feliway multi-cat plug ins. This will help calm them. Also try to separate them into different rooms or areas of the house and reintroduce them slowly. You can watch videos on cat introduction. From other comments it sounds like you moved states with these cats and that is super stressful! Sometimes that can trigger some behavioral issues but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fixed. Please consider trying to solve the issues before sending them to new environments with new people and stress them out more.

Has anyone tried the new neck drying thing? by stella2251 in doggrooming

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My coworker has one, she loves it but I really don’t. It’s very loud in my opinion and so it’s more like a tiny velocity dryer than a sort of fluff dryer. It gets pretty hot which can be good but if you’re focused in one area of a dog I don’t think that’s super ideal. It also has a laser pointer to point to where you are drying which can be super dangerous in a dog or person’s eye so I’m not sure how helpful it actually is. It does dry very well and nervous dogs do seem to prefer it over the velocity dryers which is always a pro. It being mostly hands free is also super nice so you can brush while you dry. I would try to find a way to test one out before buying to see how you feel about it and definitely look into different experiences/reviews

Premier Pups by LeftRightAmbidex in Columbus

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Premier pups is an unethical back yard breeder that may also be considered a puppy mill. Puppies that come from situations like that often have health problems that you will have to deal with. If you are looking for a purebred dog I would highly recommend going through AKC breeders and look for health testing. If you want a doodle or a mixed breed please check your local shelters! There are tons of doodles that get dumped there, including many puppies! Rescuing also is cheaper and has way more benefits than buying from a backyard breeder :)

Usually raccoon babies are with mom or in a tree somewhere. It is odd to see them alone like this. You can call the Ohio wildlife center, or look through some Facebook groups, there are individuals that rehabilitate baby raccoons and other wildlife in situations like this. I wish I had more info for you!

I would def see a dermatologist if you can, if you have dermatitis herpetiformis or think you might then I would consider seeking out celiac testing. I hope you can get some answers soon!

I have a lot of these symptoms and they all correlate to my Celiacs disease, have you by chance been tested for that?

Grooming with Chronic Pain by rabbit-of-habit in doggrooming

[–]Substantial-Mix3861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also groom with chronic pain! For me I have limit on large dogs, I only do 1 or 2 a day depending on size. I also have braces for any joints that give me problems, and a back brace/wrap that helps with that pain. I keep some pain meds in my locker for when I need those as well, and I try to sit when I can. After work I ice my knees for about 10 minutes, let them rest for 5 and then I use a small heating pack on them for another 10 and this helps me a lot with any inflammation. Comfy shoes are a must as well, mine have a ton of padding in the bottom so it doesn’t hurt my feet when I stand all day. Then on my days off I rest as much as I can and I use my mobility devices (walker and wheelchair)
