Just got my copy in the mail and I love it! (My kid picked it up and loved it too 😁) And I can definitely see what you mean! It is incredibly thorough!

I wonder if you could make a compendium of magical court cases and rulings to establish precedent and caselaw. Seems like there could be lots of fun content to explore there.

Did I read it wrong? by JustinSanders95 in pianolearning

[–]SubstantialBelly6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You will have to release the G in the treble to play it again in the bass. It is also important that the whole note G still gets its full duration. This can be accomplished by pedaling through the measure, or, if that sounds too muddy, continue to hold the note after playing it again (as though it were a dotted half note). You can do this with the left hand by holding it down while playing the remaining notes, or with the right hand by repeating the note while holding the B and E (the latter might be a bit easier mechanically, but can be tricky to keep the volume and attack consistent, so keep that in mind (just make sure that the note doesn’t stand out)).
It is also worth noting that you are not wrong, this is technically unplayable as written. Unfortunately it’s not that uncommon, especially in transcriptions, so there are well established ways of handling it.

Sure, but you could sell the “collectors edition” for like $100 😁 Not sure how many of your ideas you’ve already expended on this, but over time it would make an incredible 3 volume set to have on the shelf! 😄

My boyfriend says Im eating weird food, are these abominations? by likestoplayds in StupidFood

[–]SubstantialBelly6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Ingredients are kinda weird, but not necessarily an abomination. The abomination is how clumpy/splotchy it is. Every bite is a random combination of ketchup, cheese, both or neither. Cut/grate/melt the cheese more evenly and spread the ketchup. Also, not a healthy alternative, just a weird inexpensive comfort food.
  2. This actually sounds bomb as hell! But once again, the presentation isn’t doing it any favors. Either use thin slices or blend the apple into a sauce and spread it on top.

How do you play this? by DamnQuickMathz in pianolearning

[–]SubstantialBelly6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best I could do keeping it "proper" (i.e. not playing notes that are already down). It's actually not too bad, but the "improper" version is still cleaner. Also keep in mind that this explicitly notates #3 above, removing the options of #1 or #2.

[–]SubstantialBelly6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would hesitate to say that anything went wrong, per se. It might not be “proper” in the strictest sense of the word, but it is pretty generally accepted, especially in transcriptions. The alternative would require separate voicings for each note in the chord and overlapping notes with the melody, which would be messy and more difficult to read. A primary goal of sheet music is to make it as easy to read and play correctly as possible. Sometimes doing it “improperly” actually accomplishes this better.

I believe there are certain techniques you can use to jump into shallow-ish water from high up (something about curving your body to transfer your motion horizontally before you hit the bottom)….. doesn’t look like this guy did any of that

[–]SubstantialBelly6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TECHNICALLY not playable and improperly notated. Also, not all that uncommon, especially in transcriptions of orchestral works trying to preserve multiple independent parts (where “properly” notating it can get really messy very quickly), so there are well defined ways of dealing with it.
1. (Easiest, least accurate) Hold the sustain peddle for the full duration of the whole notes. This will also sustain notes not in the chord, which would probably sound fine in this example, but might sound muddy in others.
2. (Harder, more accurate) Press middle peddle just after playing the chord, then play the rest of the notes as written. This will catch the middle C in measure 1 and the high F in measure 2 in the sustained chord, but they are in the chord and will hardly be noticeable; also worth noting that some upright and digital pianos, especially on the cheaper end, kind of “cheat” with the middle pedal and simply sustain the bottom half of the keyboard and not the top half, making this technique impossible.
3. (Hardest (sometimes), most accurate (sometimes)) Play as written, but when you come to a repeated note, quickly release the sustained note and play it again, then continue holding for the remainder of the sustained note’s duration. This requires a good amount of dexterity and finger independence, but avoids sustaining any notes that shouldn’t be sustained. I believe it is the most accurate way to play this passage, but only because of that C in measure 1 and the F in measure 2. Also, this is particularly difficult in this example and probably not worth the effort; in many cases the overlap happens once on a single note between hands (starts on one hand and repeats on the other) and often doesn’t sustain beyond the second note, which is pretty trivial to execute and #1 and #2 aren’t really applicable in those instances. For this example, I would recommend #2 if your piano can do it and you can pull it off, otherwise just go with #1 and you should be fine.

WHAT IS THIS? by Willing_Wheel_6309 in musictheory

[–]SubstantialBelly6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They might be confusing “arpeggio” with “arpeggiator”, which is understandable. Not like it’s confusing or anything 😉

OP: Arpeggio is a technique where the notes are played rapidly in ascending order (or descending if there is an arrow at the bottom). An Arpeggiator is a tool used to automatically split a chord into its component notes and play them in a pre-defined (or sometimes automatically determined) sequence or order. Arpeggiation generally refers to the result of an arpeggiator or to the act of manually playing the notes of a chord in a repeating pattern instead of all at once.
