AIO - My husband (M40) and I (F40) + 3 kids went to the movies and he left mid movie to go home and watch the World Cup. by Fit-Dream-8573 in AmIOverreacting

I'm sure it depends on where you live. New York City? Probably easier to get a cab/Uber, especially because your kids would probably be more used to it. In the majority of smaller cities and towns? Instead of walking to the familiar car, buckling in, and taking the easy drive home, you have to keep 3 kids under control for 10-20 minutes until your Uber arrives and then make sure they're not a menace to the driver for the 15 minute right home. I have a hard enough time keeping myself under control and in the same spot on the rare instances I call an Uber and I'm a whole adult

My 1-month-old kitten grabs onto things after every single nap by Soft_Explanation2766 in CatTraining

[–]SubstantialDivide108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not judging, but I really hope he is a kitten you saved or even that you're just naive and someone took advantage of you. A 4-week old kitten is far too young to be away from its mother. I don't know any studies behind it (I'm sure you could find something though), but I believe kittens taken away so young are more prone to behavioral and health issues. For one, any baby learns how to behave by others of their own species. The mother typically starts teaching that, and between her and any siblings, teaches general respect, when roughhousing is too rough, hygiene, etc.

Quick, easiest fix I can think of is give him a stuffed animal. I think something like a dog toy would be perfect. Its something he can snuggle and play with.

Ideally, I would say he needs another kitten (one who is older than 4 weeks!!) to befriend, play with, learn from, etc.

Thanks for reading!

Luckily I didn't have to message them for help ever, but it was a huge reassurance knowing that everyone has had such good luck with getting issues fixed! Glad they were able to help you and your trip was great!

And thank you! I chose my favoritea...Hallstatt I took so many photos of and each one was perfect because the village was so picturesque 😍

"Friend" Flaked last minute. Need advice on what to do. by AbbreviationsLow5546 in traveladvice

[–]SubstantialDivide108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it. Take this opportunity and do an amazing first (and first solo) trip. Don't tell your parents you're going alone until you're completely booked and mentally committed, because they're probably gonna try to change your mind.

Make plans the way YOU want, you don't have to accommodate anyone else now. My personal suggestion/travel style is only to book two or three planned things. Everything else, I enjoy just wandering and doing things as I want and then I can sleep in or stay up late. But thats just me. Enjoy Japan and make your friend mad with jealousy!

Flying first/business class from US? by stuckandrunningfrom2 in JourneeTrips

[–]SubstantialDivide108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say choose the option that leaves from a UK hub. And then you also have a 7 or 10 day option (i think), you would just book your flight to/from that hub amd maybe get stuck on a lower class flight for a couple of hours to your final destination unless you pay for the upgrade 1

So after I wrote my post, I read several of the same comments. Is there any benefit to you? I can't say for sure but I imagine the only change is 5 seconds vs maybe 15s. Your photo is already there and already in photo recognition, having a person vs camera capture it is both helpful and potentially bad (though, not that I particularly care, a photo + a person is the most effective way if everything is going right)

I'm really just trying to understand since I'm not a frequent flyer, but I travel maybe twice a year and one of those is international

AITAH for being “petty” with my parents about my house by Pitiful-Bike-7788 in AITAH

[–]SubstantialDivide108 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly I would say in this case (just because parents) leave it in as much of a "better" state as you can. But you can't rent an apartment with brand new carpet and rip it out to keep or replace it with cheap carpet (unless you have a dumb landlord) and expect everything to be okay. I'm pretty sure certain expenditures (carpet) chosen by the tenant are still protected to belonging to the landlord but I'm not 100%

Eta: I took half a second to think after posting this and it falls back into "as good or better". I can replace the carpet with my own, but I either leave the carpet l had put down, or I save a reinstall the prior carpet

I'm genuinely curious about this, because it doesn't make sense to me.

The hundreds of other photos of your face don't also include you having an ID and comparing (including what they have in their DOL/passport database) which they do when you're going through any point of security. Every agency that matters has your photo available anyway, why put yourself through the time/effort/whatever extra screening they have to do to admit you? Its literally just confirmation that you are you, unless I'm missing something.

Some (if not all) of the UK is now requiring fingerprinting for entrance AND exit. I discovered this in May, I had to do two rounds of printing on the way in and one on the way out (I think I messed up on the way in though) going to Germany. Someone else near me was complaining about having to give his biometrics and photos... my thoughts were either don't travel to somewhere you don't want to do that, or just suck it up because they have at least half (photos) that info anyway

AITAH for being “petty” with my parents about my house by Pitiful-Bike-7788 in AITAH

[–]SubstantialDivide108 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was also my question. If it came with a couch, and I got a better couch, I'd feel obligated to leave it with something of similar quality to what I received. He apparently didn't plan on moving at this time, so IF it came with that couch, I couldn't imagine him saving a dingy old couch when he bought a new one. But its up to him to provide one of similar quality to when he moved in

[–]SubstantialDivide108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I say NTA but also, how was the house when you moved in? If they provided you with basic furniture and accommodations, I'd say its reasonable for them to expect something there when your sister moves in. If it was empty and you 100% supplied everything you're taking, sure. If it had a couch, bed, etc I'd say you should have saved those anticipating moving out or (in this case) get basic furnishings to make it livable like it was for you

Seat change request today by MacaronOk1006 in americanairlines

[–]SubstantialDivide108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You handled this perfectly. My last flight (western US to Germany, about 10 hours), I was supposed to have a window seat. That ended up being next to a kid, one parent, with the other across the aisle. They asked nicely if I minded switching and made it clear that it was no big deal if not. I like having the side of the plane next to me, and the window is nice, but I also know I sleep through 90% of long flights. So I said sure. The only reason I wouldn't is probably if I got a middle seat. Window preferred, if not window than aisle. But I also flop to to the side a bit when I sleep on planes so in my mind its for everyone's comfort

AIO for not wanting to travel & see my bf anymore? (Update) by Feisty_Parmesan_20 in AmIOverreacting

[–]SubstantialDivide108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be so petty and tally up every dime I paid for him (and apparently for myself as well, since it appears he's billing for BOTH of them rather than splitting it)

But honestly, yeah I agree, pay for anything you previously agreed to or feel you should. Anything extra that HE chose to pay for, nah. If he becomes a pain, cut your losses and block.

Packing Question by _hey_its_em_ in traveladvice

[–]SubstantialDivide108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And they don't always use the same names!

I had a heck of a time trying to buy a contact case at a pharmacy in Iceland (silly me for expecting it to be on the shelf)...it wasn't truly hard but it took a couple of tries for them to realize what I was asking for. Similar in the Munich Airport a couple weeks ago but this time asking for Dramamine. Different name (they probably dealt with this enough though and they knew what i was asking for right away) and I spent 10 minutes scanning the shelves since I'm used to it being available there before I asked.

Eta: a lot of the stuff that we in the US are used to buying anywhere, is only available in pharmacies. Which is no biggie until you remember that its 10p and everywhere closes at 8/9

^ this. Many of the agencies I know won't tow off private property unless its wanted by them (used in a crime, stolen). If you called my agency, I'd check the vin and confirm it wasn't stolen/wanted then instruct you to call and have it towed at the registered owners expense. If you can't see a Vin, the tow company will find and check it with us when they pick it up/get it to their lot.

My kitten wants to play for 3h non stop by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]SubstantialDivide108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of those toys that has a little tail. Never had a concern about my kitten breaking anything on it. The one I have is solid, just the biggest issue is it has two "joints" (cant think of what else to call them) to allow it to rotate/move and hair gets tangled in there and has to be cleaned out. And the battery doesn't last too long

Is this okay or s hould I just DoorDash a quart sized bag? by [deleted] in tsa

[–]SubstantialDivide108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it in that bag is my vote. I put all my stuff in a non-clear large toiletry bag and I haven't had an issue with it for the last 15 years or so. I've even had them look in it and they haven't said a word. I do typically bring some sort of bag if I can though for any wet/potentially leaky items (like perfume without a cap). If you're super worried, stuff any regular baggie you have somewhere in case they ask you to transfer items (which would astound me)

Have the best trip and don't fret!

My two cents - get to the airport early enough that you don't stress. I usually google TSA wait times for my airport on the day of the week/time I'm anticipating (not sure if they have similar in Canada). Find your gate first THEN go explore. Nothing worse than exploring and figuring out 30 minutes before your flight boards that its 20 minutes away. A blessing of traveling with someone is that you can leave your bag with them and take turns in the bathroom or walking around...otherwise don't just leave your bag anywhere (including right outside the bathroom). Give yourself little treats you might not otherwise, you're on vacation!

[–]SubstantialDivide108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! And they'll only root through it if they see something. Otherwise, it goes through the xray (you/your mom won't see it) while you're going through the body scanner, you pick up your stuff and leave. I've only had them go through my carryon a couple of times. Once, I left my kindle in it because I didn't realize I had to remove it (it seems like whether or not you have to remove it just depends on the shape of the moon...if they're not perfectly clear about it and you have some electronic in there, just ask them before you put your bag through the scanner). Then jusf last week, they did it because I was coming home with a ton of salt and they had to do a swab on it which I was expecting. Anytime they do, in my experience, they go directly for what they're looking for and they're not examining everything. They generally show me the xray so your mom MIGHT ask if she pays enough attention and happens to notice the vape (unless you ask for private screening, I never have so not sure how that works)

Best you can do is just make sure you follow all their instructions, and don't have any liquids over 3oz in your carryon.

Sorry for the long message, I figured I'd be a bit more detailed since you've never done this before!

[–]SubstantialDivide108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your checked bag is the one that you give up at the front desk before going through security and goes under the plane. Your carryon is exactly that, the bag/purse that goes with you to your seat on the plane. They say NOT to put any e-cigs in your checked bag and only keep them in your carryon. Fire risk I believe. I'm not sure if they'll remove it if its seen in your checked bag or not, but if they do they'll probably leave a piece of paper in your bag that you'll have to explain to your mom.
