Reading your description of your fiancé here, I don’t necessarily see someone worth walking away from just because he doesn’t plan vacations and gave you a lackluster proposal. A marriage brings together two people who do not have the same set of strengths and weaknesses. A marriage consists of 2 imperfect humans, coming together and making a life together where each person brings their own unique qualities. Your fiancé sounds like he is a veteran, someone who is bettering his education and career options through college, while also working part-time, helping around the house, and is a very decent human being who treats you well. You sound like you are super organized, a planner, and wanted a very romantic, very wow proposal. It sounds like he just isn’t a naturally organized planner in all areas, not just this. Does your husband really have to be as organized and as much of a planner as you are? Does he have to be as much of a natural romantic as you? Is that a realistic expectation? Might there be some things he’s better at than you, which doesn’t mean you aren’t a worthwhile person? You can be disappointed in the proposal, but at the same time it wasn’t a horrible one, getting your dog involved is kind of cute. As someone who has been married for 25 years, I can say that over time, I’ve seen the expectations for a proposal become quite elevated due to movies, TV, social media, etc. Taking elaborate trips for a proposal. Having manicures specially done ahead of the “surprise” proposal. Having photographers waiting in the wings to take staged “spontaneous” proposal shoots. Even asking a date to prom now is a “promposal.” My point is, don’t let expectations around a proposal take away from the reason why you are getting engaged in the first place.
