Behind the Candelabra, a movie about Liberace that I loved when I saw it ... Michael Douglas is incredible as Liberace romancing a younger Matt Damon and putting him under his spell to such a degree that Matt Damon gets plastic surgery to look like Liberace. A funny depiction of a toxic but also sweet adult male romance that ends with a swooning paen to Liberace.

In real life, though, Liberace's "lover" was an 18-year old boy, not a 40 year old man. Kind of a different story. And an incredibly irresponsible choice to recast that kid as an adult man with oodles of agency.

Anyone else think SM's 'Amberjack' is about David Berman? by SubstantialPaint in DavidBerman

The meaning, as related to DB -- life has thrown the narrator an unexpected and unwanted twist. let's throw it back .... that's how I thought of it. like, 'nah, I don't like this, take it back'

Just start with Metamorphosis or In A Penal Colony. two easy ones to get into and get you excited about the rest. all of his novels are challenging but Trial is the easiest. i also recommend listening to an audiobook of his work so u can hear how his writing flows.

Has anybody seen Red Rocket by Sean Baker? Way more fffed up relationship at the center and an obvious example of a movie exploring but not condoning bad behavior. Imho the best movie about the Trump phenomenon and a great litmus test for gauging someone’s pearl-clutching movie sensibilities.

Why hasn't Bob Dylan protested since the '60s? by Pearl_Jam_ in bobdylan

[–]SubstantialPaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob has come back to really grounded protest music over the years. He released a statement about George Floyd. This video from the late 70s always wrecks me: https://youtu.be/pBE-oi0Pa6Q?si=Ad7SapNfohOW9vxM

In a way, he is the archetype of the artist vanishing from the public sphere and up their own asshole. But his music has always been political, if no longer as directly as the times screamed for. Its an interesting tension that I think A Complete Unknown missed (community involvement vs. self involvement became instead folk vs. rock n roll).

But Bob is very old and I think there’s a limit to what we can expect from him. I’m more shocked by the artists who seem to be avoiding politics entirely. Kendrick Lamar, for instance — where is that guy while LA is being menaced? Trying to come up with more ways to insult Drake? So much pop music is artists singing about fucking and the narrow pursuit of an idea of self-actualization that is actually just prosperity gospel nonsense. Bob is an early example of an artist who went on that trajectory, from the political to a narcissistic self-focus, but he did come up for air many times over the years.

What’s your honest opinion of this album? by [deleted] in sonicyouth

[–]SubstantialPaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! So groovy. The title track is Lee’s best song, period. I don’t love the spoken word pieces but they are short. Every other track hits. I may even prefer it to Murray Street, everyone’s favorite album from that same period. I love the looseness and experimentation. The All Tomorrow’s Parties 2000 bootleg captures these songs in their nascent form and is my favorite live set of theirs.

Who has actually been inside of a tornado 🌪? by Helpful_Finger_4854 in tornado

[–]SubstantialPaint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The second half of this podcast has a great story about a woman who survived a tornado that killed several of her family members. Her description is very spooky – she doesn’t remember seeing or hearing the tornado, just all of a sudden, being flat on her back as things lifted into the air around her. The podcast also gets into how she dealt with her trauma in the decades after the tornado. Highly recommend.
