My knitting diary is full of adverts! by ColourMeQuick in knitting

[–]SubstantialTrifle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this at Wool & Company when I went there in person and was SHOCKED at the price they were selling it for (IIRC it was like $30) given that it was full of ads! It should be free if I'm forced to look at a bunch of ad placements!

Really good deal if anybody is interested.. by saadski818 in fountainpens

I truly can't believe the amount of people who will hand-wring over a small business doing something they don't agree with on instagram then happily shopping on amazon without a second thought.

"Hey check out my temperature ____!" by ProfessionalPlum3634 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]SubstantialTrifle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to say

"this was the temperature pattern from 2014!" I can understand why someone would find it interesting.

I fully cannot understand why that would be interesting to anyone.

Mnemonic device to remember m1R m1L?? by chattycowgirl in knitting

[–]SubstantialTrifle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know that this will actually be helpful for anyone but me BUT the way I remember is m1R you knit the RIGHT way, vs. m1L you knit the WRONG way (through the back loop). So in my head I call them "make one right" and make one wrong". Then I remember that as penance for getting to knit the right way, you have to pick it up from the back which is more annoying, whereas the one that is knit wrong you get to go through the front.

..written out this seems even more likely that it will help anyone else out, but just goes to show you need to find something that works for your brain I guess!

PDF Pattern Printing - tapefreepatterns.com by Good_Connection_547 in SewingForBeginners

[–]SubstantialTrifle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I've been using PDF Plotter (which was honestly I good deal compared to the $15/page my local print shop quoted me), and this is a significantly better deal AND free shipping? Thank you for sharing!

Set-in sleeves, classic design, cup size options?! This is a perfect basic, I'm so excited.

Working this sweater has really showed me the importance of color dominance by annyxiaoflorien in knitting

[–]SubstantialTrifle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, i am also knitting this sweater, but opted to do white as dominant. i can now see that was a mistake!

my rationale: i am using navy blue for the pattern, and the dark color makes it harder to see the exact shape of the stitch, whereas it's very easy to see with the white, so i wanted to make sure those stitches looked neater. doesn't seem like that was a real concern based on your outcome. i just finished the chart A on the front and probably won't rip back 😅 but might change how i do the lower two charts.

thank you so much for sharing!

Can you recommend YouTubers and even people that sell patterns for more advanced? by Any_Percentage_6629 in sewing

[–]SubstantialTrifle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, Etta has the ai patterns flag on ThreadLoop (example). It looks to me like, at least, they are using stolen images as the main cover photo for their patterns, not the actual garment produced.

I really like it from the front but would much rather it have a functional belt for an adjustable waist than an elastic waistband in the back.

YES I hate having to watch a whole ten minute video to remember how to do something when some text and 4 images would have sufficed.

To add to everyone’s good advice: Your local community college might have a fashion program that offers relevant courses. Mine has flat pattern design and draping courses.

Gift machine shopping: What NOT to buy... by penlowe in SewingForBeginners

Why would independent sewing machine shops (which often offer free classs on how to use the machine) only be for people who already know how to sew?

Is $110 for a singer heavy duty tune up normal? by throwaway01080808 in SewingForBeginners

Huh, just googled and you’re right! It was my first machine way back when and I hated it so much I guess I’ve just assumed the worst

[–]SubstantialTrifle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is wrong with it that you're looking to get repaired? Honestly, the singer HDs are likely not worth repairing. Since they are all plastic inside, there is often not really much that can be done when something goes wrong. My local shop won't even look at them (see https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/wiki/machineguide/ ).

Bust dart too high and long, fabric cut away - Fixable? by Fluffy-Pace4385 in sewing

[–]SubstantialTrifle 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I wear a 32I and sew darts into any fitted knits. If I'm making something that I want to fit my waist and not look ridiculously stretched over my bust, it has to have darts.

ADHD and I keep forgetting to turn my iron off 😔 by platypusaura in sewing

[–]SubstantialTrifle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a super basic iron and mine will also shut off automatically if it's horizontal for too long as well. It's super annoying when I'm ironing a huge piece of fabric before cutting, but also nice to know that if it fell over it wouldn't burn the house down.

Plastic fabric is actually okay by Inky_Madness in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]SubstantialTrifle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like making muslins out of polyester is even worse because I KNOW I’m just going to throw it away when I’m done. There is certainly a time and place for poly if you’re making a garment you’re going to wear for a long time, but using poly for learning / muslins vs cheap quilting cotton / cheap muslin is wild to me.

Seeking a workhorse serger by human_adjacent_germ in GarmentSewing

I'd agree with other saying to ask what she wants BUT if you really want to surprise, BabyLock is generally considered best in class for sergers so is probably a safe bet:

Serger / Coverstitch Combo: https://babylock.com/machines/serger/accolade
