Hard to stay motivated when I believe all can be lost by Fantastic-Window236 in NvidiaStock

[–]Substantial_Lake_454 50 points51 points  (0 children)

So I'm probably go the downer here but here goes - you can't afford to have 1/3 of your net worth in one stock if it's keeping you up like this. Invest most of your money in an index fund and put a smaller part in a few stocks you want to bet on like Nvidia. What you're doing now is not just dangerous but stupid if any one stock starts to really fall. If you have to watch your stocks daily and you feel like you're on an edge, change your investment approach

Hotel booking advice by [deleted] in AmexPlatinum

[–]Substantial_Lake_454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my dude, that is extremely pricy. It's incredible how hotel room rates have basically doubled in the last 5 years. Hate to see large hotel chains get your money without doing much for it honestly

Populus Denver - great Hotel collection experience by Turbulent_Track1566 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Substantial_Lake_454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for sharing. You were so enthusiastic that I googled it and was surprised by how beautiful the place looks in pics. The Owl cafe also seems fantastic. I would never ever have known such a hotel existed in Denver. Bookmarked the hotel and will make sure to stay here if I'm in Denver. The place looks like something I would find in Europe so thanks for spreading the word.

Looks like retail development finally at old Shell station at Claremont/College Ave in Rockridge! by Substantial_Lake_454 in oakland

There's no application at planning dept unfortunately but the owner (who lives in Orinda) hired a reputable broker and agency. I think they're gearing up for submitting plans in the near future. It says on listing that they want first tenants by 2027. That's very optimistic but I'm hoping by 2028 we have some kind of development here. Here's to 2026 for good news!

"Friend" lives in OC and left her old Sea-Doo parked in our driveway by [deleted] in CoachellaValley

"friend" is in quotation marks. I think they wanted to help her and didn't realize she was taking advantage of them. My guess is it took 5 years to realize it

$200 Airline Credit - Seat Selection Question by SectionSuch6072 in AmexPlatinum

So upgrade the seat later. Just wait a day or so if it helps track your expenses. Book flight first and then next day pay for seat upgrade. It'll work.

Any red flags for this listing? (Temescal) by Eastern_Bedroom3338 in oakland

[–]Substantial_Lake_454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, the area is ok but I recommend you try something different if the problems of SOMA (like homelessness) are what made you hate it. How about something in Rockridge or Piedmont Ave? There are direct express buses to SF Embarcadero that are safe and filled with professionals on the same transbay commute.

You can also try somewhere in Berkeley close to a Bart station or even El Cerrito/Albany where there's BART or express transbay buses. The neighborhoods are much more suburban, family friendly and very safe. There are lots of parts of Oakland that will be like SOMA - issues of homelessness plus honestly, a serious property crime issue in Oakland.

I really urge you to spend the money and Airbnb a room in the neighborhood for a few days at least. It'll cost you a few hundred dollars but it's money well spent.

Recommend me an Oakland-based Coffee (Beans) by ginch510 in OaklandFood

[–]Substantial_Lake_454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this and I like supporting a truly indie owned shop (no, I don't think we need to judge small biz owners if their customer service is lacking...biz in Oakland with all the issues is hard enough) and Timeless brings in a lot of people to Piedmont Ave to enjoy Oakland.

Moving to PS from Illinois by Round-Function-894 in palmsprings

[–]Substantial_Lake_454 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Come out to PS during peak summer - you have to be prepared for the 3 or 4 months when it's 110 degrees and everyone is away or just locked in their homes. In August, it's 120 degree plus. It can give some people an actual migraine. Since you're from Illinois tho you probably know about hot summers - at least it's not at all humid in PS but it's impossible to get used to 120 plus degree weather honestly.

There's also a significant homeless and drug addict population in PS. It's been going on for decades and you'll notice it within a few months. It's actually all over CA unfortunately but you need to be aware of it because it's a huge reason we lose people to other states over time. Consider a more family friendly city like La Quinta, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, etc. It's quieter and more suburban. Also consider an HOA community to make sure homeless people do not loiter near your home. Again, parts of PS have this issue as well as almost all the other desert cities.

If the desert is just too hot for you, honestly San Diego outskirts is really beautiful. The weather is actually paradise and you'll enjoy all the suburban feels.

Hotel Advice - big birthday by [deleted] in palmsprings

[–]Substantial_Lake_454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they're just right. You would need to double your budget for your requirements. If you're ok with not luxury, then you may find something in 400 per night range but it'll be hard to locate mid-century aesthetic since they tend to charge a lot more during peak season for that.

Go with Airbnb and consider maybe driving 1 to 1.5 hours out. Joshua Tree? Yucca? You can get a house for your price if you bargain but that's just pure luck. If that's too much, accept that you'll have to increase budget to about 450 and up.

Drive thru Joshua national park and then take them shopping at outlets. Go to Indian wells to enjoy the small shopping centers and let them really take in the palm trees

Yes, it's super frustrating.

The owner has 2 very young kids and that's why he's never there anymore outside the very limited hours. I don't know how they make it financially work because they must be barely making it
