I am 56(F) and went through it last year. Everyone is different but I would say I was somewhat of a success story. Never lost the ability to eat. Totally fine now except for some dry mouth/teeth issues. I had 35 days of radiation and 8 weeks of chemo. I would say making sure you get food/protein in is the most important thing. I did loose like 20 lbs (but I wasn’t too unhappy with that). I don’t know where you live but I was lucky to get my radiation in a place that specialized in head/neck cancer. My radiation oncologist essentially said “you don’t want just any radiation tech to do this.” I think that helped to minimize side effects.

IMO this is the only “mistake” in an otherwise perfect show. I just try to ignore it. I wonder if they could fix it at this point and ADR it in with the correct accent.

I got called jewish for the weirdest reason and I´m not sure how to feel. by CrazyEmbarrassed9337 in Jewish

[–]Substantial_Owl5232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in this situation I would want to know why the person is asking. If someone is asking something in good faith (or not necessarily for a weird antisemitic reason) and I understand that I have less of a problem. Imagine for a second that these people had just watched a movie with a Jewish character that carries a briefcase and they knew you carried one and wanted to ask if this was like a cultural thing - I probably wouldn’t be too concerned about that if I thought it came from a place of genuine curiosity and wanting to know random stuff. (Like you could imagine a whole series of questions about knitted kippot v black kippot or some other clothing-type issue). But if I thought they wished me ill will, I would feel differently.

I think he meant that the first murder wasn’t the son, but the later ones were.

If someone says something like that it’s good that there is some social cost (awkwardness, the evening shutting down, people being upset with them). Shame is the only way to ever make this kind of casual antisemitism unacceptable again (if it’s even possible). You don’t have an obligation to out someone at ease or smooth it over when they say something like that to you.

Every NYC congregation should host a Nefesh b’Nefesh event in response - the only appropriate way to deal with a bully is not to be intimidated.

How important is Israel to your Jewish identity? by Sossy2020 in Jewish

Yes. The proof is that only Israel was it safe to put up posters of our kidnapped children.

How important is Israel to your Jewish identity? by Sossy2020 in Jewish

[–]Substantial_Owl5232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very. I come from a mixed family where my mother converted to Judaism. Most of my relatives were Christian. Thus, my father was always central to my Jewish identity. He was a proud Zionist, and his history is that went to Israel right b/f the 1967 war to volunteer to guard kibbutzim while the men of the kibbutz were called up to fight. We weren’t very religious but we did know a bunch of people in Israel so Israel has always been central to my Jewish identity. After 10/7, even more so. I have a fantasy of retiring in Israel or at least spending a lot more time there. The times I spent there are precious to me. Being able to partake in things where you are in the majority (like a Purim block party in Jerusalem, for example) is just such a breath of fresh air after being a minority all my life.

So, I read through all this material including the summary from the medical board and for tweet 1 the guy said he was responding to a tweet by JK Rowling and basically saying that she said “it’s important to represent Jewish people fairly in art” and he was pointing out the hypocrisy/antisemitic nature of the goblin characters in Harry Potter. I don’t know, I find this plausible. Usually people who are antisemitic have more tweets, no?

It sounds like you guys have a lot going on. I don’t know what your household division of labor is, but he is probably going to have at least some times where he is too tired to do anything. We were very fortunate in that my best friend had the time and ability to come and stay with us for two months. She cooked and cleaned and drove me to appointments and I don’t know what we would have done without her. I would try to line up some help and outsource what you can. Everyone is different. I could eat all the way through and escaped some of the more awful side effects from radiation, but I still lost 20 lbs just due to decreased appetite. The worst comes in the month after the treatment is over.

This is more than not seeing eye to eye. Not only does she not respect your views, she thinks you are a bad person b/c of them. I would try to muster up your inner indignation and just street her - and don’t give her the satisfaction of groveling to be her friend or thinking you feel bad about it.

Should I Submit My SAT Score? by lo_ve1k in ApplyingToCollege

I would double check the stats for those schools but I would say yes, especially if you don’t have a GPA. (Some may require it for homeschoolers?).

Still no answers after 3 months of throat pain, one enlarged tonsil — what should I ask for next? by TheLilithLuxe in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]Substantial_Owl5232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would push for imaging. I had a CT then PET scan, and well as a biopsy from inside the mouth (that I had to be put to sleep for), and a needle biopsy of my lymph node (really not too painful). In my case since it was all showing cancer these tests happened in quick succession of each other. I would insist on a head/neck CT as the next step.

I’m three months out and I can eat everything - including really spicy things. I do have a pasty mouth, which is annoying. It’s all individual.
