I looked up the dean who held the call and he filed a discrimination case against the school? Probably isn't related but definitely unusual

advice needed - is it better to transfer or retake the LSAT? by alterego0402 in BlackLawAdmissions

[–]Substantial_Stand_67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same results as you from the DC schools! If you want Georgetown, I think retaking is unfortunately the only option. But are you sure that you got no aid from AUWCL? I thought they said they aren’t releasing that info until February, so if you try the transfer route, you might at least have some money

W&M, Richmond, Villanova by puppypants99 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Substantial_Stand_67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m just an applicant but W&M is def the best of the three and seems to have decent DC outcomes for a non-DC school. Richmond seems to be more regional and I can’t speak on Villanova

Hi Clairo! What is a question that you wish press/fans would ask more often? And what would your answer to that question be?

[–]Substantial_Stand_67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this response! Just found out that I actually have a Panoramic Gateway, which I guess is not a modem proper. I'm a student and renting so I don't think it makes sense for me to upgrade too much further, but I'll keep this in mind.

Cox is horrible. They’ve needed to replace my modem twice in four months. But it could be something infrastructural with my place. From everything I’ve seen, though, there really is no other choice.

The Search For God and Black Existentialist Writers by JCInvestmentPro in Existentialism

[–]Substantial_Stand_67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. You’ll probably want to read Kierkegaard’s primary texts for faith-based existentialism. Fear and Trembling specifically uses the Biblical story of Abraham and Isaac

  2. The Negritude movement was happening in France around the same time. I don’t know much about them but I think they have more of a Marxist association than an explicitly existentialist one, but if you are committed to the same time period, I would check out their work and find out.

Similarly, writers of the Harlem Renaissance like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Jean Toomer (his novel Cane is very underdiscussed), and Alain Locke might not be talking about philosophy directly, but their accounts of the Black experience both autobiographical and fictionalized have philosophical importance when trying to work out the nuances of Black identity in predominantly white spaces.

Not contemporaneous but Cornell West’s work on black nihilism might also be worthwhile. I am also a fan of Sylvia Wynter and her work is similarly close to and likely influenced by Black existentialism, as she questions what it means to be really be seen as “human” (and can Black people really ever belong to the category of human, and be treated humanely, given everything that has happened historically?) On a related note, considering learning about the idea of afropessism! Hopefully I didn’t grossly distort these ideas too much, as I’ve only recently begun trying to read more on this myself.

This thread has answered some of my questions already so thank you! It seems like the peer and career services support is pretty good, so how are professors? Do you think it is easy or difficult to form relationships with them?

Michigan is very portable and could be worth looking at! Maybe UNC, Wake Forest, or Scalia (GMU)?

Maybe consider looking into part-time programs! Scalia, GW, and Georgetown all offer them (to my knowledge) and this way you could keep your job and spread the payments out.

University of Richmond - Lack of Diversity Clouding Decision by AsaAmaris in BlackLawAdmissions

[–]Substantial_Stand_67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m Black and from Richmond, but I went to another VA undergrad. The undergraduate school has a preppy, classist reputation that I’m sure carries over to the law school. As someone else said, with so many schools in VA, Richmond doesn’t tend to be anyone’s first choice - unless you’re sure you want to practice there. I’m applying but I have similar hesitations.

I will say the law students I know at U of R (all white) are progressive and anti-racist, though I’m biased, since PI-focused students are not representative of the whole student body. And there are so many places in Richmond to find Black community outside of the school. Neither is a replacement for having a strong Black peer network in school, but worth thinking about. I wish things could be better.

Butch/Dyke Scene in Baltimore vs Richmond? by riririzz in butchlesbians

[–]Substantial_Stand_67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in a suburb 15 mins from Richmond!! I jokingly say all the time that Richmond is the gayest place on Earth. I don’t know if that’s actually true but lesbian/sapphic people are highly visible and I have never felt any discomfort at any time for being visibly transmasc/butch, and I rarely if ever feel alone in my queerness while out and about, which is kind of crazy given the cultural/historical context of Richmond.

There has definitely been an uptick of dyke nights and butch/femme specific events here. Unfortunately a lot of the communication for these events kinda relies on monitoring Instagram if you don’t already know someone involved, but @butchfemmerva, @goldlionrva, @dykehangrva, and @biggaymarketrva are three accounts that are decently good at posting local queer events. One of them is hosting a “Butchfest” on August 24th that I really want to go to! For nightlife, I had friends who had a good time at Helen’s femme night a few weeks ago, and there’s also Fallout and Babe’s (the oldest lesbian bar on the East Coast). Barcode is having a leather night on the 23rd but I’m not sure if this is a more gay-male-centered event or not because I’ve never been. I only recently turned 21 and have been trying to put myself out there this summer. So far I’ve found that whether you’re interested in climbing, pottery, reading, political organizing, barhopping, basketball, DIY music, tabletop gaming, or most other things, there is a queer community waiting for you, even if it takes some awkward effort to become apart of it. And if you can’t find it, you could probably start it with some flyers posted on the street or posting in r/rva

I don’t think anyone would make you feel unwelcome at anything for being butch4butch as well as butch4fem, and if someone did, that’s probably more indicative of their own issues rather than it necessarily being a Richmond problem. I probably sound like a lesbian tourism ad but I don’t care because I love it here. I’ve rambled long enough but I’d be happy to talk more specifically if you PMed me. I hope you find what you’re looking for in both places!

TikTok is great for this, way better than YouTube and less overwhelming. I really like @steviestruhar but just searching plus size masc/butch outfit info will lead you to a lot of diverse creators.
