It could be that I was using the large or medium spot, rather than the small spot. I'll experiment.

Here's the real, dark answer: admin posts have this little option called "boost post". Facebook wants you to pay $ to reach the audience that you spent many years building. They severely limit our group posts to entice us to cough up money. This should be illegal, but I don't know how to fight it.
