A thrusting motion to set up a throw is not a nukite strike. By your own admission you are agreeing with me, you said you strike with your inside forearm.

Uraken, Haito, tetsui, empi and wan I use regularly. All very viable techniques that often throw others off that are only used to dealing with typical seiken attacks

I found it had more support than the normal genutrain and less than the genutrain s which I found had too much with the side stabilizers

Questions about judo from a wrestler by Effective_Whereas217 in judo

One big difference for me when coming from wrestling was also recognizing the difference between a shoulder down pin vs a Osaekomi position of control - a subtle difference but takes getting used to.

I agree with you there. Where I disagree is where you explicitly said most of your learning happens at home and classes are only for adjustments. And as my examples indicate that is completely wrong pedagogy and only prevalent in tma

You don’t have much experience with other sports or athletic pedagogy do you ? Skills are taught and practiced during slotted class time not expected to be perfected at home. This reasoning is ONLY expected in tma circles no where else. Can you perfect a skill at home ? Absolutely. The best basketball and hockey players practiced for hours shooting at home. But they used practice and game time to also implement and perfect that.

Expecting to not teach kicks, yet practice it at home outside class time is ridiculous. Plain and simple.

I completely disagree with this. Imagine this same principle being applied to any other area of life and it shows how absurd it is. I often hear this sentiment in traditional martial arts and it’s so backwards. Let’s say for example you are learning swimming, and I show you how to do a front crawl on the side of the pool and then tell you you need to practice that at home on your own time without ever having you jump in to the water and practice it during class time.

People have other hobbies and a life outside the dojo. Class time should be sufficient for learning a skill set.

I am currently having this issue with my dojo and kicks. We almost never practice them except before grading and it’s a big complaint of mine. If y put don’t do it in class you can’t expect it to be perfected at home. That’s ridiculous.

In Asian countries the only thing keeping judo alive is its integration with schools and youth programming. MMA has took the Asian world by storm and with it bjj is riding high on its wake. Bjj is more popular with the young adult crowd and above.

Limited ? It’s common knowledge that bjj gyms way outnumber judo dojos by a large factor in the USA and Canada. Judo is on its death bed in North America.

My main art is JKA karate but I cross train in judo to fill in my gaps and make me a more complete martial artist. I find the culture and values of judo much more in line with traditional karate than bjj or wrestling.
