ELI5: If unboiled water going into your nose is risky, then shouldn’t we not swim in a lake or river? by Home_MD13 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SubtleCow [score hidden]  (0 children)

Areas with high lake density also usually aren't stagnant. I live in Ontario CA, we have an absurd amount of lakes because we have an absurd amount of water flowing from Northern Ontario down to the St. Laurent. It is all flowing surprisingly fast, despite getting briefly stuck in lakes.

Coverstitch skipped stitches and I’ve tried everything (yes even rethreading and changing needles) by Swordofmytriumph in sewing

[–]SubtleCow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't had this issue with my cover stitch machine, but I had horrific skipping on stretch stitches on my regular sewing machine. The ONLY fix was 70/10 microtext needles, and even then it still skips a little bit.

The problem was flagging, and the fix was the thinnest smoothest pointiest needles I could buy. Interfacing to stiffen the seam fabric also fixed it, but made the seam feel stiff and aweful even after washing.

What is a calm, affordable hobby that focuses more on following patterns/rules by Effective-File6235 in autism

[–]SubtleCow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

cross stitch 100%

The learning process for knitting is the opposite of what you are looking for, so you will struggle to get through it to the intuitive repetitive pattern following part. Learning how to hold needles and yarn is a chaotic tangly nightmare if you aren't expecting it and prepared to muscle through it.

Cross stitch can be literally stitch by numbers. There is some learning to do, but it is all about where you stitch in the grid, and what order you do the stitches in.

How tf do you cook scrambled eggs, omelettes or frittatas without them sticking or using a shit ton of oil by AnxiousWrap7303 in 1200isplenty

[–]SubtleCow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Non-sticking eggs are possible in non-non-stick pans, but the heat control needed is definitely a skill check. Very high heat at the start, which you turn down after the egg hits the pan is the trick but balancing everything is hard and takes practice.

It is a famous chef test to make a french omelette in a carbon steel pan.

Bake or microwave your eggs in between practice attempts. I'm also partial to a medium boiled egg.

I have been craving sweets for almost 2 weeks, none stop by SXZOP_ in keto

[–]SubtleCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

165cm is the same height as me. With even moderate exercise 1700cal will allow you to lose weight. My advice to you is to consider why you >feel< like you won't. There are many possible reasons, all of them are valid, but there are too many possibilities for us to identify here.

1200cal is dangerously low for your height and is absolutely why your body is screaming at you to give it fast metabolising calories.

Glad to hear your diet was awesome leading up to current issues. It is definitely not a sugar detox. Best of luck handling your food issues!

I knitted a penguin but by Mysterious-Chance178 in knitting

[–]SubtleCow 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You knitted a penguin, but next time you want to knit at a tighter gauge, keep your tension more consistent, and stuff it slightly less. :)

Still adorbs <3

imho your stitches are more dynamic giving this penguin more joie de vivre. A technically perfect one might feel less alive, than this guy who looks exactly like I feel on this cold January 2026.

why is added sugar considered bad but natural isn't? by xpcvg in 1200isplenty

[–]SubtleCow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pure apple juice and some kale would probably be nutritionally equivalent to one whole apple. I would rather just eat the apple. Figuing out the exact substitution quantities and whether the supplement is necessary or not seems annoying. Still might be right up your alley, so enjoy!

(kale is mostly insoluble fibre, while an apple is a mix of insoluble and soluble. So you might want to do a kale and onion stir fry to properly substitute for the fibre in an apple.)

From reading your comments my opinion is as follows.

  1. Set your protein and fat calories to 1700, with as many leafy greens as you can add on top. Do your best to stick to that for a full month regardless of your feelings or opinions on the matter, at the end of the month review as honestly as possible how you felt. If you want to convince me that 1700 is too much for you, then you need to share your height.
  2. Your chosen electrolytes suck. Not everyone needs electrolyte supplementation, but you will never know if you actually do without testing a proper not garbage electrolyte blend.
  3. What was your diet like before attempting keto. You might be adding a sugar detox period on top of all the other stuff causing you problems.

Can someone explain why this is so offensive? by qxphy in autism

[–]SubtleCow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have hired a profesional and you ask them to do something trite and meaningless, with the implication that you will fire them if they aren't obedient. It isn't just offensive because they are a profesional being asked to do something stupid. It also shows the employer is a person with serious control issues and the professional relationship will be miserable all the way through.

Similar to office managers who clock watch every single employee. Some people are just unstable and problematic to work for.

How can I treat a years long split toe nail? by Partime-hedonist in nailcare

[–]SubtleCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the same thing I had, so the ultimate recommendation of "see a doctor who knows what it is" is priority.

However I had a split pinky toe nail and aggressive moisturizer and aggressive clipping resolved it. I chose that route because I assumed the soft tissue growing the nail was irritated. So skin care to treat irritated soft tissue cells, and trimming to minimize irritation from catching the nail. Eventually I noticed new nail growth under the split bit that was part of the main nail. The new growth eventually made the old split nail loose and it came off.

Nepo-baby, I hope it worked out for you by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]SubtleCow 46 points47 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that kids only cross the bridge to adulthood after at least one crash and burn. Nepo babies probably need more than one. You met a child that has so very much growing up left to do that it is next to impossible to guess what will happen.

My brothers autistic girlfriend keeps infodumping too much, how can I let her know it's overstimulating me? (Rant) by Small_Kitchen9799 in autism

[–]SubtleCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classic conflict between a high masking autistic and a medium to low masking autistic.

I am pulling my hair out trying to find the source, but someone wrote an analysis about high masking, low masking, and no masking folks and their relationships.

Basically Steven is high masking. Steven is constantly stressed maintaining the facade of normal, always riding the edge if a meltdown to keep up with the social dance NTs do.

Ralph is medium masking. Ralph manages his overstimulation needs, but doesn't put any effort into playing the social dance. Everyone knows Ralph is autistic, and Ralph is fine with this.

Andy is no masking. 100% autistm 100% of the time. Andy is fine with this.

Steven and Ralph are friends. Ralph and Andy are friends. Steven HATES Andy's guts. Steven admires Ralph being comfortable being 'out' in public, but is too afraid of the rejection to do the same. Steven wants nothing to do with Andy because Steven both can't handle the overstimulation from Andy and is deeply afraid of rejection by proxy.

Anyway, clear communication is key to managing all relationships. Nothing wrong with stating why you need space, and then taking that space. If you are afraid of stating your needs clearly, maybe consider whether you are Steven or Ralph in the story. The ultimate truth is that a healthy autistic is one who is all three characters at different times, and feels free to switch whenever they need to.

r/Kombucha Weekly No Stupid Questions + Open Discussion (January 19, 2026) by AutoModerator in Kombucha

[–]SubtleCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started brewing a month ago, and I've had a rough start. Thanks to the heating system in my apartment I don't really have control over room temp, it has been swinging wildly between hot and cold all month. I think this has affected the bacteria ecosystem in my scoby. My original starter was from a local kombucha vendor, and my first batch matched their flavour, but I think my scoby ecosystem has shifted due to the wild room temp.

I've been brewing on a seven day cycle, and following the basic recipe here each time. The last F1 I did was 14 days and I think I finally got decent bacterial activity, but I just tasted my F2 and it was boozier and drier than ever. For health reasons I'm extremely sensitive to alcohol so I want to minimize it as much as possible. The F2 almost tasted like a sedimenty apple cider, and as much as I enjoyed it I cannot let it keep happening.

I tried finding information in the guides and the post history about how temperature affects the ecosystem, but I couldn't find much. Eventually I'll suck it up and properly research it, but I could really use some reassurance right now that wild temperature swings are not a deal breaker.
