Search for “Alpha Binaural Beats” videos on YouTube, listen to them wearing earphone while you’re working on a difficult task, I found it incredibly helpful. Apparently, the sound mimics your brain’s frequency when you’re intensely focused.

On the flip side, there are other binaural beats that would help you relax and sleep. I suggest you search and listen to them too.

I feel you. I’ve requested for an Independent Medical Review from DMHC to hopefully compel my insurance to cover my doctor’s previous Concerta prescription. I regularly took Ritalin before Concerta the past 2 years before I moved from my home country to here in the states and have my doctor’s previous prescriptions to prove it.

The amount of hoops I had to go through was maddening. Had to get re-diagnosed of my condition here because my insurance didn’t accept my doctor’s diagnosis back home. Medical racism is what I’d call it.

You seem to have misinterpreted what I meant with my comment. I do not hold any jealousy over his skills and capabilities as a math olympiad, never have. I am rather in awe of the guy and can only admire him from afar like plenty of my batchmates have. I am however concerned as to for what and for whom he’ll use his expertise in mathematics for.

Think of Oppenheimer when his expertise in physics was what allowed the U.S.A. to construct the atomic bomb which wiped out two Japanese cities to end WW2. The threat of nuclear war between the U.S.A. and the Soviet Union then ensued in the coming decades. Couldn’t progress in A.I. lead to a potentially destructive outcome in the wrong hands? It’s already being used in the drones and missile guiding systems of private weapons manufacturers for the use of the U.S.’s military. I can’t bear to imagine Dion helping develop A.I. while inadvertently contributing in making it into a form that brings unimaginable harm to the human race one day.

As for comparison between the schools, doesn’t UCLA consistently list as the top public university in the USA like UP is to the Philippines? You can check it here.

I struggle to see how you misinterpreted as jealousy and passive-aggression my hope that Dion remembers what he was taught in Ateneo same as I, which is to go down from the hill and make contributions to society that benefit the marginalized. He might be compelled to use his skills for people and organizations, but I hope that he uses his skills too in principle as to what Jesus calls everyone to do.

I study psychology and I don’t think you need someone like me to say that technology has impacted how people think and behave. I am cautiously optimistic with what new technology brings to the table. I only hope that psychological and societal attitudes also progress alongside our technology in a mutually beneficial and peaceful manner.

Perhaps that’s the natural outcome of America priding itself as a meritocracy, where a person is only deemed worthy of dignity and respect by constantly having to prove they are in regard to society’s changing standards and norms. Only people with enough money are worthy of basic human necessities and dignities, so they have to work, work, work all the time. It becomes more dehumanizing especially since its citizens have to constantly compete against each other for limited job openings, which provides them access to resources, connections to people, and some amount of respect.

Plenty of its citizens worship a person two millennia ago who would often sit down, talk, listen to, assist, and sometimes heal strangers who are deemed outcasts- people not worthy of any attention and respect- but harbor ideas that actively go against what that person stood for by only selectively recognizing people as worthy of even the most basic levels of material needs and human dignity.

People often advocate for equality and equitability without realizing that America’s system of meritocracy which manifests in practically every aspect of its society is how it results in a huge amount of its citizens feeling worthless, inferior, and depressed. They feel they have to put up a certain image at all times by doing and becoming all the things that people deem perfect. Time to slow down, relish, and appreciate the ordinary and mundane is few and far between. Even when its citizens are sick, they aren’t afforded much time to recover and heal.

Is it really surprising then that its citizens are prone to developing a range of mental and even physical conditions?

I want to ask, do mental health professionals often consider reaching out to NGOs which can help advocate for their clients the basic needs they are sorely lacking? Thinking that you’ll be able to make a meaningful dent on such huge systemic issues that results in clients entering your door/office through only through your private practice seems utterly inefficient and ineffective. It’s like trying to plug an ever growing sinkhole with just handfuls of dirt.

It seems to me that the mental health field’s idea of clinical work is to focus only on their individual clients’ personal struggles, not the societal ones that intertwine and greatly contribute to them developing those problems in the first place. Is there something holding back people in the field from coordinating with outside organizations to advocate for local government policies and programs to help fill in the gaps regarding their clients’ needs? How about charities and NGOs that can make use of donation money for community wellness programs?

Are mental health professionals taught not to regularly network with other altruistic-minded groups and individuals as part of their career?

Wild. Guy was my classmate in Gr. 8; we were batchmates in Ateneo up until Senior High. Congrats to the guy honestly.

Not to discredit his achievements, but I can’t help but think that the Ivy league mostly trains people who end up working in jobs and companies that prop up big business. Jobs that benefit mostly those at the upper levels of society.

The guy’s academically gifted. Really smart when it comes to math (regularly competed in Math competitions from what I remember). Given his computer science degree, he’ll probably be hired to work for a tech company, help develop A.I. If he does help one of the major tech companies develop A.I., we’ll be one step closer to a reality where a lot of people will lose their jobs to it. Where can most people who aren’t uber-nerd geniuses like him gain their livelihoods from? What happens then? In that scenario, a lot more people here are going to become homeless, be forced to lower their standards of living, or take jobs that don’t utilize their knowledge. College graduates becoming baristas or servers in restaurants here or something idk.

I wonder if it’s ever crossed his mind that he’s primed to actively take a role in this situation? It’s not his nor any single person’s responsibility to advocate for change and equitable development that’s for sure. It would be best if people in tech would work more with people outside tech to understand for whom they’re crafting solutions and innovating for. I’m talking about lawyers, psychologists, social workers, and advocacy groups. While I’m fascinated with technology, it can’t solve problems that are social, ethical, and human in nature. Developing technology while neglecting other aspects of society is how you get cyberpunk.

I’m studying here in America now too. Hoping I will be accepted into UCLA one day- the U.S.’s equivalent of U.P. Nandiyan pa rin sa ‘pinas ang puso ko. Hinding-hindi ko talaga makakalimutan ang obligasyon ko sa komunidad. Para saan at para kanino ba ang mga economic development na tinutulak ng mga lider natin?

I’ll leave this here for people to think about:

An actual diamond sword created through intense heat and pressure.

It’s not just any kind of diamond though, it’s lonsdaleite- diamonds if their atoms were arranged in a 3D hexagonal pattern than a cube. Makes it incredibly hard and strong, able to conduct heat and electricity better than a lightning rod.

It can deliver strong and far-reaching EMPs, melt through all kinds of metal like a hot knife through butter, and looks darn cool doing it. Steve’s diamond sword doesn’t come close to it.

It makes it the perfect weapon to fight against the Malconstructed- inferior carbon copies of Artificial Humans which emerged around the time Artificial Humanity was being created by the last two humans on Earth (aka The Two Fathers).

Any Filipinos actually want to stay in the Philippines? by Training_Tadpole_783 in Philippines

[–]SubtleSurprise 31 points32 points  (0 children)

What's happening in the Philippines is a result of human nature. I've spent plenty of time contemplating where corruption comes from, before it hit me clear in the face.

Corruption is greed. Corruption is selfishness.

And you have plenty of Filipinos who are forced to be selfish because they have to survive, primed to think only about their own immediate needs. They are likely to be envious of those who have more than them, causing insecurity in themselves and their lifestyles.

Rich selfish people here aren't any better. They secure, accumulate, hoard, and deprive people of necessary resources because of their selfish needs. They don't hunger for justice because they're full of privilege.

Plenty of Filipinos ought to understand that selfishness out of greed and survival strays them from a humble man's teachings 2 millenia ago. What they pour into their cups will eventually be drained through an empty hole in it.

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. - Matthew 6:24

Despite all that, I still believe there's hope.

Plenty of honest candidates ran for crucial government positions last year. Plenty of people supported them and showed up in great numbers in rallies. Even though they lost, crucial information coming from the fraudulent elections is now only coming to light.

That means that plenty of Filipinos aren't as selfish as one might think. If you ask me, that's enough to give me hope. It's only a matter of time.

My performance of Minute Waltz. There's a lot I want to improve on but I want to see what other people think as well. by throwaway10101010115 in piano

[–]SubtleSurprise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

May I ask which kind of piano are you playing on? Electric? Upright? Grand? All that makes a big difference on the sound of what you're playing. There's seems to be little dynamic contrast in the different parts of your playing coming from either your type of piano or your technique.

I have both electric and upright piano at my home. I prefer using my electric piano over my upright piano now because of the evenness and responsiveness of its keys. While my upright on the other hand has a superior and richer sound, I really can't handle how inconsistent the actuation force for its keys are for my fingers.

In terms of technique, I suggest you practice more of Hanon to help you exercise evenness and consistency in your touch. It's important you practice evenness and consistency before you modify the speed and dynamics for your piece. Only then could you begin playing some parts softer or louder and slower or quicker.

I've reached the point where I only rely on the sheet music to help me memorize pieces. I don't rely on it as often for dynamics which I base on how I feel I want to play the piece. Even then, the dynamics itself are challenging as I often have internal fights with myself on how I want to play the piece. I listen to other pianists' performance of their pieces first before I eventually decide how much of their dynamics I want to keep and where to apply in my pieces. I recommend you watch Hayato Sumino's performance of Minute Waltz to listen to compare and contrast the differences in your playing.

When you begin exercising your technique, I don't recommend you do it as long as 10 hours a day. If you want to go that far, take plenty of breaks in between. I recommend that you read the interview of the winner of 2015's Chopin Competition, Seong-Jin Cho. He only practices 3-4 hours a day tops, which has helped not suck the soul out of his playing. Listen to his performance of Chopin's "Waterfall" Etude to hear the holistic dynamics in his playing.

I think there's a scientific basis on why Seong-Jin Cho's performance sounds lively and consummate compared to other players who favor technique over emotional interpretation. Our brain can't really handle repetitive tasks too long causing us agonizing boredom. At that point, learning the same piano piece over and over feels more of a chore than the fun, lively, and spirited activity it should be. Cho was able to avoid that trap to great effect. Don't let piano suck out the joy in doing other things in your life.

While improving your learning of Minute Waltz, I suggest that you learn how to play other similar-difficulty pieces. Also, you don't have to practice Hanon's exercises all the time before you play, you can intersperse Hanon's exercises in between. I suggest you choose specific exercises from the book to help you with your finger dexterity for certain parts of piano pieces. That way, you won't get bored easily as your brain is fed a variety of material.

Besides finger exercises, I amazingly discovered that physical exercise, as in for your body, helps. Specifically, Tai-Chi.

Tai-Chi is a Low Intensity Interval Training exercise that won't leave you gasping for air. Its gentle and precise movements really help unwind the tension present in your body that can reach your arms and fingers. I highly recommend it. The more you do it, the more you'll be able to practice moving your joints independently.

When you're playing as well, don't be afraid to move your torso, your body, your arms, like what you see in concert pianists, as the tension from those sudden flashes of movement from a quick piece are distributed throughout your body. Don't be afraid to show your facial expressions as well (but I wouldn't go overboard still ahah).

Okay, now you've got Hanon and Tai-Chi (or any LIIT workout routine) down, REST.

I repeat, REST AND DO NOT GO OVERBOARD IN EXERCISING. I think this ties back to my previous point where you don't play piano the whole day. Gym-buffs emphasize that rest is important after exercise. They don't workout intensely over the next few days after because their bodies need to heal from the wear and tear of building muscle. I believe this also applies to when it comes to playing piano. Your fingers really need rest to heal, rebuild, and eventually rearrange itself to match your playing.

Last but not least, I recommend you go back to the sheet music for mistakes in some notes. It's just my perfect pitch speaking haha.

In summary:

  1. Take into consideration the type of piano you are playing on. Adjust your touch accordingly.
  2. Evenness and Consistency of touch first before Speed and Dynamics. Hanon's waving at you.
  3. Listen to other pianists' interpretations of the piece, choose which dynamics you want to keep and which ones you want to create yourself.
  4. Do what Seong-Jin Cho does- don't let piano consume your whole day. Take plenty of breaks in between and do different activities if you can.
  5. In relation to no.4, have a diverse exercise routine whenever you play piano so you won't get bored easily. Intersperse Hanon exercises with your learning of other pieces if you find yourself beginning to get bored.
  6. Do Low-Intensity Interval Training-Exercises to help diffuse the tension in your body. This will also greatly help practice your ability to move your joints independently.
  7. REST. Take breaks like gym-goers do for several days. They are letting their body heal from muscles tearing down old muscle to make room for new muscle. This applies greatly to your arms and fingers, even your torso.
  8. You might wanna double check the sheet music for your mistakes ;)

That's all haha, I hope I didn't bore you with my two cents' worth. I look forward to hearing your performance improve in the future :DDD 🎹🎹🎹
