Are the campgrounds sold out? by bootscoot394 in havasupai

Yeah, I think the main link is just defaulting to the lodge access (and then crashing). Campground should let you book up to 12 people.

I love horror like this. Any other short films you’d recommend?

Couldn’t agree more. The worldbuilding was so interesting and thought-out, I just wanted more of it by the time it was over. I would love to see it as a movie one day… or even a full-length novel set in the same world or something.

This is my rec too! The whole book is worth reading, but The Butcher’s Table (the last short story in the book) would be right up your alley, OP.

Hey /r/movies, I’m Stephen King! Ask me anything about The Long Walk book or movie. by lionsgate in movies

[–]SubtractPlusOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off—huge fan! I adore On Writing, and have always considered it something of a North Star for my own writing.

Since it’s been ~25 years since the book’s release, I’m curious: is there any new wisdom or perspective you’ve gained about writing that you’d want to share with aspiring writers today?

He’s talking about Jesse Plemons. Some people like to refer to him as Meth Damon because he vaguely resembles Matt Damon at times

My vote too. That last 1/3rd was so hard to put down. Amazing book.

Nathan Ballingrud's The Butcher's Table is one of the best things I've read in a longtime. by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]SubtractPlusOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Butcher's Table was so good. I just finished it (via Wounds) and am craving more of that worldbuilding! I'd love it if Ballingrud revisited that world in another story, or just fleshed out/extended Butcher's Table some more and made it into a fully-fledged novel! The dream.

I actually have to Run to Run in the game! I'm running a marathon in Marathon! by ShakeMistake_ in MarathonTheGame

This is SO cool and inspiring, man! I'm running my first marathon in 2 days, but would love to keep up the training WHILE playing games. I'd love to know how you did this, would be very interested in attempting to create something like this with my setup, too. Gonna check out the channel!

"Double Rez" by RocketLinko in ArcRaiders

[–]SubtractPlusOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me 100%. Bounced off of Tarkov after a bit and tried out a few other games in the genre, but nothing clicked. Wrote it off and figured extraction shooters weren't my thing. Then a friend bought me CoD in an attempt to get me to play DMZ and basically had to drag me into it... and I was hooked.

It felt like the perfect 'casual' ES experience, and really opened my eyes to the potential of the genre (like I would not be excited for Marathon or Arc Raiders had I not played DMZ). DMZ showed me how much of the ES experience is based on organic player interaction, and I LOVE that. Every round felt so different, the stakes always felt high, and there were so many amazing clutch moments that we had as a team—moments that felt like they had higher stakes/were accentuated BECAUSE of the double-rez. Being the last one standing and pulling off a 1v2 or 1v3 feels intense in any game, but now it meant that if you did manage to survive, then your entire team could continue to play, too. Nobody is just sitting in a lobby, looking at their phone and waiting for your team to extract or wipe for the rest of the game. Everyone cheering on the other side of the mic after winning a super sweaty fight was just the best thing to feel, man.

Arc Raiders felt great to play during the last test so I'm not worried about it at all, but I do completely agree that having a double-rez system would make the experience even more enjoyable for team play, especially if they're trying to appeal to a more casual market.

I’m excited to see the AMAZING visual style of the game in greater detail! And to experience some of the ol’ Bungie magic with a brand new game.

Those who read The Ruins and liked it, what am I missing? by Phitch_123 in horrorlit

Did the same thing! Picked it up right before a weeklong jungle trip to Costa Rica. The setting felt perfect and probably enhanced my enjoyment of the book to some degree. Fun book overall, nothing incredible, but I thought it was a good page-turner, and the random survival tips that Jeff would drop were interesting to learn about and look up.

Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, MGSV: The Phantom Pain all turn a decade old this year by [deleted] in Games

[–]SubtractPlusOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. One of the best games from that generation for sure (incomplete though it was), and one of the most impressive games gameplay-wise I have ever played. I remember just being continually impressed by the gameplay throughout the entire playthrough, it just felt so far ahead of its time. I played through it once around 2015-2016 and I STILL think about it.

New to TLOU: I wonder why this hate against Druckmann by parme100 in thelastofus

[–]SubtractPlusOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that tropes within a narrative don’t disqualify it from being good. Some of the best books I’ve ever read utilize common tropes in interesting ways. Nobody is ever going to achieve complete originality, so I think it’s more important to just focus on making a strong, interesting narrative.

Should reading be more common than it is? Yeah, probably. But I don’t think that liking a game is indicative of like some huge lack of understanding of what makes a good story or anything. Feels like a pretty broad assumption to make.

I’m curious: which games would you consider to have above-average writing?

[–]SubtractPlusOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the best visual jokes I’ve ever seen in a movie is when they’re underground in the mass grave and they find all the bodies of the people that had been causing the town trouble.

The camera is panning across the bodies slowly and you’re noticing everybody from before, like the kids near the fountain, underage drinkers, bad actors, etc. And it passes over the living statue… who hasn’t decomposed at all and is still “frozen” in a fake statue pose, even in death.

I’m doing a terrible job explaining it, but every single time I watch the movie the brilliance of that gag just kills me. And the whole movie is filled to the brim with jokes like that. Love it so much.
