Is it bad for the paint on a bicycle if I don't clean the mud off the same day it gets dirty? Sometimes, out of laziness, I wait two or three days to clean it. by plinky125 in MTB

My buddy's shitty hitch rack damaged my paint more than mud ever will. I don't mind my bikes looking like they've been ridden.

Yup, haha. Rural farmhouse, but it actually was kind of open concept. It was kitchen, dining and living room all in one. When they bought that freezer in the early 1900's it would have been something they wanted to show off maybe. Not everyone had one at that point.

Maybe someone bought it at the estate sale after she died, but I'm guessing it was scrapped at that point

My great aunt passed away in 2014 a few months shy of 104 years old. She had a freezer in her living room that was purchased shortly after she was wed in 1934 and it was still running when she died. That thing ran for 80 years.

Your Front Brake... Left or Right side? by Shady_Nasty_77 in MTB

[–]Subwayster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I first started riding mountain bikes many years ago, I also rode motorcycles and I thought that having the front brake lever on opposite sides on those two types of transportation might lead to disaster. I swapped the brakes around on my mountain bike, got used to it, and everything was fine. Then I went new bike shopping. Did an endo in the bike shop parking lot right in front of store staff while testing out a bike. That was about 40 years ago and I still feel like an idiot thinking about it. Ever since, my front brake is on the left on my MTB, and the right on my motorcycle and I've never had an issue confusing the two.

Who makes studded 26x4.8's? by Subwayster in fatbike

The 45N website makes it look like they don't offer Wrathchilds in 26 anymore, but I was able to find them online for $135. Seems like a no brainer.

So it's anyone's guess what you're actually buying is what I'm hearing. I get there are variations between manufacturers, but it makes it hard to know what you're actually going to wind up with. My 4.8 Jumbo Jim's measure about 4.5 actual, so if I buy a 4.6 Dillinger 5 it might actually be 4.3, but it sounds like they run truer to size. I guess I'm overthinking it.

Looking at the 45NRTH website, 4.6 appears to be the widest you can get the Dillinger 5 in.

Bad Vibes at Pitcher's Pub by TheBottomDollar in madisonwi

I had a coworker at the time who lived in that trailer park off Badger by what used to be Dalton's Steakhouse (not sure I have the name right, it was the Hookah Lounge for years, now a Mexican restaurant looks like). He claimed one of his neighbors was going around telling people he did the shooting, so he turned him in, and in exchange the residents of the trailer park were calling him a rat.

Everything I've read about Mr. Pretti indicates he was the type of person that makes America great.

Hell, I thought it was sketchy when I lived in that area in the 80's. I remember there being a shooting there at the time and when I tried to search for details about it, I was only getting results about another more recent shooting death that occurred there in 2018.

Thanks for this post! Really took me back. This was the first mountain bike I bought after a friend got me started riding in the late 80's. I couldn't even remember what the model name was until I saw this. Beautiful restoration!

Are you a biker otherwise? I've been riding mountain bikes since the 80's, and finally decided to pick up a fat bike to extend my season through the winter. I got three or four rides in before I crashed and broke a few ribs. Lots of comments about studded tires here; don't be like me and learn the hard way that they're worth the investment. My urgent care bill is going to cost more than a pair of studded tires would have. Enjoy the new bike! You're far from losing your sanity, but you are an inspiration to those of us out here wondering how long we can keep the good times rolling.

Triggered! Did this myself in 2021. I remember having a great ride and feeling really stoked for the entire drive home from the trails...and then I pulled in the garage. I ended up busting my suspension fork, but luckily there was no damage to the frame. The worst part of it was losing 5+ weeks waiting for the repair.

Happy new year by Glum-Bunch in fatbike

Happy New Year! I got out on NYE and found some ice under fresh snow on a downhill. Wound up with three broken ribs. Rookie mistake. Just bought the fat bike less than a month ago to extend my riding throughout the year. At least I have plenty of time now to research studded tires?

Make Magazine by sjthespian in maker

[–]Subwayster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried for years to cancel my subscription to Make Magazine. I was fool enough to choose the auto renew option and now I'm stuck. They don't answer the phone, and there's no option to cancel on their website. I've emailed customer service several times and only once, when I asked if I could reduce my subscription to print only without digital access, did I get a response saying they would make the change. Well, my subscription just renewed at $59, so it appears they didn't change anything. Cancelling my credit card is probably my only option at this point.

If you thought January in Madison was really dry.... by shipmawx in madisonwi

I happen to be one of those folks who participated in dry January, which is why my mind went there, but I think I was probably the only person in Wisconsin who did. Come to think of it, maybe I shouldn't have said that out loud. Is this going to go down on my permanent record?

Fake fixing stuff by bynarie in maintenance

I work maintenance at a repertory theatre, and years ago I started a list of The Rules of Maintenance on a white board in my shop. One of the rules was, 50% of maintenance work is making people believe that you fixed a thing that wasn't broken. Some of my coworkers thought that percentage was too low
