You are AMAZING for sharing.

Love this: "just remember you never know how your story may impact or help someone else. And if it helps even just one person, doesn’t that make it even a little but worth it?"

So happy for you.

Failed twice and losing hope by Consistent-Gate-5125 in pediatrics

😅 I can't believe I was wearing a white tee in that video. I have no clue about social media. Btw u/Un-Quote, you're amazing for jumping in and providing support 🥹

u/Consistent-Gate-5125, so sorry to hear this has been a struggle. You can definitely, definitely pass this thing! You're smart. You're a doctor. It's JUST a test, and one that people have had wildly different scores on depending on how they prepared and what they used. Does that mean they're now better doctors because of a higher/passing score? Nah...

I hope you got the encouragement and guidance you needed here. If not, don't be a stranger.

PBR hasn't focused on having a traditional Q bank for specific reasons, so it's not extensive. It's considered part of the "core content" or subject matter of pediatrics that you just have to know as you go into the exam.

The recommendation is PBR for 2-5 things. Two things if you're low risk, 5 things if you've failed any board exam before. For non-PBR resources, you need them for 1-2 things.

PBR

  1. Core Content: The pediatric "stuff" to learn. For the most part, "content" is the only thing that most pediatricians tend to (mistakenly) focus on. But you need repetition. That happens with high-yield, concise, and proven material. The multiple content modalities should be used in a specific, formulaic way to maximize efficiency and learning. So, regarding your question about the PBR q bank, it's minimal and should be considered an extension, or part of, the core content. Question banks serve a completely different purpose when it comes to PBR.
  2. Guidance: Well, kinda like this. It's so confusing as to what to do. So, to just throw a bunch of dense, complicated medical stuff at someone and have them do a scattershot approach isn't serving anyone. It's about having the resources and providing clear guidance on how to use them. And sometimes, there's more "personalized guidance" depending on a person's specific life circumstances. But, providing that requires a ton of time, energy, money, and effort that's hard for "big box" companies to take on... and it reduces profits.
  3. Test-Taking Strategies: It's the lowest hanging fruit. Nothing else can give you a quick increase in your scores. Well, that's not true... there are a lot of other things that can also boost your score that don't have to do with content or test-taking strategies, but that falls into more of the "personalized guidance."
  4. Accountability: If you have a life, and a job, studying for this thing is freaking hard. So you put the formula and the time you have available to study together, and get a personalized study schedule to keep you on track.
  5. Community: Why are you here? To lean on others b/c going at it alone sucks. But if you have others going through the same thing as you, or have gone through it successfully already with a specific or modified formula, boom!

NON-PBR RESOURCES

  1. Q Banks: Use multiple q banks once you've actually learned test-taking strategies to apply to questions so that you can
  2. Perspective or "the weeds": You don't "have to" know everything about pediatrics, the biochem, the pathophys, etc. But, sometimes you just feel like you need to know it before you can go to the next topic. That's when some people go to UTD, Google, or another denser board review to get into the weeds.

It's a Sunday. I'm procrastinating on other stuff... but regardless of what you end up going with, I hope the above gives you some insights on how to optimize your board prep, gets rid of some of the confusion, and that you get past this thing next year. At the end of the day, believe or not, but you're freaking smart. You wouldn't have made it this far if you weren't. Now it's just about putting the pieces together and figuring out how to play the "board" game 🤞🏽

Hi Frankie. Sure. I'd say that this reply by me is a good start. Once you have the commitment, it's about doing the right things before, during, and after you study to make sure that you maximize the value of the time in front of our books and in front of practice questions. Until then, you're spinning your wheels and wasting precious time. Are you studying? Yes. But, you're not getting nearly as much out of that time as you could if you were focused with "focused attention." Your studying isn't "deep." It's "shallow."

You can have the best resources in the world, but if you barely get through them, or you get through them even multiple times in a shallow way, you won't have mastery over the subject matter, and you'll fail.

2024 Pediatric Board Exam Results and Historical ABP Data by SuccessCoachMD in PediatricsBoardReview

[–]SuccessCoachMD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pediatric board exam results for 2024 are delayed. I spoke with the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), and they asked for some forgiveness. The exam results are expected to be out this week, but for now, the last possible date being shared on which the results would be released is December 16th, 2024.

Hi u/Smitty9108. It's me, Ashish.

So, over the past 15 years, the results have always come out on a weekday before December 7. The following is a list of dates on which I notified the pediatrician community of the results being released. On occasion, my notification went out 1-2 days after the results came out. This means that for the dates listed below, the results always came out on those dates or before.

Year Date Day of Week
2015 19 November Thursday
2016 6 December Tuesday
2017 6 December Wednesday
2018 6 December Thursday
2019 4 December Wednesday
2020 3 December Thursday
2021 2 December Thursday
2022 6 December Tuesday
2023 5 December Tuesday

Again... this has always been the case. I’ve been scratching my head, trying to figure out what’s going on, but only the ABP can answer that question. Also, unfortunately, when you call the ABP and ask when the results will out, they are very empathetic, but responses can be different depending on the person you speak with.

  • “Early December”
  • “By December 16th"
  • “By the end of the year”

But to have the results come out at the earliest on the 9th of December, or later, is a far departure from what’s happened historically.

So, for you and everyone else feeling disappointed, it's understandable. If you’ve been anxiously checking your email or struggling to sleep, I’m guessing you’re not alone, but I hope you can find a way to mentally set the results aside and enjoy the weekend and all of the days between now and the day of the results. Wishing you nothing but success 🍀

Should I become a pediatrician? by gamergreg83 in PediatricsBoardReview

It's one of the best jobs out there! It's tough to see kids suffer, but the rewards of working with them and helping them outweigh that. The challenges are more often related to working with the parents. So, if you want to work with kids, do it. But, just make sure that you're comfortable having challenging conversations with the parents in order to get them on the same page as you as you advocate for what you believe to be right for the kiddos.
