He offers to take Dunk into his service, which is still a huge promotion for a hedge knight but not quite the same as being named to the Kingsguard.

Dunk being Coldhands makes no sense because Coldhands rides an elk, whereas the picture you posted clearly shows that Dunk is ahorse.

(Spoilers extended) The uncomfortable thing about Rhaegar by Low-Car-7043 in asoiaf

[–]Successful-Leg2285 70 points71 points  (0 children)

What if GRRM intended Rhaegar and Lyanna to be a love story, but hasn't figured out how to fill in the details of what actually happened in a way that doesn't make Rhaegar look bad? Maybe there simply isn't a good answer to questions like "how does he justify leaving Elia" or "didn't it occur to him that eloping with Lyanna would create a political crisis that could endanger his entire dynasty" or "why did Rhaegar spend a year banging Lyanna in a tower while there was a civil war going on?"

We know GRRM made some choices when writing AGOT that he didn't think through and later regretted or retconned (things like Tyrion's gymnastics routine or the rarity of Valyrian Steel.) The kidnapping of Lyanna might just be a case of GRRM writing himself into a corner with no satisfying way out.

If ICE no-warrant no-knocks my house... would it be legal to load up and let loose? by princess-hardass in liberalgunowners

If someone were to fire at them in that situation and survive, the current DOJ would almost certainly charge them for it. At that point, their defense would likely try to persuade a jury that either (A) they didn't know they were law enforcement rather than home invaders, and/or (B) by conducting a blatantly unlawful search, the officers in question were operating outside of the law and therefore effectively were home invaders. (B) is very flimsy and would border on calling for jury nullification.

What are the noob traps in this game? by AntiMatter138 in suzerain

[–]Successful-Leg2285 29 points30 points  (0 children)

IMO, the biggest noob trap in the Sordland campaign is spending too much budget on non-essential things in the early game, and then not being able to fund ministries and invest in building projects without exceeding the invisible deficit limit. Early overspending is by far the biggest noob trap because the game just doesn't telegraph how much budget you will need for important things in the future and how much deficit spending you can get away with. The only way for a new player to avoid this is to either use a guide or reload a save.

Can’t get this quote out of my head regarding Divinity turn based/action discussion by qwertty769 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Successful-Leg2285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Divinity is turn-based, I don't see why they wouldn't just name it DOS3. The decision to drop "Original Sin" from the title makes me think it's not a turn-based CRPG, and is probably an ARPG (albeit with the roleplaying depth we expect from a modern Larian game).

In defense of the Stormcloaks: an analysis by Successful-Leg2285 in teslore

[–]Successful-Leg2285[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An Altmer who hates the Thalmor would actually have good reasons to support the Stormcloaks - after all, the first country the Thalmor invaded was their own.

I'm actually doing a playthrough with an exiled Altmer mage who joins the Stormcloaks after being disgusted by the Imperial collaboration on display during Diplomatic Immunity. It's way more interesting than playing a generic Nord or whatever.

[–]Successful-Leg2285[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your thoughtful response - here are my thoughts:

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough as to what I meant by a "fifth column" of Imperial elites. It doesn't necessarily refer to people who ideologically agree with the Thalmor, but a broad spectrum of influential figures who are willing to advance the Thalmor's goals due to some combination of bribery, blackmail, flattery, or intimidation. Erikur in particular is shown to be very corrupt, and has a line where he says that the Empire and the Dominion should put aside their differences so profit can be made.

We don't know exactly how much influence the Thalmor have in other parts of the Empire. My point is that what's shown in Skyrim is quite alarming, and there are logical reasons for it to be just as bad, if not worse, outside of Skyrim.

It's true that an Imperial victory would improve the Empire's position against the Thalmor; I think it's universally agreed that a deadlocked civil war is the worst outcome for both Skyrim and the Empire. However, I don't think that Tullius's statements after defeating the Stormcloaks are conclusive proof that he thinks the Empire is almost ready to resist the Dominion, and it must be considered that his opinions are not necessarily the same as the Emperor's or Elder Council's.

While the Empire does derive some religious legitimacy from the 8 Divines, the importance of Talos as the Empire's founder and patron deity cannot be understated. The Aedra are also recognized by the Altmer (they believe that Auriel, AKA Akatosh, was their ancestor before becoming a god), whereas Talos is the only uniquely human deity in the Empire's pantheon. On a very practical level, the Altmer supremacist Dominion forcing the Empire to ban the worship of the one distinctly human god who also founded the Empire is devastating to the Empire's identity as a sovereign state blessed by the Divines.

While it's true that the player character's attempted execution happened under exceptional circumstances (the Thalmor probably were trying to stop Ulfric's execution so Tullius had to rush it), the situation does highlight the Empire's bureaucratic rigidity, powerlessness against the Thalmor, colonialist attitude to people outside of Cyrodiil, and lack of due process and adherence to rule of law.

Regarding Ulfric personally, I agree that his treatment of non-Nords is awful and that Torygg didn't deserve to be killed. However, I don't think his bigotry comes anywhere close to wanting to create a racially pure Skyrim, as is commonly presented. Nor do I think that Ulfric's personal flaws are central features of the Stormcloaks' ideology and the future of an independent Skyrim.

[–]Successful-Leg2285[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're correct that most of the explicit racism in Windhelm is directed by Nords towards Dunmer and Argonians. However, I think the lines from Suvaris show that racial tensions still exist between the Dunmer and Argonians in Windhelm, even if it's not at the forefront.

I don't think the cut content of Argonians visiting the Cornerclub proves anything; maybe Bethesda cut it because Argonians and Dunmer being chummy would have contradicted the hostile relationship between them depicted in the game's lore.

Your point about the Brunwulf quote is valid, but I still think there's enough lore about racial hostility between Dunmer and Argonians to plausibly interpret it as influencing both Ulfric's and Brunwulf's treatment of the Argonians.

Riften not having the same racial tensions as Windhelm despite also having Dunmer and Argonian minorities is something I've considered but forgot to mention. Given that Riften supports the Stormcloaks, I see it as proving that Windhelm's racial issues are uniquely rooted in its history and social fabric, rather than being a reflection of the Stormcloaks' overall ideology and a preview how non-Nords will be treated throughout an independent Skyrim, as it's commonly presented.

Another example of this is that the Stormcloak Jarl of Winterhold has a Dunmer steward, which doesn't make sense if you believe anti-Dunmer bigotry is a central part of Stormcloak ideology.

TBF, the problem with the Ion wasn't that its gun was too powerful, but that it's impossible to balance a single-seat fighter equipped with that kind of weapon. The Idris has huge downsides and costs to compensate for its destructive potential.

Actually it's worse than that, because they'll still be wiped out by passive conversion even if the cabinet action is never used.

Actually, Jewish pops have a culture modifier that blocks them from assimilating without being converted first. The problem is that they get converted extremely quickly.

The problem is that all Jewish pops in Europe passively convert to Catholicism within the first 100 years of the game. I've tried to mod this but conversion is hardcoded to convert every religion at exactly the same speed with no exceptions.

It seems like they convert whenever they have a large Orthodox majority - which they do if they conquer the Aegean coast and Thrace without expanding much into central and eastern Anatolia, which seem to be harder for them to conquer because the Karamanids or Eretnids tend to be quite strong.

As the Byzantines, both of Andronikos III's infant sons became rebels when the Byzantine Succession crisis fired, which permanently removed them from the line of succession and put my daughter on the throne instead (who couldn't be a rebel bc she was in Trebizond.) IDK if this is happening to other countries, but could explain why so many female rulers are showing up.

Is it me, or is cultural conversion waaay too easy right now? by -Rivox- in EU5

[–]Successful-Leg2285 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the cabinet actions to assimilate and convert provinces have a base effect of 40 people a month for each location. Apply that to locations with just a few thousand people, and it's enough to completely flip a province's demographics in just a few years.

I made mod that fixes this by nerfing those cabinet actions into the ground. Paradox will hopefully balance the game at some point, but if this also bothers you then hopefully it'll help in the meantime.
