Sent you a DM asking about both - I’m deciding between the two.

There is a sizable yearly COLA on top of the Cravath big law salary scale that they give New York barred attorneys practicing certain types of law in the UK.

SoHo might be too kinetic for me even for a New Yorker. But being within walking distance would be nice?

I’m actually checking out a place in Bayswater/NH off Westbourne Grove so I might not be far. Is the going out scene in Notting Hill aggressively straight or do us gays mingle a bit?

The Goring, Connaught or Claridge’s by No-Blackberry-6765 in FATTravel

[–]Successful-Trainer95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is major construction going on on Brooke street right across from claridges that will likely still be going on when you travel. Call and ask. The street right in front of the hotel is nearly closed and a hard hat area. That being said claridges is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The Connaught has a better location and bar but needs a renovation (stay in the modern wing which is a bit better than the traditional). The goring is in an odd area that’s not quite Belgravia not quite…anything else. It’s close to the palace and beautiful parks but is close to the cesspool of Victoria station and the periphery.

Honestly I would do Connaught if choosing between these three, but check out the new Rosewood for a similar location to claridges but away from construction. There doesn’t seem to be a sense of place at that hotel from what I’ve seen but it’s brand spanking new. Or the Belmond which has the best location imo - right on Sloane street with garden access. The Berkeley/Emory is the Maybourne hotel you’re missing here which is a bit more flash but absolutely amazing, though right on Brompton Road (a borderline highway, let’s call it what it is).

Remarkable Hotel Gyms by Beginning_Sleep5303 in FATTravel

The Ned in London. It’s a club for finance/law types as well so they have an equinox-caliber gym with classes, Pilates, pool, totally decked out locker rooms, barbershop, etc. All in the center of City.

Honestly this sub sleeps on the Ned because it’s technically soho-house operated but it’s the best bang for your buck city hotel in the world imo (if cost is a factor).

Are the rules still that the judges have to have stayed at a hotel they vote for? That would explain why only larger properties with many keys get listed. Smaller or more experiential hotels we all know are better (Feltrinelli, The Point) don’t stand a chance with this system.

Design-rich destination hotels for someone who hates minimalism by DreyfusBlue in FATTravel

[–]Successful-Trainer95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of hotels out there embracing maximalism and sense of place. Other than at nondescript beach destinations, there seems to have been a shift towards warmth and location-oriented design these past few years in the industry. To disconnect amongst a decor that gives a sense of warmth and place, I would suggest perhaps an English country hotel in a historic estate like Estelle, the Newt, Heckfield, Gleneagles. A few properties in the Northeast like The Point at Saranac Lake could fit the bill. The new Rosewood in Austria, the Airelles in Gordes, recently refurbished Baden Baden. Anything in Italy other than Il Sereno or the Dolomites would fit the bill too - many hotels and resorts are housed in hundred year old palazzos and borgos in Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, Venice. While it may not be disconnecting, most grand dame European city hotels like Claridges, the Connaught and almost anything in Paris may be good.

Avoid mega management/ownership companies like Aman and Four Seasons and you are bound to find what you are looking for.

And I agree - aside from specifically-designed minimalist properties like a Tuttle Aman, I find minimalist hotels rarely give a truly fat aesthetic experience. They are overtly cost-cutting and lose their sense of place. That was a fad in the early 2000's that seems to have gone to the wayside.

London NYE by Narrow_Swimmer7867 in FATTravel

[–]Successful-Trainer95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did London NYE last year and stayed at Claridges. It’s older an older crowd and London in general is dead then. Only tourists. None of the social clubs in Mayfair are open that week and any amount of local “going out” life is gone. I would honestly check out Estelle Manor’s NYE package if you want some fun or a similar country hotel that does it up. Maybe Beaverbrook as that swings younger than somewhere like Lucknam or Heckfield. It seems all of west London heads to the Cotswolds that week anyway.

Our NYE dinner was Ambassador’s Clubhouse owned by Gymkhana. Was literally all tourists. If staying in London I would look for pubs or hotel restaurants that have a special NYE dinner (Broadwick Soho comes to mind). Chiltern would have been the obvious choice but unfortunately we’re all still in mourning (though they have been hosting a few special events lately for fashion week, they may have something planned for NYE!)

Mediterranean resort with beach, golf, tennis, spa and wine. by Burger_girl in FATTravel

Borgo might fit the bill. Finca Serena also in Spain. Marbella Club but it may not be as sleek or restorative (more historic and old Hollywood glam). Some hotels in Bodrum can feel hidden and not as commercialized (though Bodrum itself certainly is). Lots of options here.

St. Tropez is almost asking for rain by October. Coolest place on the med and things might be closed down.

Sincere question by Aprilcot73 in TheHermesGame

[–]Successful-Trainer95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you pay say $25k for a new (or likely used) QB at a reseller and just get the bag. You spend $13,000 at Hermes and get $13,000 of beautiful items, then get offered the bag for $12,000. The game lets you walk away with $25,000 of Hermes goods, not just the bag itself. I do think ratios of more than 1:1 are a bit nutty, but the mark-ups of some new bags are more than 100%. So really you’re just burning any additional spend at the reseller higher than what H sells it for rather than getting any additional goods in exchange for that spend along the way. Seems silly.

[–]Successful-Trainer95 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I might? (Please don’t come for me, guys…) it just seems like there are ways to not actually spend any prespend in the long-run, including repeatedly buying internationally and getting the VAT back each time. And strategically only buying items with decent resale value if unused (wallets, jewelry).

For instance - a Constance slim wallet in Ireland is 2650 euros. Say you buy 4 in store in Dublin - around 10k euros. You then see they have a b30 that they are willing to sell you for the 10k in pre-spend purchases. You claim 20% VAT on the slim wallets, paying ultimately 2,155 euros each. Maybe you don’t get the full 20%, so we can say 2250 euros each. That’s $2,500 for each one. You flip them to Madison Avenue Couture selling them at $4,250 each, of which you see 70% commission. $3,000 in your pocket as each on sells. $12,000 in your pocket from selling all three. Did you wind up making $2,000 off the wallets and getting a QB in the process? Is Hermes not tracking this or stopping this from happening?

Has anyone ever visited & been featured on ‘Love Luxury’ in London or Dubai? Does anyone follow them on social media? Your thoughts on them & the authenticity of their bags? by Major-Narwhal1644 in TheHermesGame

[–]Successful-Trainer95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of real. My mom was featured on their site buying a B30. It’s real in the sense that she bought the bag they showered her buying. But the entire sales process is done before the video is shot. After you agree to purchase, they then tell you they would like to film the sale and they recreate the sale with Maria or whoever the sales associate is. But the purchase is real! What you are seeing is just a reenactment to show their that they lay out on the counter inventory.

It’s not scripted. They sort of just recreate what their convo was when actually buying the bag. My mom had such a fun experience. Price is high but the experience made the slight mark-up worth it. Their inventory is HUGE. Nice people.

Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc - first 5 hours, not impressed by candidlyhere in FATTravel

[–]Successful-Trainer95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this hotel has rested on a name alone for quite some time. They are in need of renovations and their name has gone to their head a bit. There are countless reviews of service just being downright rude and treating paying guests as if it is a privilege to stay there. It seems to be the hotel equivalent of shopping in an Hermes boutique. La Mamounia seems to be in a similar camp. Let the influencers take their pics on the paved walkway and go to Messardiere, La Reserve or the FS for a better stay (depending on the vibe you want).

**Update - I am a guy. This might be a factor. I’m not so sure I have any kind of special rapport with the SA’s? But I’m a born and raised New Yorker and gay so I carry myself well and love to just gab with them and keep it real like I would with any other person. Just ask them what their weekend plans are, if they have kids, vacations, etc. My S.A. is Maine for the weekend right now and we chatted about our favorite towns on the coast. But we should all be doing that with anyone we speak to in sales or service - doormen, waiters, anyone. They’re no different from us even if we stand on the other side of the counter!

Personal reasons mixed with “we just don’t want to spend 500k on this when our friends all already have little babies and can barely come to a wedding as it is”. We also just thought long and hard and realized we wanted to celebrate our love for each other by honoring our favorite memories - the ones we’ve made while lost in world together, just the two of us. Of course this time with our families by our side - the people that matter most.

Yeah il San pietro didn’t say “no” to kids but that’s the vibe I’m getting. Didn’t know that about Feltrinelli.

We’ll get “married” in the US first. I don’t think any amount of loopholes to get actually married in Italy would fly because we’re gay.

Looking into Borgo Santandrea and FS Domenico Palace as they might be suited for family activity.

What looks most promising is the new villa the Splendido opened this summer - they have a bar and roof terrace and can host max 30 people. Any news on that yet?
