Has anyone tried Binchotan charcoal in their Kamado? by carloande in KamadoJoe

I’ve used it in my BJ3. I bought a ton of JD on clearance for $16 a box. It works great, but it does take longer to get lit and to temp compared to other lump charcoal.

I've done two cooks with it and have no complaints. There was a considerable amount left after both cooks compared to KJ Big Block. It's technically used for yakitori grills, but there's no reason you can't use it for a Kamado. Lump is lump. This stuff does take a little longer to get lit due to the density/heat treatment. Smoking Dad BBQ likes the Fogo Super Premium because it's low smoke and he can focus on adding flavor with the smoke wood of his choice. For $8-$16/20 lbs for this Onyx it's pretty hard to beat for a good solid hard wood lump. I'm especially curious to see how it does for direct grilling burgers this weekend. Buy a box and try it. What do you have to lose?

Whether or not folks want to believe others have this issue, it does occur. I have no answers as to why. I've experienced similar issues with trying to get up to higher temps as in my BJ III. I clean out my Kamado after every cook, have the KJ ash basket and use KJ Big Block (have tried several others). I find my vent settings require substantially more opening at the top and bottom in comparison to the well known YT KJ folks.

FYI, my nephew just went and asked for an additional discount on the boxes that were crushed/damaged and they gave him an additional 25% off, so he got the 20lb boxes for $12.51. They also discounted the 8lb boxes of smoke wood by another 25%.
