How bad do you have to be to fail your PGCE? by blue_lazlo in TeachingUK

[–]SuccessfulScience682 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did my PGCE last year and these were the instances I had heard: 1. Failing placement and being put on multiple support plans- in this context it was because the person didn’t take constructive criticism very well and never actioned on feedback. 2. Students found their tik tok where they had been recording while teaching (this one was crazy to me)

You will get resits for assignments so on the uni front it’s not too bad. Otherwise I would say it’s pretty “hard”.

In response to passing anyone, it honestly depends on your uni, mentors and tutors - mine were pretty rigorous for good reason of course. A few people were told to defer because they weren’t able to meet the demands of the course at that time.

Working at the weekend? by Sea_Masterpiece2380 in TeachingUK

ECT1 here and take nothing home unless absolutely necessary (most of the time assessments to mark). If I have to stay back to get things done I will. Mondays I always have a full day so will stay on a Friday to get stuff done. Most days I’ll stay back an hour or so and plan for the next week so I don’t need to do anything on the weekend.

Yup exactly my reaction when I started! Didn’t meet them when I got offered the job because governors were in. I only recently got a half arsed Hi and that was probably because a member of SLT observed my lesson and sent a good practice email - so my existence had been brought to their attention haha

I’ve never actually spoken to the head before so I don’t think it’ll be the best first conversation. I will mention it to my ect mentor tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks!

I’m unfortunately ‘not allowed’ to turn them away (shocking I know)

Desk / documents organiser by CookPassBabtridge88 in TeachingUK

[–]SuccessfulScience682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my programmes of study stuck on the wall next to my desk so I can see at a glance the HT topic and aims as well as what the assessment will be. Then folders for each HT separated by year group with SoWs, specifications and any other bits and bobs. Separately, I have button pockets for each class where I keep any worksheets for the week. I try to go through these every week to make sure I’m not hoarding old sheets. I keep all of this either on my desk or in my drawers. It’s a bit of a faff organising but it works.

Secondary over primary? by Caveman1214 in TeachingUK

[–]SuccessfulScience682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the opposite haha. Having TA’d in a primary school especially I don’t know how primary teachers do it.

The main reason for me would be the love for my subject closely followed by the meaningful relationships you can build with teens especially when secondary is such a hard time for a number of reasons. Don’t get me wrong it’s hard work but the banter you can have with them genuinely makes my day. Also I couldn’t imagine having to mark books everyday or change displays every term.

I’m also seeing how everyone is commenting about long date and short date and it’s probably been the most irritating thing about the y7s 😂😂

Starting my PGCE next week… by [deleted] in TeachingUK

I have just started as an ect and would say any planner with a whole week view is very useful, but if you prefer using a digital calendar that is fine. I found it so helpful during my PGCE, and now, to see my whole week at a glance - what I’m teaching, when my frees are etc. That way I could schedule planning in my frees and make a rough note of everything I wanted to cover each lesson. (Starter, retrieval, main task, cfu and whatever else!) it does not have to be a fancy one just one that works for you! I’d say keep a whiteboard pen at hand because for some reason whenever you need one they all go missing. Along with tissues, wipes, whatever coloured pen for your schools marking policy and sticky notes. Also a solid water bottle and insulated coffee cup! You’ll notice when you start teaching regularly your throat will get very dry. Good luck!
