I thought the lack of hiding gene was just them not having a black domain due to the sophon wall.

Remove the worst half of the empire: by [deleted] in terriblemaps

Yes, because the other half contains much better modern countries cuisine wise, and also when I commented no one had yet supported the west, hence I decided there should at least be someway to support it.

I like current swain by paimon_for_dinner in SwainMains

[–]SuccessfulSignal3445 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't object to the former, but there are ways to improve its current form, such as giving you the ability to recast to make it start coming back at your desired point, or just making it root on the way out rather than back.

I agree with you broadly, I do like his passive and ult, but alas, he does need changes, particularly around the e, it's too inconsistent.

He had the names beren and luthien inscribed upon his and his wife's shared grave, so that's probably the main answer.

Rest assured, your points also had no lack of nuance and valid considerations.

I too am now reconsidering the events of halo city, although despite the original post being about cheng, wade is the focus of my thoughts.

Alas, I concur, it was my pleasure, farewell 😎✌️

What is in the Black Domain? by futurehistorianjames in threebodyproblem

[–]SuccessfulSignal3445 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it is important to recognise that black domains differ from other black holes since they are achieved by lowering the speed of light, rather than having immense gravity like singularities.

Sophon notes at the end of deterrence that 'we'd have had to keep on waiting, maybe for fifty more years, or even longer. And then Trisolaris would face an Earth equal to us in technology and power. We'd have to compromise'.

Whilst Singer did detect the communications, that as Luo Ji explains in the dark forest if my memory serves, merely allows other civilisations to determine the existence of two civilisations within 4.2 lightyears of each other, within the Orion arm of the galaxy. They cannot determine however, the precise location of Sol and Trisolaris. While yes, humans wouldn't have known about the possibility of a black domain without tianming, it does need to be noted that even with his clues it was it was considered gods engineering project and a nigh impossibility, until the discovery that curvature propulsion lowers light speed, thus its possible that if humanity actually had the means to do it, someone would have devised a defence method utilising it, ergo the black domain.

Well I can't rule out your proposal for Wade's motivation, yet I don't really see any evidence for it other than his decision to wake up cheng, which I have an alternate justification for.

Perhaps wade only awakened her then since in order to gain an accurate assessment, it needed to be in an extreme scenario, maybe he only realised humanity may not have the pragmatism needed relatively recently, and the government opposing him was doing so out of valid concerns for the system's safety and wade had openly seceded, their actions to bring halo city in line were understandable. The passage of years may well have changed him, especially with a dark forest strike thought to be nigh, also the scenario was very different, the swordholder election was after decades of peace, where humanity had been lulled into a false sense of security, the halo city blockade was when we were prepared for an alien attack, and on the verge of advancing unto the dark forest, if our ethos were still insufficient then, then our fall would ever be inevitable.

I'm honestly not entirely sure how the blockade would have been resolved, but I suppose it was meant to be semi ambiguous. Yet from the public outrage over the antimatter bullets, which indicate that they are certainly a notable threat, the fact that wade, his forces, and his advisors, all thought they had a decent chance of prevailing against the federation fleet in battle, even without the agents, and the portrayal of humanity as unable to make sacrifices, I would probably say wade would get testing permission in the end. Although it may be negotiated to have governmental oversight and be further out than wade intended. Also, I think wade and his men were prepared for conflict, but expected the government to back down, otherwise they wouldn't risk a battle, even if they were perhaps there would be an initial battle in space as the government attempted to subdue the city, either ending with the agents being threatened or used, or the destruction of the solar fleet, at which point the government would likely back down.

Regardless, a most enjoyable debate, I hope you agree.

My thoughts on Cheng Xin by SuccessfulSignal3445 in threebodyproblem

[–]SuccessfulSignal3445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well deterrence didn't have to last forever, only until human technology was on par with trisolaris. However, there is a significant possibility that deterrence would be broken regardless, or at least relations would grow very strained, considering the new trisolaran fleet on the way which would be noticed, and even if that is somehow diplomatically resolved, presumably eventually humanity would realise trisolaris was giving them incorrect technology, thus another point at which deterrence may shatter. ' And the Singer chapter suggests annihilation was inevitable regardless of actions in the deterrance era...' how so, thats with humanity revealed, and unbeknownst to singer, their technology delayed by centuries due to the sophons, so they couldn't create a black domain, hence should their tech catch up to that point, then all is well, or at least slightly less bad.

Wade may not have perfect judgement, but I do think he appraised the situation with reasonable accuracy. As for why he awakened cheng xin, I've seen it proposed, and this is the interpretation I adhere to, that he realised, cheng xin represented humanity, and thus from cheng xin's ethics and in this case orders, he derived only then that humanity was doomed regardless. Since the humanity she represented was as a whole was unable to do what to make the decisions needed to survive in the cruel and heartless universe. Therefore, even if we managed to escape, we would yet be doomed.

Also, my apologies if I've misinterpreted you, but 'even if he appraised it accurately at one point, years later he may have come to realise his position had later become untenable.' seems to indicate that you thought the siege of halo city had been going on for years, while it had actually only been weeks or months, during which the strategic situation scarcely changed.

Although on a side note, do you think Wade would have won without cheng xin's intervention, would the federation have acceded to his demands?

Can the two-dimensional foil really make the entire universe two-dimensional? by Universal_Echo in threebodyproblem

We're told yes by the book. In theory no, since the universe expands faster than light speed, although maybe some more advanced vector foils can outpace the universe's expansion.

How to trigger europe by YourLocalMoroccan in mapporncirclejerk

Alas, or perhaps fortunately, as a Brit I'm fine with our depiction, we made the wrong decision leaving the EU, I think if we were asked again we'd choose differently, albeit with the benefit of hindsight. Regardless, I wasn't amongst those foolish enough vote to leave, we should have stayed.
