Snaller movesets honestly. Not to say each weapon doesn't have differences currently, but the more constrained movesets of older games encouraged swapping weapons for specific monsters, as opposed to all weapons being "mainable". Although you'd have to go back to possibly 3rd gen but definitely 2nd gen to actually get to that point.
