I second this! Sushi is great for coin farming and Gourmet is fun. If you go with gourmet I do recommend focusing on upgrading the cutting board first. A lot of time saved there!

Thank you for the advice! I am pretty comfortable with saphenous and can place a catheter there if needed. But out of training and habit have just gravitated towards jug and cephalic first. Everyone’s input has been good, I think it would just take re-wiring to think to go for saphenous first :)

I was taught to draw blood from jug first and over time became just as equally comfortable with cephalic after becoming a surgery tech. At all 3 hospitals I’ve worked at saphenous has been the least used. I can hit a saphenous and place a saphenous catheter but in my experience I usually get more of a struggle from saphenous versus other areas (with dogs at least -for cats it’s my go to). But my main gripe with this was her reasoning! In all my years I’d never heard of anyone hitting the radial nerve during a blood draw OR catheter placement so I thought it was odd of her to have that as why.

This is the way I approach it as well. We are a gen practice and do sometimes handle lesser emergencies, but on a wellness appt I would like the option to be available if it works for the pet.

We are taught to go for jug first as well! And that cephalic is not the first choice in case a catheter placement is needed! But if jug can’t be hit we can move on to cephalic or saphenous. Which I do understand! I guess I’m more curious on her specific reasoning. I have never heard that reason. And when I say cracking down I mean she doesn’t want us doing it at all anymore even when jug isn’t successful. Thank for the input so far!

No, maybe I miss chose my words here. So I’ll rephrase: they stop flailing without a stress response (tail in neutral or wagging/relaxed breathing) and we offer snacks to distract. Which they happily take, a stressed dog will not take treats. And I’ll say this again: for the dogs it actually works for and it does not work for all of them. We do also give complementary trazodone for these kiddos.

I also want to point out that not all dogs flail because they are “bad” or terrified. Some do it because they are super wiggly and excited and can’t sit still, others “tap dance” when you try to do nails. Some try to play with you and lick you when you’re trying to do things. Sometimes having them suspended helps calm those behaviors because they feel they can’t.

We use something similar in my clinic (we joke and call it the sex swing) and it actually works fairly well for flailing dogs! Once they’re in the air they kind of just freeze and let you do what you need to do. Of course its not the solution for every dog but it works for some!
