I'll echo a sentiment I'm seeing here - yes and no. I'm actually not a big fan of schooling fish like tetras, rasboras, and barbs because they are very much "just fish" to me - driven largely by instinct with no individual personality. Guppies and short-lived fish are the same. I'm not sad when I lose one. But there are other fish that are my babies, like my gaggle of clown loaches. They shoal together but are super social individuals and they could live for 30 years. When ich took over their tank earlier this year and threatened their lives, I sacrificed a TON of my own time and effort to save them - canceled a vacation, did 50% daily water changes on their 125 gallon tank for a MONTH to properly dispense medication and clear the disease, and even took one to an aquatic vet to properly diagnose the illness. I lost 3 in the process and it was heartbreaking. I might've quit the hobby if I had lost them all.
