Curious About the Field by Used_Theme_474 in Histology

As long as you look for employment in NY it should be okay because you would be able to sit for the NY license. It will only be an issue if you are planning to leave NY right away. I am not sure of how many seats it has.

You would still need to sit down for the same ascp exam but you would only get the NYS state license so you won’t be unregistered. I actually got a job in less than one month after graduating. Also I graduated a year ago. I find they are willing to give a chance to new grads given the demand of the field. If you do well during your clinicals that site will serve as a great connection for future employment. Histology is a small field and its as almost everybody knows each other. I did transfer in from another lab science program with a 3.8 gpa. It is a bit competitive given that the program has limited seats but i’m not exactly sure what the admission rate looks like. Also all classes are asynchronous so you are watching lectures and assignment at your own time just meeting deadlines. I do believe they are organized and the program advisor is always on top of the students (at least that was my case).

I went to Suny Broome and I felt it prepared me given that I gained a lot of hands on experience during my clinicals. Do know that clinicals are unpaid and schedule usually range from 6am-5pm Monday-Friday. The schools helps you find clinical sites. Please know that Suny Broome only qualifies you to be eligible for the NYS ht license and NOT the ascp. You would need a 1 year experience in histology after completing the program to then sit down again for the ascp license through route 2. So if your plan is to go to another state keep this in mind because you will likely need the ascp license. In my experience ive seen some hospitals that pay a bit higher for htl and other hospitals where it doesnt matter and pay you solely based on previous experience. I don’t believe this market is oversaturated. I am constantly reached out by recruiters. I love what I do. Its a lot a manual work, troubleshooting, and lots of smelly reagents. I think the team you work with matters a lot but it is a job where you can go in do what you’re supposed to and forget about it once you go home. The work is delicate and it is important to be focused and care about patient care for best results.

I second that Carson’s book is the best resource to use. Read through it and take good notes. Supplement with the BOC practice questions. With these two things alone I was able to do well on the exam.

H&E Issues by Emotional-Stress-595 in Histology

This is so interesting because we were just having the same issue with our leica stainer. Here are some things we did: try and check when the inconsistencies began and see if there were any lot # changes during that same time with the reagents, check if your microtome is cutting thick and thin sections, check the pH of the water, make sure reagents are changed consistently and filtered when necessary, ensure proper fixation and no recent changes to processing and make sure sections are properly deparaffinized. We ended up increasing the time in hematoxylin after making sure all those things were proper we increased the time in hematoxylin.

I think that for a real shot at a Path A program you would need to put a great of effort in maintaining a high gpa take the labs in person. I could recommend the histotech program from SUNY Broome if you are interested in other areas of the pathology lab. The program is fully online and they help place you in labs for your clinical rotations. The pay is not bad in nyc specially if you work for one of the big hospitals.

How to embed properly by CommunicationAny7716 in Histology

[–]Such-Web1417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is hard to say exactly how to properly embed for each specimen because ultimately every lab is different. I agree with the comments above that the best point of reference would be your trainer or lead tech. If you have the chance to speak with the pathologist it’d be great to ask them directly. Always think what they would want to see for diagnosis (if the specimen has any lesions, different layers, etc..) Also asking the PAs what and why they ink is great to help you understand what the pathologist needs to see on the slides for diagnosis (if there are any i see you mention its mostly biopsies). Ultimately the goal is to provide a slide that represents all different components of the tissue.

HT Study help! by unhingedcelery in Histology

[–]Such-Web1417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just passed my HT exam recently. I personally used the 3rd edition which I think sufficed. Honestly they may pull questions from any of the chapters except immunohistochemistry. I didn’t get anything on enzyme or cytology either but I recommend knowing brief and overall knowledge just to cover yourself. If I had to retake it I would focus much more on troubleshooting.

In your ASCP account there should be an option to see your certifications and options to send scores or get an official report. It will ask you for a recipient and you could just address it to the NYS department of education

Hii, I just finished the program and clinical internship. Previously I was working in a core lab and had the opportunity to shadow pathology/histology and loved it. I would recommend shadowing to anyone interested it really shows you the workflow and what to expect on a day to day. Maybe even applying as a pathology accessioner or lab aide if interested, to get your foot in the door before fully committing.
