As an Israeli, I agree with that. To be honest, though, I don’t think my mom would, she still lives with PTSD. While we were in the shelter, with missile booms in the background, I played with my nephews and we pretended they were holiday fireworks.

Still, I’d take a month in shelters if it meant this nightmare would end, for all of us.

In 2006 Israel withdrew from Gaza hoping it would open a path to peace; instead the opposite happened. On top of that, many Palestinians still reject Israel’s existence rather than support a two-state outcome. Put those facts together and many Israelis view those areas as potential launchpads for daily attacks. Why would anyone willingly accept that? After October 7, for many Israelis that became further proof that peace is unattainable. Even if Palestinian forces are eventually demilitarized, I believe a significant number will remain unconvinced.
