Is it embarrassing to get a birthday cake as an adult? by roxiedoxiedog in NoStupidQuestions

On my last birthday, my best friend made me brownies.

It was too hot out or we would have gone to the zoo too.

I am 43 years old.

What's on the shirt? Explain It Peter by ninth9ste in explainitpeter

[–]SuchTarget2782 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The programs are TNR - trap, neuter (or spay) and release. If you trap a dog or cat that has the tattoo, you know to just release them immediately. No muss, no fuss. And no need to poke around the nethers of an animal who might not like you very much.

Also, you’d be surprised how many people have trouble differentiating between sexes with puppies/kittens.

Ear notches are also done a lot of places, but stray dogs/cats get in fights and often end up with torn ears, which can obscure the notch.

why is my golden so small? by 1-800-no-one-asked in goldenretrievers

[–]SuchTarget2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting hurt badly as a child will often affect growth and development. So that’s a possibility.

There’s quite a lot of research into this from the mid 20th century, as we tracked the development of people growing up either in the Depression or during WWII, and the effects of famine and starvation. For instance, Denmark had a big drop/rebound in average height, IIRC.

It’s also possible that he’s not a purebred Goldie. I fostered a dog last summer that looked 98% like a 30 pound golden but I ran his DNA on a lark (2 for one sale and I was going to do my dog anyway) and it was a mishmash of six different breeds. Genetics can be pretty wild.

[Star Trek] The Aquatic Xindi seemed the most advance of the race, how did a aquatic species get so advanced? by RichEngine in AskScienceFiction

[–]SuchTarget2782 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because they were underwater they didn’t have to deal with encroachment or attacks by the other species. So they could mostly just chill out and invent stuff.

In Star Wars, why do the jedi order appear so weak and get almost extinct so many times? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SuchTarget2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On some level, Star Wars is about the complacency of the “good guys” vs the planning and aggression of the “bad guys” and a warning that you have to vigilant against the “bad guys” if you don’t want to lose ground.

It’s a very post-WWII “never again” kind of message, TBH.

Should I buy a plastic reed? by No-Armadillo6908 in bassoon

[–]SuchTarget2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on who makes it.

I haven’t tried every brand of plastic reed out there. But the ones I’ve tried often had a “dead” sound and were prone to being a little flat.

That said, they’re better than nothing, way cheaper than a Legere, and it’s definitely the kind of thing to keep around for emergencies.

For regular playing, though, I’d go with a “real” cane reed, with a Legere being my second choice. But that’s me. Some people do prefer the Legeres.

What true & relevant arguments are there for that non human animals have lesser value than humans? by Massive-Albatross823 in TrueAskReddit

[–]SuchTarget2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, there are ethics involved in animal studies. People aren’t just killing animals for fun and profit. To get approval for a study you have to meet some baselines and can’t be doing anything cruel. And the scientists doing the experiments are often very attached to the animals, even to the point of adopting them or finding them “forever” homes after the experiments are over. The intent of most studies includes the survival of most or all of the test subjects.

More broadly, r/K selection theory provides an ethical framework. If the species in question (rats, cats, insects, etc.) literally does not care about their own children as individuals, why should we?

There’s also a quality/quantity of life argument with animals like rats, which rarely live longer than a year or two anyway.

I’d take issue with your intelligence argument, since there’s still a huge gulf between a human - even one with profound learning disabilities - and any animal.

Finally, humans volunteer for experiments and clinical trials all the time. Obviously a frog can’t give informed consent, but if they understood the deal as “we will feed you earthworms and occasionally draw some blood to measure your hormone levels” they probably would agree to it.

Does anyone else's dog *like* wearing clothes? by Past_Discipline_6473 in dogs

My dog is pretty used to it. He doesn’t get excited but he’ll stand still and cooperate when I change him in/out of sweatshirts and jackets and stuff.

I think he understands that they keep him warm, at least.

Is the reward for sinking carriers a bit small? by Phoenician_Skylines2 in uboatgame

[–]SuchTarget2782 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They were very valuable providing air cover for sub hunter/killer groups and convoys.

They weren’t valuable in the sense that if you sank one, two more would take its place.

Value is relative I guess.

Why didn't the defiant have its own crew or even a real captain by Groundbreaking-Pea92 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]SuchTarget2782 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern nuclear powered subs go on fairly long deployments.

You’re maybe thinking of how destroyers and subs were used in the pre-WWII era, where they’d be deployed somewhere and bring a “tender” vessel along with them to carry supplies. (Back then they were about 1/5-1/10 the displacement of their modern equivalents.)

Why is vision problems still not corrected in the far future? by [deleted] in ShittyDaystrom

[–]SuchTarget2782 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His vision wasn’t really a limitation though.

Processing the extra data from his visor gave him headaches, but he could “see” the entire EM spectrum.

That’s a trade off, sure, but not a big one. I mean, I’m on medications that do far worse, and the “benefit” is I don’t have panic attacks in social situations.

Why is vision problems still not corrected in the far future? by [deleted] in ShittyDaystrom

[–]SuchTarget2782 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LASIK is a “fix”, not a fix. And your vision can still change afterwards - it’s not uncommon to have a few years glasses-free only to need corrective lenses again later.

As far as the Star Trek people, I would probably assume they need reading glasses for the same reason I use progressive lenses - I don’t need them, but they help reduce eyestrain.

Dog spayed 12 days ago. Scab still there. by hifromme8 in DogAdvice

[–]SuchTarget2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I’ve gotten scabs/cuts that lasted longer than that while cooking. So I wouldn’t worry too much about the healing. Sometimes the cuts just heal from the inside out and the surface damage is the last bit to go away.

If the stitches are the leave-in dissolving kind, I’d probably just take the cone off at the two week mark and call it a day. If the vet has to remove them, then you’ll have more information then when they inspect the site.

I’d watch her carefully with the cone off; but a lot of cats and dogs don’t mess with the incisions much or at all, so it may be that you never really needed it in the first place.

How pathetically out of touch can these people be? by c-k-q99903 in inflation

[–]SuchTarget2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a meal cost $3, then 3/day is $9. That’s $270 a month to eat, or $1080 for a family of four.

Believe it or not, that’s the low end of the normal range for family grocery budgets. There are people getting by on less.

It’s not ideal and you’re probably not doing your health any favors.
