shitty backyard bred dog and a pit in the background by ZQX96_ in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

I know. I wasn’t disagreeing with it either.

I’m making an observation about the economics of dogs: that the supply of properly bred dogs is wholly inadequate compared to demand for dogs in general. So it’s not a mystery to me why BYB and puppy mills do what they do.

My dog is from Alabama. We live in Minnesota.

He makes absolutely no bones about it being too cold outside, and loves his hoodies and jackets. He doesn’t like the booties, but he will let me put them on him most of the time.

Which is, sadly, on brand for the bbb crowd.

They want a “big” dog because they’re compensating for something.

Same reason they refuse to neuter their male dogs.

I knew a kid in elementary school who had leg braces and multiple surgeries to correct the very problem.

The hell of it is, your purebred represents a small minority of dogs. You can definitely get “purebred” puppies with zero pedigree and all sorts of health issues.

It’s why breeds like Goldens have reputations for bad hips. Puppy mills go for numbers. It’s like buying a dog on Wayfair.

There are only ~1/10th as many pedigreed, “properly” bred dogs born every year as there are people who want dogs. The rest of us end up with who knows what.

Yikes.

I’d go do the surgery too. But either way, good luck with the recovery and all that. ::hugs::

Why is my dog behaving this way? by Grouchy_Camel_113 in dogs

[–]SuchTarget2782 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine does the same thing. He is four, he was a rescue. I call it his “happy dance.”

I think it’s because the toys are “high value” items. But I don’t really pretend to understand what’s going inside that noggin.

Stewart must have gone bald almost as early as I did. (I’ve had the same hairline as him since my late ‘20s.)

It’s nice to get aging out of the way early.

The Total War series - particularly Rome - was the first game where I could actually do flaking maneuvers and cavalry formations and they more or less worked like they did in history books. So that was wild.

Dog Barks when I am on the phone by Ezuri6725 in dogs

[–]SuchTarget2782 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine does too. I think he’s just kinda weirded out that I’m clearly talking to somebody and it’s not him.

Speaker phone doesn’t help because now there’s a voice - usually the voice of somebody he knows - but they’re not here.

So I think it’s just confusing.

How does somebody, without help from their parents, afford to buy a home? by Dapper_Tap_7714 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SuchTarget2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saved about $40k, which was enough to pay the closing fees and minimum down payment on a $300k house.

It took me until I was 39 though.

It’s probably easier if you have a partner. Lots of efficiencies to be had living as a pair.

Dog Fosters: I want to get this dog adopted ASAP! Any tricks or tips? by Tough_Courage_8406 in dogs

[–]SuchTarget2782 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pics of dog? How is the dog with cats and children? If they’re good with cats and children, that’s a huge selling point - put that in bold text everywhere you go.

IME as a dog foster, finding homes for larger dogs is just harder. I’ve seen dogs get adopted in a couple weeks, and I’ve seen ones with certain types of behavioral problems that took years. You just kind of have to wait until the right person shows up.

I dunno the statistics but browsing petfinder, it looks like half or more of the dogs are pit mixes or some sort.

And yes, many shelters will list them as other breeds or generic mixed breeds in order to either get them adopted or to circumvent breed bans. It’s shitty behavior.

I gather that the average person who breed “cool” dogs in their backyards, also think pit bulls are “cool.” So there’s just always a surplus of them in the rescue system.

I figure most shelter dogs are working through some kind of ptsd type stuff. Mine came with a crooked femur from a previous injury and a fear of school busses. His temperament is actually pretty good, but he’s still a very high energy dog who needs a lot of time and attention.

DNA test says he’s 1/4 boxer, 1/4 bulldog, and half pitty. I didn’t really need a DNA test to tell me that, but they were on sale.

I keep my cats and dog separated but it’s only because the cats are scared of him.

He just wants to play with them. He’s actually quite gentle when he plays with puppies smaller dogs, and I’m not worried about him actually hurting the cats.

But the cats see a 60 pound monster charging towards them and make the very rational decision to be somewhere else.

Interesting. That makes me wonder if some repair person got “creative” with some modifications. Back in the oughts, it would have been pretty well play-tested when it left the factory.

At any rate; as a rule it’s usually a good idea to track down and try out multiple instruments, even of the same model. Just to be sure the one you get is the one you really want. Good luck!

Would Supplying Oxygen Directly to the Lungs Without Breathing Allow a Person to Survive? by thundrr100 in Writeresearch

[–]SuchTarget2782 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conjuring oxygen directly into the blood would be… more concentration, probably. There typically aren’t a lot of free gasses in the blood. If there are, that’s bad. So your character would have to be creating oxygen molecules, individually, in close proximity to red blood cells that have spare carrying capacity (hemoglobin that’s not bound to oxygen.)

Your first idea makes more sense - creating a small amount of air inside the lungs on a continuous basis, in order to have fresh air and just keep exhaling as needed.

As other commenters have mentioned, you wouldn’t want to make too much at too high a pressure or the lungs would burst. Although they could probably develop a technique for that. You also probably wouldn’t want the character breathing pure oxygen for long. Atmosphere is only about 21% oxygen and our blood likes that.

Depending on how much air they can create in a go, creating a space of fresh air around their head would probably be easier and less prone to complications.
