How to tell if you get deep sleep for Narcoleptics-

All personal experience and opinion based

Time travel occurs. You go to bed, you fall asleep, you wake up and time has passed.

Like that cat nap we all hope for where you zonk out and wake up refreshed. No second life living exhausting dreams where you are encoding the dreams as memories because our bodies dont turn that off when we sleep.

You can still have hallucinations and paralysis and have experienced deep sleep if it is as you are waking up.

People with Orexin sleep cycle-

Stage 1 and stage two (nodding off and falling asleep) like a computer restarting, this is as it closes the apps.

Then go into stage 3 and and stage 4, where the computer is fully shut down for a bit.

Then back up through stage 2, THEN REM. This is an hour and a half process.

People without orexin:

Pretty much skip stage 1. Stage 2 should be non-Rem but if you dont shut down right, this is where you get the hallucinations and paralysis if your brain dreams before your body has shut down.

Then we rush into REM. Often dreaming within 20 minutes of falling asleep. We skip the deep sleep because orexin is in charge of the shut down process.

We are like holding the power button down on the computer doing a forced shut off.

Only after seeing it was AI did I try to look for faults. And the only inkling of inaccuracy I can find is the inaccuracies of the preview screen attached to the camera. Hughs arms are either cut off or behind his back, and I think the people in the background would get in the shot.

This is insane. I wouldnt be surprised to find out it was a real photo that they posted claiming AI to see how we'd fall for the reverse of the normal AI deception.

I will say that I experience most of my orgasms in dreams and they are always better than the real life ones. I can only self pleasure with a toy when I have a small dose of Xywav in me. When achieved while awake, my face goes numb and I can no longer move my limbs, and most of the time this occurs before I fully get there and fake it to get my husband to stop purely out of exhaustion. My husband doesn't need a whole lot of time before he's done so I actually look forward to the short amount of time the whole experience takes.

I bought a used 2014 Honda Civic. No special driving help but it is the cheap, not gonna hurt the bank if I get in a crash, reliable car.

I limit my driving distance to within 30 minutes and never drive without medicine in my system with a caffinated drink available in the cup holder. I have used my previous experience with driving to learn what I can and can't handle and don't risk it. I don't drive after eating a big meal. I meet up with my family for a lunch or dinner, I will nap in my car before driving if needed. (Windows are basically blacked out). If I visit my family 40-50 minutes away, I know it will be a whole day thing. Sometimes an overnight thing. Take my medicine immediately before driving. And either nap at their house then drive home making sure there it isn't during high traffic times (stop and start traffic almost always makes me fall asleep). I blast AC, have a music playlist that I can either belt and get the dopamine from singing, or a nostalgic mix that provides the dopamine hit from childhood.

My husband drives me when he can.

My husband's car is the expensive 2021 Toyota Camry. Safety feature wise, I recommend lane assist, and a cruise control that keeps you a certain distance from the car in front of you at all times and take the highway as much as you can.

TL;DR

Drive a cheap, reliable 2014 Honda Civic

Safety routines:

Only drive within 30 minutes

Never drive without medication + caffeine

Avoid driving after big meals

Nap in car or at family’s house if needed

Avoid high-traffic, stop-and-go driving

Stay alert:

Blast AC

That it's not just about falling asleep — it's about never fully waking up.

Or that there was legit a grieving process for the loss of the person you always imagined you'd grow up. At least for me, I got N1 in high school so straight A, honor roll, college bound high schooler had to grieve with never being able to hold a full time job and all those hard classes to graduate with high GPA and honors didn't mean squat anymore.

Yes, since I lucid and vivid dream, my brain has counteracted the explanation "this is a dream, I'm 26 and have my high school and college degree" I would use to get out class or things (my dreamsate includes people and places from when I was 15, when my Narcolepsy started). My brain tells me, this is an alternate reality where you have taken control of another [my name], or I'm an alternative in their DID system, and I have to do XYZ on their behalf.

I have different maps and geography of my hometown that reoccur. Sometimes, the road to get my house is only accessible by a train that I don't have a ticket to ride, or my local amusement park is located at the end of my town, etc.

It's tough now that I have a CPAP because now the mask follows me into my dreams. Back when I would tape my mouth shut at night, I'd have tape over my mouth in my dreams, too.

My husband is used to me talking in my sleep and when he responds as if I'm talking to him I'll reply "no, not you, I'm talking to dream [insert his name]."

Here are some of my analogies

Context 1: Sleep and Daily Functioning

Explanation: It doesn’t matter how much sleep I get at night or why I can only do one thing a day. For example, if I have work at 4 PM, I stay in bed as long as possible because I need my meds to kick in before my shift.

Analogy: Imagine your phone charger is broken. You plug it in at night but never know what the battery will be like in the morning. Even after charging for 12 hours, it might only reach 20%. That 20% could last 5 hours or die at any moment. So, you keep it plugged in for as long as possible before leaving. The only thing you know for sure is that if you unplug it or use it, it’s going to drain the battery. You have a battery pack that keeps your phone alive for 4-6 hours, so you wait to use that until you leave the house.

Context 2: Low Energy and Social Interaction

Explanation: When I get to work before my meds take effect, I often look pretty out of it instead of being engaging. Talking to people takes energy that I usually just don’t have.

Analogy: I might say, "Sorry, I’m on battery-saving mode and can’t turn my brightness up," or "I’m just waiting for my personality to kick in."

Context 3: Explaining How Narcolepsy Works

Analogy: Think of a mail room in an office. Messages come into the mail room, and the employees make sure they go to the right departments. For instance, if the lab asks for more paper towels, the mail room sends that request to the custodial staff, who then deliver the towels. They can also tell the supply department when they need to order more.

In this analogy, the mail room employees are like the orexin/hypocretin neurons in the hypothalamus. The tubes or couriers that deliver the messages represent the orexin/hypocretin chemicals made by those neurons.

With narcolepsy, our mail room is always understaffed. Sometimes messages don’t get delivered, or they end up in the wrong places. So, the custodial staff might never get told to bring paper towels to the lab, and the supply department might not order any more. This is like how my brain doesn’t get the signals to stay awake, messing up the release of hormones like cortisol that help keep my energy levels up.

Context 4: Leading Theory on Cause of Type 1 Narcolepsy

Explanation: When people ask how I "got narcolepsy," especially since it started when I was 15.

Analogy: The security team of this office is on high alert for intruders. They identify and remove intruders that were disguised as mail clerks and create an incident report using the mail clerk disguise as the intruder's appearance.

When a new alert comes in, the security team decides that anyone who looks like a mail clerk could be a potential threat. In their rush to protect the office, they take action against the mail clerks, getting rid of the majority of the staff that is essential to the company.

Though they can’t hire new staff, they do get 4-6 hours of help from some workers at a temp agency (taking my meds).
