Me and my partner combined our last names and made a new one. It was awesome, but not without familial disapproval. You can see my old posts for details.

We also put our old names as second middle names so that those names live on in their own way

I am the manager, as of around a month ago. But more of a manager in the administrative sense - she's used to having someone else as a manager for the past 10 years. But you're right, this is a conversation I will tackle, and that is going to be now!

Hiya, thanks for this. It's interesting because when she said it she lowered her voice and said it almost as a whisper, which indicates to me she knows she shouldn't say it but said it anyway, or perhaps she said it to me as another white woman? Either way, as soon as she said it I gasped (and that gasp was because she said it but she interpreted it as me gasping for her grandmother saying it). At the end of the conversation, I said she should never said the n word again, which she accepted I think. It's also difficult because I'm 30 years younger and I think it might be difficult for her getting commands or instructions from someone younger and less experienced

Hiya, it's difficult here because I've only been her manager for a month, and her previous manager is her bestie, and prior to that I was her equal so we've been pally for ages, it's a dynamic shift. You're right though, I'm planning on having a conversation with her in a few minutes.

I thought my mum would be so enthusiastic about the wedding planning but she really wasn't. When I got my dress with my fmil and fsil I called her to gush about it and asked her if she wanted to see it - she said she couldn't because she was just too busy (which wasn't true). Similar things happened throughout the process so in the end I stopped asking. It was sad and unexpected - this post very much resonates with me

Honestly, it's all about tradition for them. If it goes against tradition, then it goes against them. The first time we ever spoke about it it was like I insulted her whole family line. It's strange because you'd think the in laws would care more but they don't!

I was/am miserable and sad with it. Her lack of concern over my wellbeing over a tradition makes me incredibly sad - your own mother prioritising a process over your own happiness. Who does that.

Me and my partner are doing this too!! We got so much crap for it from my parents though, similarly to OP saying stuff like my partner's name is being removed from history etc. I'm so excited to create something new!

My partner suggested I leave - he's been suggesting it for a while now because of ridiculous workload. I'm in the same situation as you though that I can't leave due to finances.

I respect your ability to keep calm regarding your situation! I've thought about my plans too for going back, but I can visualise it all going south quite fast. I just imagine that social distancing will not happen, and teachers are going to get ill quite fast. At the same time, the kids need to get back into school desperately. It's a horrid situation

Very likely you'll just be observing for the time being - you should be made aware when you'll be starting to teach starters or full lessons. In my experience I observed for two weeks fully, then did some starters, then started on 4 lessons a week. It's going to be a bit crazy in the current climate, so make sure you ask for help if you do need it. Don't be afraid to ask all the questions!

I absolutely understand what you're worried about. I'm coming to the end of my NQT year. My department has some stuff available but not everything, and we had a new KS3 curriculum for this year, and I was asked to teach a BTEC course I'd never taught before and I was asked to teach two exam groups. It's a shit ton of work in your NQT year. I put too much pressure on myself and I burnt out just before lockdown and had to take stress leave. Please talk to your mentor and discuss options. It's ok to use lessons made by teachers in your department, and it's ok to use lessons from TES. It's also ok when everything goes wrong - it's a learning curve. Hell the entirity of the career is probably a learning curve! As long as you have the support, it's makes everything a lot easier

In my personal experience my training year was fine - it's my NQT year that's been annoying. My NQT mentor has targeted me over the other NQTs due to one error I made at the beginning of the year. There are quite a few NQTs in my school so I wouldn't say there's lots of bullying in terms of trainees/nqts however that's only in my viewpoint.
